On Monday, former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson announced his move to the Bellator promotion.

The move was not terribly surprising; Henderson was always clear about his intention to explore free agency after his UFC contract expired.

“I’m beyond excited for this next phase of my career,” Henderson said on his personal website, where he broke the news. “It’s a big move, like any move when switching employers or jobs after having worked somewhere for such a long time.”

A big move indeed, with implications in and out of the cage. Now that we’ve had a day to digest the news, a round table of Bleacher Report MMA writers convened to discuss.

Steven Rondina

This news both is and isn’t surprising.

For the most part, the UFC has done a good job of locking down fighters who still have something left to offer the company. Sure, Phil Davis joining Bellator made waves, but it’s important to remember that title-relevant guys such as Chad Mendes and Gilbert Melendez both toyed with free agency, only to re-up with the UFC.

Henderson, unlike every other person to wave goodbye to Dana White, left the promotion as a top-10 name (in the B/R MMA rankings, at least) coming off back-to-back wins with a clear path to the UFC title. That’s something we haven’t seen since Dan Henderson left the UFC for Strikeforce back in 2009.

On the other hand, we’ve seen a major shift in terms of how fighters view the UFC. At one point, the promotion had a firm grasp on the sport’s throat, but over the past 12 months, we’ve seen fighters young and old pass on UFC contract offers. Perhaps more importantly, we’ve seen names like Jose Aldo, Miesha Tate and Frankie Edgar publicly vent their frustration with the company. It was only a matter of time before somebody up and left the UFC, and Henderson might just be the first of many to do so.

With that in mind, I turn to you two. What are your thoughts and feelings on this news?

Nathan McCarter

The move was expected. That about sums up my feelings toward Henderson’s signing.

What does it mean? I don’t think it means much at all. Will more fighters test the market? Sure, but Henderson’s exit doesn’t mean the UFC is starting to lose ground or that Bellator is starting to gain it. All it means is that Henderson isn’t that valuable to the UFC.

We already saw this happen with Phil Davis. Henderson isn’t the first.

Henderson would have bolstered UFC undercards and headlined Fight Nights on TV, but he was never a pay-per-view draw and was never going to touch that headlining spot again. The lightweight division is too deep, and welterweight is too good at the top end. He would have been a top-five gatekeeper.

The UFC won’t be hurt by this, and both Bendo and Bellator benefit. Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t feel as if this is anything significant in what it means for MMA and free agency. But perhaps that’s because Henderson just doesn’t move the needle.

Scott Harris

There are two branches to this: the “political” side of it, if you will, and the side that has to do with actual MMA.

Let’s take the second one first. Henderson isn’t a title contender right now, and even when he was, he wasn’t the most exciting or lovable competitor. He’s a world-class athlete with a nicely blended skill set, but clinching and leg kicks and takedown defense, repeated ad nauseam like square-dance steps, are not going to win legions of fans.

Still, this is probably the best fighter to make this particular leap, and he’ll jump right into Bellator‘s best division. Matchups with champ Will Brooks, Michael Chandler and even phenom Michael Page loom as possibilities. Henderson won’t do this in a vacuum, and that’s a good thing for him and for viewers. No one knows how this will look, but it has a lot of potential.

At the same, let us be what the teens call real. If the defection wasn’t so rife with symbolism, if it wasn’t the latest and greatest broadside against the suddenly and increasingly less-monolithic-seeming UFC, this would be a lot less exciting. One imagines the transitions and its larger implications have a lot to do with Henderson’s newfound (if potentially fleeting) status as a fan favorite and world-beating fighter.

The difference between these two branches is that Henderson’s prospects for competitive success in Bellator are promising but uncertain, whereas the meaning of Bellator and Henderson’s new partnership is crystal-clear. No, Henderson isn’t Jon Jones, but he’s a heck of a lot more compelling than Cheick Kongo.

This is what change looks like. One small step for MMA, a giant leap for fighter-kind.

While Benson Henderson announced on Monday that he is Bellator-bound, UFC President Dana White — surprisingly enough — has nothing but kind words for the former UFC Lightweight Champion. Well, sort of.

White spoke with the folks at MMAJunkie.com about Benson Henderson’s decision not to re-sign with the UFC, opting instead to accept an offer from rival MMA promotion Bellator. According to White, “Smooth” Henderson turned down an offer that would have paid him “substantially more” than he was making previously, but only if he were to become UFC Champion again.

“The truth is we made him an offer that would have paid him substantially more – like not even in the same ballpark – than he’s getting now if he were to become world champion again,” White said. “But he chose [Bellator’s] deal, which offered more up front.”

The UFC boss continued, revealing his belief that despite being 2-0 in his last two fights since making the move up to the 170-pound welterweight division, Henderson is on his way down the rankings, not the other way around.

“He’s a former world champion who’s ranked number 15 now,” said White. “We’re looking for top five guys, guys that are going from 15 to one, not the other way around.”

Benson Henderson (23-5, 11-3 UFC) last fought at UFC Fight Night 79 in November of 2015, defeating Jorge Masvidal by way of split decision in a five round main event.

Earlier today (February 1, 2016), former UFC lightweight champion “Smooth” Benson Henderson announced that he would be taking his talents over to Scott Coker run Bellator MMA.

Riding a two fight win streak, Henderson fought out his contract with the UFC, ending it off with a split decision win over Jorge Masvidal last November.

After the fight with Masvidal, it was very clear that “Smooth” was a free agent, and with the Reebok sponsorship deal limiting UFC fighters, many had expected him to jump ship and he did just that.

Henderson was quick to thank the UFC, and President Dana White even commented on the news soon after it was announced.

White, speaking with MMAJunkie, claimed that the UFC had actually offered a substantially larger deal than Bellator, but that Bellator had offered Bendo more money up front.

The UFC president also seemed to take a shot at the former champion, seemingly implying that he has declined over time:

“The truth is we made him an offer that would have paid him substantially more – like not even in the same ballpark – than he’s getting now if he were to become world champion again, but he chose their deal, which offered more up front,” White said. “He’s a former world champion who’s ranked No. 15 now. We’re looking for top-5 guys, guys that are going from 15 to 1, not the other way around.”

At the end of the day, White admitted that he was happy for Henderson, wishing him all the best:

“But I’m honestly happy for Benson. I’m not angry. Who knows? This could be the last contract he ever signs. He got the right deal for him. He’s a great guy, and we wish him all the best.”

Did Henderson make the right decision in joining Bellator?

Following his decision win over Jorge Masvidal in the main event of last November’s UFC Fight Night 79, former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson declared that he would be testing the free agent waters with his contract now fulfilled.

It was a statement that more and more fighters seem to be making in this new and not-so-lucrative Reebok sponsorship era, but many of the fighters simply see what they’re worth on the open market and then find out if the UFC will match them or not. Some end up staying, and others, like former UFC light heavyweight contender Phil Davis, actually do leave for a better deal in another promotion.

And today (Mon., February 1, 2015), news has arrived from Henderson that he has joined Davis in Bellator, releasing a statement via his website:

I’d like to officially announce my move over to Bellator MMA.
I’m beyond excited for this next phase of my career, it’s a big move, like any move when switching employers or jobs after having worked somewhere for such a long time.

I have to thank the BigMan upstairs for putting some amazing people in my life, my wife (first and foremost) and a lot of truly smart and insightful people behind the scenes who helped make the connections and negotiated this deal to bring it to fruition.

I’d be remiss to not thank Dana White and Lorenzo Fertita for the opportunities they presented me, you guys have helped me change my life for the better and to be able to provide my family with the things I didn’t have while growing up. For that I’ll always have the utmost appreciation. Thanks for all the advise you guys gave too, both business wise and personal.

And last but not least, to who it is I think of when I think of the UFC! Everybody behind the scenes who I personally dealt with every time I reported in or had to do something. Mayra, Melissa, Dave, Chris, Nick, Tracy, Joanie, Maura, Tony, Heidi, Ryan, James, Dave, Kaia (sp.???), Burt, Rob, Rudy, Stitch, House, Mike, Susie, Dean, Donna, Feryal, Sean, Joe, Brad, Jazzmine, Candice, Michelle, Reed, sorry I can’t name everyone or this list would go on for forever. There’s a whole ton of people behind the scenes who make that show what it is. You guys and girls are the ones who make that show great and allow us fighters to do what it is we love!!! Much love to you all and thanks for putting up with me for so long.

To my fans, thanks for all the love and support, I’ll keep giving you my all, opening up my heart and soul inside that cage. I’m excited for this next chapter and building new relationships with guys I’ve heard nothing but great things about like Scott Coker, Rich Chou and Mike Kogan.

UFC officials confirmed that they had declined its matching rights on Henderson’s offer, making his move official. With the announcement, Henderson will now reportedly move back to lightweight after winning his last two UFC bouts at welterweight, and it appears that he’s already found his first potential opponent.

The MMA free-agency game has officially changed with the announcement that former UFC and WEC lightweight champion Benson Henderson is joining Bellator MMA. Henderson officially broke the news on his personal website Monday morning.

“I’d like to officially announce my move over to Bellator MMA,” he said in a statement. “I’m beyond excited for this next phase of my career, it’s a big move, like any move when switching employers or jobs after having worked somewhere for such a long time.”

While Bellator has scooped up other UFC fighters in the past, most notably light heavyweight contender Phil Davis and former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson, Henderson is the first elite-level, championship-caliber talent to leave the UFC behind.

He is currently riding a two-fight winning streak at 170 pounds, with victories over Brandon Thatch and Jorge Masvidal. Not only that, but his recent losses to Donald Cerrone and Rafael dos Anjos both generated controversy.

Bellator is currently in need of new blood at both 155 and 170 pounds, and Henderson could easily challenge Will Brooks or Andrey Koreshkov for either divisions’ title. Past the divisional champions, there are numerous other interesting opponents for “Smooth” in Bellator including Michael Chandler, Douglas Lima, Marcin Held and Paul Daley.

Despite the move, Henderson remained grateful to the UFC. “I’d be remiss to not thank Dana White and Lorenzo Fertita (sic) for the opportunities they presented me,” he said. “You guys have helped me change my life for the better and to be able to provide my family with the things I didn’t have while growing up.”

Unfortunately, there are no details yet on Henderson’s Bellator debut. Keep an eye on Bleacher Report for more updates as they come.

Former UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson took to his official website blog to announce that he has signed with Bellator MMA.

“Smooth” Benson Henderson purposely allowed his UFC contract to expire after his last Octagon appearance, as he was looking to see what his value was on the open market.

The Viacom-backed MMA promotion that airs regularly on Spike TV, and in 2015, entered the pay-per-view market, apparently won the Benson Henderson sweepstakes, as the former UFC champion wrote the following blog regarding his Bellator MMA signing.
