The biggest question on everyone’s mind is what’s next for UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor following his TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather in his professional boxing debut.

UFC President Dana White has gone on record by stating that McGregor will be back to defend his lightweight championship before the end of the year. One problem with that is the fact of a possible boxing match with Paulie Malignaggi or the lucrative trilogy fight with Nate Diaz. To add onto all of that, there’s also the possibility that McGregor never laces up the gloves again.

To say that McGregor’s future in combat sports is up in the air is an understatement. Going into the boxing bout, there was speculation that McGregor might never return to MMA due to the money that he would receive. Now that the Pay-Per-View numbers are currently trending towards the highest of all time, it’s entirely possible McGregor could choose to retire on the back of this huge payday.

Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub appeared on a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience Fight Companion podcast, and during the podcast, Schaub suggested that post-Mayweather fight, McGregor is far too big a star to return to the UFC on the same contract he was before being one-half of the biggest fight of all time.

“Conor has changed the game for the better, especially if you’re the fighter,” said Schaub (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “With WME, he’s steering the ship. Think about it, he made over – the numbers have come out, and they’re saying it’s gonna be the biggest Pay-Per-View of all time – so he made $100 million, right? So you’re telling me if you’re Conor and you’re part of his team you’re gonna go, ‘Hey, fight Nate Diaz for $5-10 million and also, we need you to wear this Reebok, and they’re gonna pay you $100,000 a year.’ You think Conor’s gonna [do that]? You’re crazy.

“You’re playing a different game now. You’re talking about the biggest athlete in combat sports. You’re not getting him for the $200,000 you were paying him a year. He can go, ‘Listen, I’m down to wear Reebok, but it’s a different animal now.’”

A trilogy fight with Diaz is currently the frontrunner for McGregor’s next fight. The belief is that the bout could sell north of 2 million buys with the bump McGregor gets from his bout with Mayweather. However, Schaub believes McGregor vs. Paulie Malignaggi is the fight to be made.

“Conor’s changing the dynamics for everyone because now when you want him to fight again, you can’t have him agree to those old terms. He’s a smart guy, and he learned anything from Floyd, you know when you fight Floyd you’re fighting a different animal. . .

“That contract doesn’t matter if it’s out or not. The game has changed. There’s no way you keep going with that current contract. If I’m Conor and I have McGregor promotions . . . I’m just gonna go to Dublin, and me and Paulie are gonna sell this 70,000 stadium out, and I’m just gonna take all of it.”

The biggest fight of the century is in the books. By now, everyone knows that Floyd Mayweather Jr. beat UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor by 10th round TKO on Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada at the T-Mobile Arena.

There was almost another fight that took place backstage at the event between former UFC heavyweight and current analyst Brendan Schaub and UFC lightweight star Nate Diaz.

The two men made headlines over the weekend after a video of the incident surfaced online. They argued about how well McGregor did with Diaz saying that McGregor only won the rounds that Mayweather wasn’t trying in.

This led to Schaub, who was someone representing the MMA side of this fight while hyping it as part of the Showtime broadcast team, trying to calm down the situation. However, Diaz wanted no part of that and fired off an “f*** you” to Schaub while shooting him the bird as Schaub walks away.

Schaub appeared on Monday’s edition of the Joe Rogan Experience (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting) where he addressed his backstage altercation with Diaz.

“Let me just clear it up now. So many people have been blowing me up. So I’m with Terence Crawford, Amir Khan, [Andre] Berto, and I’m in the back, and they’re saying how good Conor did and I’m like, good, great, I thought he was gonna do even better. Showtime wanted me to go do this post-fight show thing so I’m going and I see Nate Diaz, and he’s by himself on his phone. I see him, and I think, same fraternity, UFC guys. . . I just figured, we’re brothers in arms here.

“So I see him, and I’m like, ‘Yo Nate, bro, how about that fight, man? You’re next. Biggest fight in UFC history brother.’ And he starts laughing. He’s like, ‘Aw hell no. How f***ing stupid do you look now? How stupid do you look, talking all this s***?’

“And I’m like, ‘Woah, what are you doing right now? What the hell are you doing right now?’ And he keeps talking, so I go, ‘Nate, he doesn’t look that stupid. He won rounds against the best boxer of all time.’

“Then Nate’s like, ‘He didn’t win rounds. He gave him one round.’ Alright, man. Either way. He won rounds though. What are you doing?’ And he keeps talking s***. Then he starts talking about my career, and I’m like, what is going on right now? I went, ‘Nate, I have no issues with you. You’re pointing your gun at the wrong guy. What are you doing right now? You should be selling this fight against Conor, not me. I’m not the guy. I’m in skinny jeans and Gucci boots for God’s sakes. What are you doing right now?’”

“This is the part I left out, this is what triggered him. I was talking, and I literally couldn’t hear him, and I was like, ‘Nate, use your words. I can’t understand a word you’re saying. Use. Your. Words.’ And he has that lisp or whatever, so that probably set him off. But I have no issues with Nate.”

Last night’s (Sat., August 26, 2017) massive Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., obviously elicited a wide range emotion from the collective combat sporting world.

Mayweather won the bout by tenth round TKO (watch highlights here), but not before McGregor impressed with his unorthodox abilities in the ring, as he actually won at least one early round and as many as four overall (depending on who you ask) before gassing and succumbing to the vast experience of the undefeated “Money.”

The fact that McGregor found any semblance of success has more boxing-focused onlookers speculating that Mayweather has indeed lost a step despite his win over McGregor, however, and apparently, UFC lightweight Nate Diaz is among them. A video surfaced on Twitter of Diaz arguing that Mayweather “wasn’t even trying” with SHOWTIME Sports analyst and retired UFC fighter Brendan Schaub, which ended with Diaz flipping Schaub off and stating, “Well, I’m just saying you’re a bitch.”
