Not too many people are particularly fond of Chael Sonnen.

The former UFC title challenger has a quick silver tongue, which has since severed any ties with Brazilians after several disparaging remarks against the country and it’s people. Vitor Belfort is no different.

In his last outing, the former UFC light heavyweight champion successfully bounced back from a middleweight title loss to his former teammate Anderson Silva, with a first-round blitz of PRIDE veteran Yoshihiro Akiyama, knocking out the Japanese Judoka in less than two-minutes.

The victory was impressive to say the least, but now Belfort is making the case for himself to once again challenge his fellow countryman for the promotion’s 185-pound title.

“I think I’m one of the most interesting guys to challenge Anderson Silva, there’s no doubt about that”, said the Xtreme Couture product in an interview with Spencer Lazara of MMA Interviews.

“He knows in his mind that I’m a threat for him. He knows I can knock him out.”

Sonnen is most remembered for his incredible five-round drubbing of the aforementioned Silva, who managed to snatch a late rally triangle choke in the fifth and final stanza.

The match earned both men “Fight of the Night” honors at UFC 117 in August of last year. Sonnen was originally expected to rematch the Brazilian straight away, though a subsequent suspension handed down by the California State Athletic Commission—due to elevated levels of testosterone—and personal issues left him out of action until recently.

Now the outspoken middleweight will be taking on Brian Stann come this October, in what is likely to be a No. 1 contender’s match, which is something that “The Phenom” clearly takes opposition to.

“But if they want to give (the title shot) to Chael Sonnen—Chael Sonnen has his moment and I think he’s the only guy that deserves to fight Anderson Silva at the moment. But besides him, I think I deserve a rematch. Chael Sonnen is a very boring fighter. He doesn’t knock people out, but he can wrestle you and if you don’t know the jiu-jitsu game, you’ll be in trouble with him.”

Belfort may have chosen the wrong enemy. Setting your sights on Sonnen, in a war of words at that, can be likened to putting six bullets in a six barrel chambered gun, playing Russian Roulette—you won’t like your odds.

Vitor Belfort Calls out Chael Sonnen, Says He Will "Pound (Sonnen) Out"

While he might be out of action momentarily, Vitor Belfort has made his intentions clear to his next opponent when he does return.

Belfort suffered a minor injury, which resulted in him withdrawing from UFC 139 against Cung Le. The UFC immediately found a replacement in Wanderlei Silva, who Belfort said was a good choice, and that he hopes Silva can regain some momentum and earn a victory in his upcoming bout.

“I think it’s a great fight for Wanderlei to come back,” Belfort told TATAME.com.

“He won two of his last eight fights, right? So, I think it can put him back, give him a motivation to stay fighting.”

The minor injury Belfort suffered was a recurring injury that almost forced him to back out of his last fight against Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 133. After receiving doctor’s orders to refrain from doing any contact, the Brazilian decided to pull out of the bout, in order to be fully recovered for his next outing inside the Octagon.

And “The Phenom” has one opponent in mind: Chael Sonnen.

“I think it’s the perfect timing, he’s a good opponent and it’s a fight that everybody wants to see,” he said.

Sonnen has become notorious lately for calling out Brazilian fighters and making disrespectful remarks towards the culture and impact they have on mixed martial arts. His comments have offended fighters like Anderson Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Wanderlei Silva, and Belfort said he would like nothing more than to make an example of him.

“I’d pound him out,” he said. “Let’s hope he wins this fight and the UFC puts him against me. That’s the fight everybody wants to see.”

Once an athlete retires, they tend to spend the rest of their lives playing golf and what not. However, most of these athletes possess skills and attributes that could be put to good use.

Chael Sonnen is one of those athletes who is exceptionally skilled in things other than fighting. Love him or hate him, nobody can deny that he is a great speaker and an intelligent person. Therefore, it’d be a shame if he was to retire from MMA and live the rest of his life away in a lush pad in Oregon. He has skills that should be utilized. For example, Sonnen has a skill-set that would be great for somebody who is required to speak a lot for their career.

I did not include any silly career suggestions for Chael Sonnen (in case he decides he is going to hunt me down). That is for you, the readers, to come up with. Leave your suggestions in the comments below!

This article is just a bit of fun and a discussion point for fans to let others know their opinions about Chael Sonnen.

UFC: Michael Bisping Calls Out Chael Sonnen

UFC middleweight and one of the most recent head coaches on The Ultimate Fighter, Michael Bisping spoke with Ariel Helwani recently on his show The MMA Hour.

As to be expected, Bisping spoke about his thoughts on the current title picture at 185 pounds.

“The Count” lived up to his reputation of being one of the most outspoken fighters in the game today, and The Fifth Round provided a transcription of some of the highlights.

When speaking about the most relevant middleweight bout coming up, Chael Sonnen versus Brian Stann at UFC 136 in a title eliminator, Bisping was not very supportive of either Sonnen or Stann being that close to a title shot.

“You can’t believe a word that comes out of Chael Sonnen’s mouth. The guy lives on another planet to you and me,” Bisping said.

Bisping, who was once sympathetic towards Sonnen’s problems outside of the cage, summed up the fellow middleweights recent struggles in a few words.

The Count conveniently left out the element of compassion this time around.

“I think it’s complete bull****.  You got Chael Sonnen, who just fought the champ, cheated, took steroids and got submitted.”

Harsh words from Bisping, but after Sonnen ripped his British counterpart after being awarded a coaching spot on TUF, it seems safe to say all professional courtesy went out the window.

Despite being on a three-fight win streak since dropping to middleweight, Bisping also could not find a reason to endorse “The All-American” Brian Stann being in the title picture.

“Brian Stann, his biggest win is against a guy I beat three years ago and wiped the floor with,” Bisping proclaimed.

For those unaware, the common opponent Bisping speaks of is Chris Leben.

However, it’s worth noting that Bisping won a unanimous decision, while Stann earned a rare knockout win over “The Crippler.”

Bisping is also on a three-fight win streak, but he still believes that he is a bigger threat in the division than Brian Stann.

“Brian Stann, you know, the guy he’s doing well. He’s making some noise. He’s putting together a good win streak, but I’ve been around longer. I’ve beaten more guys and I think I deserve my chance,” Bisping explained.

At a different portion of the interview, Bisping did admit that despite the bad blood, he still would have preferred to coach TUF opposite Chael Sonnen, since a win over Sonnen could very well grant Bisping a title shot.

A win over Jason “Mayhem” Miller would likely not move Bisping very far up in the division, and the former TUF winner acknowledged that.

“Does a win over Jason Miller earn me a title shot? I don’t think so,” Bisping stated.  “I don’t think Miller necessarily is the big name that’s gonna do it,” adding that consistently winning big fights and beating good guys should have him in the title picture anyway.

Bisping did not have anything bad to say about reigning middleweight champion Anderson Silva, but he certainly had no problem ripping his most recent opponent, Yushin Okami.

“Anderson Silva’s proven time and time again that he’s the best in the world, and I’d agree with that. But I think I’d do a much better job than what Yushin Okami did,” Bisping said.

“To be honest, I think my 8-year-old son would do a much better job than what Yushin Okami did.”

Okami was TKO’ed in the second round of his title fight with Silva at UFC 134, looking tentative and showcasing basically no offense before the ref stoppage.

Mayhem Miller and Bisping will headline the season 14 finale of The Ultimate Fighter on December 3 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort Las Vegas, Nevada.
