MMA Fighters vs Boxers: Who Makes More Money?

UFC popularity has soared over the last ten years, helped by deals with TV broadcasters like ESPN. The increase in viewership has leveraged somewhat of a rivalry between boxing and MMA fans, although many like to tune into both types of fighting events. That rivalry came toe to toe when Mayweather faced MMA star McGregor in 2018, in what was known as a billion-dollar fight. Interestingly, Mayweather has teased of a rematch. The money involved was astronomical, and it makes us question, which type of professional fighter earns the most?

First, Where Does the Money Come From?

Both sports are incredibly wealthy, with money coming from an array of different avenues. For these fighters to get paid big money, the people who arrange the fights need to accumulate even more wealth. After all, fighting is a business and the companies at the top want big profits just as much as the athletes.

There is, of course, TV rights which make up a significant percentage of fighting revenue. Big fights are usually held in well-known locations such as Las Vegas and broadcast to millions around the world who have to pay a one-off fee to view the contest. This means there are also tickets to be sold with those closest to the action paying thousands of dollars to watch the blood and sweat up close.

The other primary form of revenues come from promoting products and sponsorship, and in fighting sports, the latter usually comes from sports brands or gambling companies. There is a natural connection between gambling and sports as most fans like to bet on fights – and get a second bout of adrenaline through betting on the games before the first blow lands.

So, Who Makes More Money?

The facts and figures from both sources suggest that boxers make significantly more money than UFC fighters. Even if you look beyond the outliers at the top of each sport, such as people like Mayweather and McGregor, further down the order boxers still take home bigger salaries. An MMA fighter like Cormier earned less than $2 million in a year, whereas an equivalent level boxer like Golovkin earned around 12 times that amount in a year. Although it is important to remember that the UFC is relatively new compared to boxing.

But Do Most Fighters Really Make Big Money?

The flashy lifestyles, fast cars and own alcohol brands may look like reality from the outside, but for the masses of professional fighters, this is never the case. Business Insider has reported that only 19 out of every 21,000 fighters will make big money from their sport. This means the odds are not in any fighter’s favour to become rich from fighting. The report goes on to say that most fighters in the UK will make post-tax profits less than £20,000. This means fighting for many people means earning less than the average income of any professional industry.

Of course, some fighters will fight in million – or billion – dollar fights in USA’s Nevada desert playground. Yet, it is rare that any fighter will make it to the big time.

Super lightweight boxer Hugo Santillan has tragically become the second boxer to pass away this week after injuries suffered in a fight.

The 23-year-old Argentinian fought to a draw against Eduardo Javier Abreu this past Saturday. However, as the decision was being read, Santillan was struggling to stand upright and had to be helped by his trainers.

He later collapsed before finally receiving medical attention and oxygen before being transported to the hospital. He underwent surgery for a brain clot that night.

However, Santillan suffered two cardiorespiratory arrests following the surgery and never left the coma.

He becomes the second boxer to pass away this week following the death of junior welterweight Maxim Dadashev. Dadashev suffered brain injuries during an 11th-round KO defeat to Subriel Matias on Friday.

Before his corner stopped the fight, his trainer was pleading with him to end the fight because he was absorbing too much damage. Following the fight, the 28-year-old collapsed on his way to the back and underwent emergency brain surgery. However, he would pass away on Tuesday.

Artem Lobov won’t be shaking Paulie Malignaggi’s hand after their bare-knuckle boxing fight tomorrow night (Sat. June 22, 2019).

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Lobov noted he won’t be shaking Malignaggi’s hand when it’s all said and done tomorrow night, but he’ll shake his brain:

“I won’t be shaking his hand, but I might shake his brain,” Lobov said.

Lobov was then asked about if he has spoken to his good friend and training partner Conor McGregor before the fight. The beef between Lobov and Malignaggi began due to Malignaggi’s past issues with the McGregor camp. Malignaggi was a former sparring partner for McGregor ahead of his 2017 boxing match with Floyd Mayweather.

However, after McGregor released a clip of what looked like him knocking Malignaggi down, which Malignaggi claims was a trip, “The Magic Man” left holding a bitter grudge:

“Yeah, absolutely we spoke about the fight,” Lobov said. “Before every fight we always exchange strategies, we always help the other guy out into planning the strategy and how we’re going to approach this fight. But in terms of this fight, we have everything broken down at the time of the sparring happened.

“We already knew what we’re dealing with. There’s nothing to be amazed by, there’s nothing special about him. This guy has no power. Fragile little hands, plucked out eyebrows, he’s hiding his f*cking bald patch.”

Given McGregor has sparred with Malignaggi already, Lobov was asked if McGregor had any advice for him before he takes the former boxing world champion on in bare-knuckle competition:

“Yeah, absolutely, like I said, we broke down the whole sparring,” Lobov said. “So I know his weakness and I know his strengths. I was getting ready for the best version of Paulie even though I knew only a fat mass was going to show up.”

BKFC 6 goes down from the Florida State Fairgrounds Expo Hall in Tampa, Florida. It kicks off at 9 p.m. ET on pay-per-view (PPV). You can view the event on FITE TV for $39.99.
