Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who won gold in the women’s 66kg category at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has announced her intention to turn professional. This decision comes after a controversial summer where her gender was questioned, leading to intense controversy.

Imane Khelif Controversy

Khelif’s journey to Olympic gold was marked by controversy when she was disqualified from the 2023 World Championships after failing gender eligibility tests conducted by the International Boxing Association (IBA). However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed her to compete in Paris as the IBA is not considered a reputable organization.

The legitimacy of these tests has since been questioned as the IBA refused to share the results or even what the test was. As Chael Sonnen explained:

The claim that the boxer submitted a genetic test that came back with an XY chromosome—indicating that she is biologically male—is simply not true. The IBA, which initiated this whole controversy, never said such a test was done. They only mentioned that they found something, which was then appealed

Alleging that this Algerian boxer had a test showing she had the XY chromosome, which would indicate biological maleness. But this is simply not true. The test never happened. The IBA never claimed such a test was done.

Algeria’s Imane Khelif was born a woman and competes as a woman. This person is not trans. This person has never failed a gender test, nor has the IBA ever explained what they were testing for. The story was false. Her vocal critics largely have apologized.

Despite facing significant backlash and criticism, including an incident where Italian boxer Angela Carini walked out of their match, which she later apologized for, Khelif persisted and won Algeria’s first-ever gold medal in women’s boxing. The controversy extended beyond the ring, with Khelif filing a lawsuit against high-profile figures like Elon Musk and J.K. Rowling for alleged cyberbullying.

In a recent press conference, Khelif revealed her plans to enter professional boxing, stating that she has received multiple offers but hasn’t decided where she will make her professional debut. She expressed her desire to showcase Algerian talent at the professional level. Additionally, Khelif mentioned that a documentary about her success story is in preparation and will be shown on international platforms.

Imane Khelif’s Olympic success and the publicity surrounding her case have made her one of the most well-known female boxers globally, which could potentially benefit her professional career. However, she may continue to face scrutiny and debate as Imane Khelif transitions to the professional ranks.

Francis Ngannou

After capturing the heavyweight title in the PFL, Francis Ngannou is uncertain whether he will have his next match boxing or MMA. But ideally, the Cameroonian-born athlete will return to action sometime in 2025.

Francis Ngannou Next Fight

The 38-year-old Francis Ngannou had tremendous success competing in MMA with the UFC. He was feared for his punching power and was able to capture the UFC heavyweight world title by way of knockout. After successfully defending this championship he walked away from the organization.

Once he left the UFC, Francis Ngannou had massive payday offers for him in boxing and with the PFL. He had two blockbuster boxing matches facing champions Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. In the PFL, competing in MMA, he was able to stop the top-ranked knockout striker Renan Ferreira, who was a PFL champion.

After defeating Renan Ferreira by first-round knockout, Francis Ngannou has two options ahead of him: compete in MMA with the PFL or have a boxing match. Speaking in an interview with Ariel Helwani, he explained:

“It could be either one (MMA or boxing). I don’t know yet. I don’t have any hand in that one. I don’t have a decision. I think it also depends on promotion. I don’t know. If next, PFL, they come up with something with a fight or a date, maybe we’ll work on it. If it’s boxing, same thing.” [Ht MyMMANews]

Either way, ‘The Predator’ Ngannou is set to make millions of dollars. In MMA, with the PFL, he is getting paid over $10 million per fight plus bonuses. His two boxing matches earned him a combined $30 million. Additionally, he is able to help build up the sport as the leader of PFL Africa, and he has peace of mind because in MMA he has guaranteed his opponent a massive payday giving them at least $2 million for fighting him in the PFL.

After a highly anticipated and closely contested battle, Artur Beterbiev can now call himself the one and only king of boxing’s light heavyweight division.

Beterbiev defeated Dmitry Bivol to become the undisputed light heavyweight champion in the main event of a card held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The 39-year-old retained the IBF, WBO, and WBC titles in this contest, in addition to capturing the WBA (Super) title held by Bivol.

With the win, Beterbiev has become the first undisputed light heavyweight champion since Roy Jones Jr. accomplished the feat in 2000 — and the first in the four-belt era.

Beterbiev and Bivol battered one another, with the two bringing war for the full 12 rounds that the fight lasted.

The latter got off to a strong start over the first couple of rounds before Beterbiev picked up the pace in the third frame and turned up the pressure more in the fourth. Beterbiev continued to land power shots in the fifth round, but Bivol defended well and responded with strong combinations in the sixth.

Both men appeared to do damage in the seventh round, with Bivol rocking Beterbiev early before Beterbiev pressured him before the round’s end. After a quieter eighth stanza, Bivol worked his counterpunching and defense well over the next two rounds. Beterbiev then brought back the pressure in the 11th before a close, competitive final round.

Beterbiev Captures Undisputed Light Heavyweight Title With Close, Controversial Decision Over Bivol

One judge scored the fight a draw 114-114. However, he was overruled by the other two judges with scores of 115-113 and 116-112 in Beterbiev’s favor.

This was the first time that Beterbiev did not score a KO or TKO in his professional career.

The Russian captured the IBF light heavyweight title with a KO of Enrico Kolling in November 2017. He won the WBC title by defeating Oleksandr Gvozdyk in October 2019 and the WBO title with a win over Joe Smith Jr. in June 2022.

Bivol, meanwhile, won the WBA (Regular) light heavyweight title with a first-round knockout of Trent Boradhurst in November 2017. He was elevated to WBA (Super) champion in October 2019.

Jake Paul recently issued an audacious $5 million challenge to Mike Tyson ahead of their highly anticipated boxing clash.

“The Problem Child” is preparing to face off against Tyson in an eight-round heavyweight contest set for November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Originally scheduled for July 20, the fight was postponed after “Iron Mike” experienced an ulcer flare-up in May.

Ever since the fight was announced earlier this year, the matchup has been met with widespread skepticism, largely due to the substantial 31-year age gap between Paul and Tyson. Despite the doubts, the boxing icon has repeatedly assured fans that he’s in top form and more than ready to step back into the ring.

The former undisputed heavyweight champion hung up his gloves after facing Kevin McBride in June 2005. However, Tyson returned to the squared circle in November 2022 for an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr., which concluded in a draw.

Meanwhile, Paul is riding high on the momentum of a sixth-round knockout victory over Mike Perry in July. Currently on a four-fight winning streak, he has only tasted defeat once, falling to Tommy Fury via split decision in February 2023. “The Problem Child” has made a name for himself by toppling former MMA stars, including Nate Diaz, Anderson Silva, and Tyron Woodley.

With just a month remaining until their matchup, Paul has thrown out an intriguing proposition for “Iron Mike” that could earn him an extra hefty payday.

Paul Offers $5M If Tyson Lasts Beyond Round 4

In a TikTok video earlier this week, Paul raised the stakes for his upcoming bout with Tyson, offering a lucrative $5 million bonus if the boxing legend can withstand his barrage past the fourth round. However, the YouTuber-turned-boxer added a playful twist—should ‘Iron Mike’ fail, he’ll have to get a tattoo that reads, “I Love Jake Paul.”

“Mikey Mikey, if you can last more than four rounds with me, I’ll give you an extra $5 million,” Paul said in the video. “But if you don’t, then you have to get a tattoo that says, ‘I Love Jake Paul.’”

Paul’s tattoo challenge isn’t exactly a new tactic. After his victory over Woodley in August 2021, the former UFC welterweight champion demanded an immediate rematch. “The Problem Child” agreed, but only on one condition: if he triumphed again, Woodley would have to get an “I Love Jake Paul” tattoo.

True to his word, after Paul knocked him out, “The Chosen One” followed through and inked the tattoo on the inside of his middle finger.
