Legendary boxer Canelo Alvarez isn’t putting too much stock into a potential fight with Conor McGregor in the future.
Alvarez is set to face Caleb Plant in his latest test in the boxing ring this weekend and is still in the prime of his career at 31 years old. McGregor is currently recovering from a nasty leg injury he suffered against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 earlier this year.
But McGregor has hinted at returning to boxing at some point and was close to fighting Manny Pacquiao at one point. Despite McGregor’s striking prowess, Alvarez doesn’t think that he would have much to worry about in a potential fight with McGregor in the ring
Canelo Alvarez doesn’t feel that Conor McGregor would be much of a threat in the boxing ring
McGregor last boxed against Floyd Mayweather, a former opponent of Alvarez’s in 2017. He would lose via TKO despite appearing to land some powerful blows early in the fight.
Alvarez is widely regarded as arguably the best boxer to walk the earth right now, alongside Tyson Fury. Alvarez has accumulated an astonishing record of 56, with his lone loss to Mayweather earlier in his career.
McGregor is at a bit of a crossroads in his combat sports career. He’s previously stated intentions to return to the UFC sometime next year, but a potential money fight with Alvarez could also be on the table.
Alvarez has also been the target of UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, who called him out during UFC 268 media day in New York. It sounds like Alvarez could be well on his way to facing a UFC star for one of his next fights in the boxing ring.
How do you think a Canelo Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor boxing match would play out?
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez seems to have no interest in a potential crossover fight with Kamaru Usman. In July, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ talked up his chances in a boxing match with the pound-for-pound best, he said. “I think I can do anything that I put my mind to. I don’t disrespect Canelo.
I think Canelo is one of the best, one of the greatest of this generation and I do not disrespect him at all. I respect his skills and I think he’s a phenomenal champion. But I also know whatever I put I mind to, I go out there and I get it. So if it’s in the cards in the future, maybe we’ll dance, we’ll see.”
Kamaru Usman Recently Doubled Down On His Canelo Callout
“To be honest with you, I’ll tell you what will really get the people going, Usman said. When have you ever seen two pound-for-pound fighters in the world in their respective sports go at it? Who’s the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world right now? It’s not about money, it’s about what gets me out of bed, what gets me scared! I want the chance. I want (to fight Canelo)”.
Canelo will attempt to become the first Mexican undisputed boxing champion in history when he takes on Caleb Plant this weekend. The 31-year-old currently holds the WBO, WBC and WBA titles at super-middleweight and will get his chance to claim the IBF belt this Saturday.
Ahead of his career-defining fight with Plant, Canelo was asked about squaring off against the pound-for-pound best fighter in MMA.
“Payday,” Canelo replied to a chorus of laughs from assembled media.
Do you agree with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez? Is Kamaru Usman simply chasing a payday by calling him out?
Kamaru Usman has come out and explained that his callout of boxing champion Canelo Alvarez is “not about the money, it’s what gets me scared””. Usman is scheduled to rematch Colby Covington for the welterweight title this weekend at UFC 268. Since debuting in the UFC in 2015, Usman has had a perfect 14-0 record. […]

Usman is scheduled to rematch Colby Covington for the welterweight title this weekend at UFC 268. Since debuting in the UFC in 2015, Usman has had a perfect 14-0 record. Another title win would all but secure his status as one of the best fighters in the history of the promotion. However, even with being at the top of a stacked division like welterweight, Usman has been eyeing big fights in other combat sports.
Earlier this week Usman called out boxing world champion Canelo Alvarez. Both have huge title fights this weekend that they have to get past. If both survive this weekend, the buzz and talk around this match up will only grow. Alvarez has not yet commented on the Usman callout but, one has to think his ears will perk up after this weekend. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ sat down with ESPN this week and explained his thinking behind his surprising callout. UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman has pitched a crossover fight against boxing’s pound-for-pound best Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez. In his own sport, Usman reached the P4P mountaintop following a rankings update last month. “The Nigerian Nightmare” displaced previous #1 Jon Jones, who hasn’t competed since early 2020, and was arrested and charged with battery domestic violence […]
In a recent interview with The Schmo, Usman gave his thoughts on his latest #1 ranking. When asked why the change took so long, the 170-pound king suggested he’s always felt like the P4P best.
“You tell me. I don’t know. I’ve felt like that, I’ve always performed like that, I’ve always trained like that. You know, I guess it’s better late than never for everyone to realize that.”
Usman was last in action at UFC 261 in April this year. In what was his second clash with Jorge Masvidal in under a year, “The Nigerian Nightmare” recorded his fourth successful title defense in brutal fashion. He became the first man to knock “Gamebred” out in the UFC.
Kamaru Usman Entertains The Idea Of Historic Superfight
Having now fought off the challenges of Masvidal, Gilbert Burns, and Colby Covington, Usman’s dominance at the top of the welterweight division looks set to continue. If he can defeat “Chaos” in their rematch at UFC 268 on November 6, rematches with Leon Edwards and Burns seem likely, with Vicente Luque standing as the only top contender coming off a win that Usman is yet to face.
With “Rocky” seemingly content with waiting for his title shot, and Masvidal and Burns firing callouts on social media, the champ believes he may have to turn to Boxing’s best if no contender sets themselves apart from the rest. Usman, who’s previously suggested he has what it takes to defeat Canelo, pitched a P4P crossover showdown with the Mexican sensation during his interaction with The Schmo.
“I might have to go drag Canelo out… you know, when he’s done with all these guys that he’s running through… It’s never been done, I might have to drag him, if not in the Octagon, I might have to drag him in the ring and actually take him. Because pound-for-pound, it’s never been done. Pound-for-pound [best] MMA fighter and pound-for-pound [best] boxer. So, that might be next if these guys can’t prove that they’re the next number one contender.”
Like Usman, Canelo currently has his hands full preparing for a November 6 fight. While his MMA P4P counterpart gets set to face Covington, the WBA (Super), WBC, Ring magazine, and WBO Super Middleweight Champion will meet Caleb Plant inside the squared circle next month.
Should both men continue their dominant reigns in their respective sports, perhaps another blockbuster crossover feud will be born.
