Ulysses Gomez Collapses While Cutting Weight; Cage Warriors 62 Main Event Scrapped

The physical stress that fighters endure during weight cuts can inflict more long-lasting damage than anything they do inside the cage. MMA’s most recent death was reportedly due to weight-cut-related complications, and just last month Brian Melancon retired because of worsening kidney problems.

MMA’s latest weight-cutting cautionary tale comes to us courtesy of flyweight Ulysses Gomez, who collapsed while cutting weight for his Cage Warriors 62 headlining fight against Neil Seery and was hospitalized. Even though Gomez wanted to move forward with Saturday’s fight anyway, Cage Warriors made the only sane decision and scrapped it. If you’ll recall, Gomez vs. Seery was one of the non-UFC fights we were most looking forward to this weekend, so this sucks on multiple levels.

Once considered one of the greatest 125-pounders in the world, Gomez couldn’t find success on the sport’s largest stage, going 0-2 in the UFC. He was released by the promotion February, and was subsequently denied the chance to try out for TUF 18. The Cage Warriors 62 main event was supposed to be Gomez’s return to competition. Unfortunately, his layoff will continue until he gets his next fight booked.

Fight of the Day: Paul Daley Puts on a Thai Plum Clinic Against Jimmy Pocket Lukasz Chlewicki at Cage Warriors 57

Remember when we told you that Paul Daley was scheduled to slaughter some poor Polack at Cage Warriors 57 last weekend? Well, as luck would have it, he all but slaughtered some poor Polack at Cage Warriors 57 last weekend. Crazy, right?

To his credit, +800 underdog Lukasz Chlewicki didn’t seem too afraid to stand and bang with “Semtex,” which when you look at Daley’s highlight reel, is akin to sticking your foot in a bear trap and hoping to win the Boston Marathon. Unfortunately, Chlewicki’s persistent clinch work would turn out to be the cause of his demise, as the visibly larger Daley would use the opportunities to put on a Muay Thai clinic. Punishing elbows and vicious knees befell Chlewicki until a Marvin Eastman-esque goat vagina was opened up on the right side of his shiny, bald head, forcing the ringside physician to call the fight between the first and second round.

Chin up, Lukasz. You might have had your ass kicked by one of the best ass-kickers outside of the UFC, but let’s look at the positives:

1) You ended the fight in the same state of matter as you began it in.

2) You were able to chew solid foods the next day.

3) You were fighting in a cage.

Press Release – London, England (June 11, 2013) – Five years on from his last appearance for the promotion, Paul Daley will return to Cage Warriors Fighting Championship next month.

The 30-year-old Englishman will face Polish star Lukasz Chlewicki in the main event at Cage Warriors 57 at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Saturday, July 20.

Ranked as the UK’s top welterweight, Daley (32-12-2) last fought for Cage Warriors back in July 2008 when he stopped Bojan Kosednar by first-round KO.

Daley went on to fight three times for the UFC, before challenging Nick Diaz for the Strikeforce welterweight title in April 2011.

Born in London but now based in Nottingham, Daley has 23 T/KO victories on his record and has overcome the likes of John Alessio, Duane Ludwig and Martin Kampmann during his 10-year professional career.

“I’m excited to be fighting back in the UK again and back at Cage Warriors, which is Europe’s premier show,” said Daley.

“I pretty much started my career here and it’s great to see how the promotion has grown. I’m happy to be part of it and I can’t wait to entertain all my supporters.”

Daley will face a tough test from Chlewicki (10-2), whose only loss in his last 11 bouts came at the hands of UFC star Demian Maia back in December 2005.

After taking a five-year hiatus from the sport, the 34-year-old judo black belt returned in 2010 and has remained unbeaten since.

Chlewicki said: “Taking on one of the best guys in the world, this is the kind of fight I’ve been waiting for. This will be a massive challenge for me, especially in front of his fans, but that won’t affect me at all and I’ll be prepared.

“I want to thank Cage Warriors for giving me this opportunity. On July 20 I’ll prove that they made a good choice.”

Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan added: “I’m looking forward to a fantastic main event in Liverpool on July 20 and I’d like to thank Bellator for their co-operation in allowing Paul Daley to compete for Cage Warriors.”

Many more Cage Warriors 57 fights are still to be announced so keep track of Cage Warriors on Facebook and Twitter.

Ronnie MannPress Release – London, England (June 6, 2013) – Cage Warriors Fighting Championship is pleased to confirm that it has signed top English bantamweight Ronnie Mann.

The five-fight deal will see the 26-year-old compete exclusively for Cage Warriors over a minimum of 18 months, after CWFC paid a fee of $5,000 to Bellator to have Mann released from his contract with the promotion.

Cage Warriors 57 at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on July 20 has been pencilled in for Mann’s CWFC debut, with the Cheltenham native keen to make his mark on Europe’s most competitive bantamweight division.

“I’m extremely happy to have signed with Cage Warriors,” said Mann. “It’s very flattering that they were willing to buy my contract from Bellator.

“Graham Boylan and all the guys at CWFC are great, and I’m very thankful for what they’ve done. In my opinion it’s the best promotion in Europe and I’m happy to be a part of it.”

Currently ranked fourth in the UK, Mann accumulated a 3-3 record in Bellator after debuting for the promotion in April 2011. In his 28 professional bouts, Mann has been stopped just twice.

He added: “Bellator are a good promotion but I needed to be active again because I wasn’t fighting as regularly as I would have liked.

“I’m looking forward to having regular fights again, especially on the UK scene and in front the great fans we have here. I want to get my name out there again in Europe and hopefully work my way to a title shot. But for me, it’s one step at a time.”

Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan said: “I’d like to thank Bellator for their co-operation in this deal. I don’t like to see fighters not active in the prime of their careers and Bellator understood that, at his age, Ronnie needed to be busy.

“Like all of our fighters, Ronnie will have plenty of opportunities here at Cage Warriors. Our bantamweight division is extremely strong and Ronnie has got the ability to make a big impact.”
