Gilbert Burns and Ali Abdelaziz seem to have put on a friendly wager for a potential Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev bout.

Abdelaziz took to Twitter to note he heard a recent interview in which Burns said he believes that Oliveira would beat his client, Makhachev, in a potential meeting inside the Octagon. Abdelaziz said he knows Burns doesn’t believe that, as he’d beat fellow top-ranked 155-pounder Beniel Dariush too.

This prompted a response from Burns, suggesting Abdelaziz put his money where his mouth is and wager on the potential fight.

A simple reply of “Done” then followed from Abdelaziz, however, no exact amount was agreed upon.

The lightweight division is certainly in an interesting spot at the moment. Charles Oliveira was forced to vacate the title after missing weight at UFC 274. Now, he’s slated to fight an opponent yet to be determined for the vacant strap.

That opponent is expected to be Makhachev. However, the UFC had previously planned on booking Makhachev against Dariush to determine the No. 1 contender for the title. It remains to be seen what the UFC will officially do next.

Despite the uncertainty, what cannot be denied is the dominance of both Oliveira and Makhachev throughout their current respective runs in the division. Oliveira has been making light work of his opponents with his submission game as of late.

The Brazilian finds himself on an 11-fight win streak at the moment. As for Makhachev, he has only ever lost one fight in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. He’s on a 10-fight win streak since his first loss in 2015.

Currently, the time couldn’t be more perfect for both men to be competing against each other. It will be interesting to see if the UFC decides to pull the trigger on that fight next.

What do you think of Gilbert Burns and Ali Abdelaziz betting on the potential Oliveira vs. Makhachev bout? Let us know in the comments!

Gilbert Burns thinks UFC lightweight Charles Oliveira is doing something that we haven’t seen before in the UFC Octagon.

Oliveira earned another win over Justin Gaethje in the UFC 274 headliner. Despite missing championship weight and being stripped of his title, he appeared undistracted and put on another impressive performance against another top lightweight contender.

While Oliveira isn’t the lightweight titleholder as of now, most fans and media recognize him as the lightweight champion. He earned the then-vacant title over Michael Chandler before defending it against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269.

Oliveira’s 11-fight winning streak has created comparisons between himself and former champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. After defeating Gaethje at UFC 254, the undefeated champion Nurmagomedov opted to walk away from the sport in the middle of his prime.

Oliveira isn’t planning on leaving MMA anytime soon, but speculation about what would happen in a hypothetical matchup between himself and Nurmagomedov has run rampant.

During a recent interview with MMA journalist Helen Yee, Burns explained how while he’s biased being Brazilian, he feels Oliveira presents a ton of issues for all lightweights including the retired Nurmagomedov.

“It’s different, you know?” Burns said of the Oliveira/Nurmagomedov comparisons. “Khabib was the guy that did the hardest thing: undefeated and left All the respect, but he left. Like I said, Oliveira’s been there since he was super young — put himself in the fire, fighting everybody, like I think he’s 11-0 coming on this streak that he’s coming right now, all finishes. How crazy is that? And finishing guys — Justin Gaethje in the first round, Dustin Poirier second round. If you don’t knock (him) out, he submits you.

“So I’m a fan of both, but right now, Oliveira is unbeatable. I don’t know. If they make that fight, for sure Khabib is different, but I don’t know, bro. Oliveira is on a different level right now.”

Oliveira could be on the verge of fighting Nurmagomedov’s protégé, Islam Makhachev, for the now-vacant lightweight title. Makhachev has called out Oliveira for a fight for years, as he recently revealed on social media.

Nurmagomedov has reiterated his desire to stay retired and focus on coaching other Dagestani MMA prospects like Makhachev, as well as leading the charge behind his Eagle FC promotion. While a matchup between Nurmagomedov and Oliveira seems highly unlikely, the conversation regarding the UFC lightweight GOAT could begin to ramp up in the coming years.

Khabib Nurmagomedov Claims Charles Oliveira Has No Ground Game – “He Tap Eight Times”

Former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov has stated that Charles Oliveira has no ground game, despite the Brazilian being known as one of the most lethal submission grapplers in the promotion.

It seems as if the rivalry between Charles Oliveria and the Islam Makhachev‘s camp seems to be heating up. Nurmagomedov, a long-time friend and training partner of Makhachev continues to take aim at Oliviera, all while bolstering Mahkavhevs title shot claim.

In an interaction with Henry Cejudo and Kamaru Usman at an Eagle FC event, ‘The Eagle’, while explaining a technique, he turns directly to the camera to the camera, to proclaim a Makhachev victory.

“This is what Islam is gonna do to Charles Oliveira,” Nurmagomedov said. “He is gonna ride him. You understand what I mean, like how you ride a horse, he is very good on this.

“Just save this video because a lot of people underestimate Islam, they think Charles Oliveira has ground game. He don’t have ground game, if you tap eight times in UFC, how can you say you have ground game?”

“You tap eight time, you understand?”

Khabib Nurmagomedov Is Not Impressed

Although there has been online speculation that some of the remarks put out on social media targeting Oliveira were not Khabib Nurmagomedov, but instead of the work of someone on his team, the Dagestani native really does seem unimpressed with the Brazilian.

“He impresses me a little bit, but every fight he goes down,” Nurmagomedov said during a recent interview with ESPN. “This is a little bit bad for him, every fight he goes down, a couple times. Last fight was how many, two, three knockdown? With Michael Chandler, with Dustin Poirier, with Justin Gaethje, he always goes down.”

“Nobody ever touched my face, and all the time he go down, people cannot compare me vs Charles Oliveira, he tap in UFC eight times.”

Ever since he has retired, there has always been speculation about the return of the former champion, but now, it has the possibility of heading that way.

If Oliveira and Makhachev do face off for the vacant title, which appears to be the direction UFC president Dana White is angling towards, what if Oliveira beats Makhachev? Could we see Khabib Nurmagodemov make a return to avenge his friend?

Beneil Dariush explains his interpretation of the “scale drama” that went down at UFC 274.

The official weigh-ins for UFC 274 were filled with controversy. Lightweight champion Charles Oliveira came in heavy for his title defense against Justin Gaethje and was subsequently stripped of the title.

Many fighters came to Oliveira’s defense saying they believed the official scale was not accurate. Oliveira himself also felt the reading was wrong. Nonetheless, he is won the fight and the title is left vacant.

UFC President Dana White spoke following the vent about measures he is planning to take in order for the scale to be protected. He claimed that fighters and their team members come to use the official scale the night before and mess with the settings. He will now place security by the scale around the clock to prevent this.

One man who is in the title hunt at 155 pounds, Beneil Dariush, was asked about this theory of scale tampering by White and he shared his thoughts with ESPN.

“He wasn’t going to miss half a pound, he’s not trying to give up his purse,” Dariush explained. “So I’m sure he was on weight like he said he was, I believe him. And as far as people getting on that scale and sitting on that scale and changing the kilos to pounds, totally true, all the time people do it. I mean, I’ve seen it. I’ve been doing my practice and I’ve seen people sitting on our scales and things like that. So I’ve seen all that I see both sides.

Dariush is ranked sixth in the division and could be on the shortlist of opponents next to fight Oliveira. As a potential title contender, he was watching the events of the weigh-in unfold. He believes the UFC made the right choice in stripping Oliveira.

“And you know a lot of people say Charles shouldn’t have been stripped. Here’s the problem if you don’t strip Charles, you can’t give Gaethje the belt if Gaethje won,” he said. “That was the issue. The reason why they took the belt from Charles was because if we’re having a title fight, and the belt belongs to Charles, he didn’t make 155 so they’re not fighting for the 155 belt. So that’s why they did it the way they did it. I understand why UFC did what they did. I understand why Charles feels the way he does. Like it’s just a poop situation.”

Dariush is currently rehabbing a leg injury that removed him from his scheduled bout with Islam Makhachev back in February. His timeline for a return is not set but would ideally be late summer.

Former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is impressed by Charles Oliveira but doesn’t believe there aren’t question marks with his standing in the UFC.

Oliveira is fresh off of his win over Justin Gaethje in the UFC 274 headliner. He was forced to vacate the title ahead of fight night due to missing championship weight.

While Oliveira isn’t technically the lightweight titleholder, many fans and media view him as the UFC lightweight champion. He’s now the No. 1 contender and will likely compete for the vacant title later this year.

Oliveira has impressed Nurmagomedov with his series of recent performances, but not with his strength of schedule.

During a recent interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Nurmagomedov explained his position regarding Oliveira.

“I believe he is champion. I believe. Even this — people talk about half-pound (weight miss), I believe he deserves, right now, this moment, he deserves to be champion,” Nurmagomedov said of Oliveira. “He is doing very good job, you know? But he is not undisputed, brother. When I finished, I was undisputed. I fight with Conor, I fight with interim champ Dustin Poirier, interim champ Justin Gaethje… These guys (were) on different time, not like when they fight versus Charles Oliveira.

“Charles is champion. He say, ‘We have champion, his name is Charles Oliveira.’ I agree with him. But he’s not undisputed, brother. He’s not undisputed. “

Nurmagomedov has been vocal in his stance for his protégé Islam Makhachev to get the next title shot against Oliveira. However, UFC President Dana White has previously said that Makhachev will need to fight and defeat Beneil Dariush in a rescheduled bout first before a shot at the belt.

Oliveira has recently drawn some comparisons to Nurmagomedov during his dominant run, but Nurmagomedov has denied any similarities between himself and the top lightweight contender.

Oliveira has emerged as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world and will look to reclaim the 155lb throne later this year. But according to Nurmagomedov, Oliveira still has some work to do to earn the ‘undisputed’ moniker.

UFC Welterweight title challenger Gilbert Burns, believes that Charles Oliveira would beat Islam Makhachev due to his striking being better all around than Makhachev’s at this point.

Oliveira has gone head to head with some of the best strikers in the lightweight division. The lightweight division has some of the most elite strikers in the UFC and is one of the most dangerous divisions in the entire sport. Oliveira has had times in all his fights when he out struck Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, and Justin Gaethje in his recent title run and defenses.

Justin Gaethje is known for his striking ability, and Oliveira rocked him in the first 10 seconds of the fight and even knocked him down. Makhachev’s striking is no where close to any of the previous three fighters mentioned, but his ground game and wrestling is one on the best we have ever seen in UFC history.

Gilbert Burns believes that Charles Oliveira may have a hand up in a title fight against Islam Makhachev

“If I was the matchmaker, I would make Islam vs Oliveira for sure,” Burns said in an interview with Helen Yee. “That’s a fight that is very intriguing. I still believe Oliveira can get the win, because his striking. The pressure that he does and the jiu-jitsu. People say all the sambo and hey I got it, but Oliveira is huge for that division…. I think he’s on a different level.”

Burns is ready to see the fight between Oliveira, much like mostly everyone involved in the sport. The only thing that may be holding the UFC back from making the fight at the moment, is the fact that Makhachev has yet to beat a top five ranked fighter in the division. He has also only beaten one top 10 fighter, Dan Hooker on short notice.

Burns himself is coming off an amazing bout against Khamzat Chimaev, that could have easily went either way. Burns is one of the best strikers in his division and he pairs that with phenomenal jiu-jitsu, much like Oliveira does.
