Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is in good spirits after undergoing an unexpected neck surgery yesterday.

Earlier today Weidman revealed via social media that he had a “disk replacement surgery.” Not much is known of the former champion’s procedure as of now, however, the Long Islander appears to be in good spirits.

“Kind of an unexpected neck surgery yesterday,” Weidman wrote. “I’ll explain soon, but I’m all good, and I’ll be healthy soon.”

Weidman also shared some additional photos as well as a video where he had to “take drain out of neck.”

This is the second surgery for the former middleweight titleholder in the last three years. He had previously undergone surgery in June 2016 to fix a herniated disk.

The “All American” last competed at UFC 230. He was winning his fight until he got caught by Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the final round. That loss was Weidman’s fourth in his last five outings.

Weidman’s immediate future is unclear. Soon after the loss to Souza, he stated he wanted to get right back to action. This surgery, however, will likely delay the “All American’s” return to the Octagon.

Former middleweight champion Chris Weidman says he doesn’t have any regrets after his third-round TKO loss to Jacare Souza.

Weidman has had a rough go of it as of late. He has dropped four of his last five fights. However, Weidman has looked good in his losses right up until the point he got clipped.

He and Jacare went toe-to-toe in the co-main event of last month’s UFC 230. Again, Weidman looked great right up until the point where he didn’t. It’s another setback for the New Yorker, but he doesn’t have any regrets. Weidman recently appeared on ESPN’s Ariel Helwani MMA show and talked about his latest defeat:

“I mean that’s crazy. Two times [fighting in] Madison Square Garden, third round, winning the fight and [I get] knocked out. It’s tough. This last fight I have zero regrets, I really don’t. Hindsight 20/20, I could look back and say ‘oh I could’ve done this differently or that differently,’ but at the end of the day I went out there and I left it all out there. I did everything I could to win the fight. I was feeling great on my feet, I felt really comfortable. He had hit me with some really good shots in the first and second round, I felt fine.

“So heading into the third round, I felt really no danger in the stand-up position. I felt like I was picking him apart and I felt great. So there was no need to look for takedowns. I felt like everything was going fine and then he hit me on the button, obviously.”

Building off UFC Denver’s most unexpected knockout, we decided to take a look at some of MMA’s most bizarre finishes. We have 25 years of fights to choose from.

Last weekend’s (Nov. 10, 2018) UFC Denver was the promotion’s 25th-anniversary show. The main event between Yair Rodriguez and Chan Sung Jung will go down in history as one of the best fights of all-time and one of the most insane ending sequences you will ever see in MMA.

The UFC has given fans 25 years of MMA and given birth to countless other promotions that have in turn provided fans with even more entertaining fights.

In a sport where you are literally fighting for your life, the term bizarre can be far-ranging. For that reason, and for the sake of this list, let’s just say a bizarre ending in a fight is something that is likely never to happen again.

Anderson Silva’s Broken Leg

When Anderson Silva broke his leg in his championship title rematch with Chris Weidman, it was the first time many fans had ever seen an injury of that ilk.

It was not, however, the first time that same leg break injury had happened inside the Octagon. The now-deceased Corey Hill broke his leg at UFC Fight for the Troops on Dec. 10, 2008. Unfortunately, many fighters in several different promotions have since suffered similar leg injuries.

Silva has now fully recovered from this bizarre fight-ending injury but he has only had three fights since that fateful night in December 2013.

Chris Weidman’s Coach Addresses Potential Weight Class Change

Chris Weidman’s coach also called the loss to Jacare Souza a setback.

Chris Weidman’s coach has talked about the latest fight that the former UFC middleweight champion was apart of inside of the Octagon. It was a tough loss as he was eyeing a title shot if he would’ve gotten his hand raised. Weidman lost in the co-headliner of UFC 230 to Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. It was a crushing defeat for the former champion.

Now, he and his team are looking forward. This leads us to Weidman’s longtime striking coach, Ray Longo, talking about his future in an interview on the Anik & Florian podcast.

“I tell you, this is pretty big setback, because with a win over Jacare he was looking good. He already had beat Gastelum.”

Longo continued by stating that he thinks to face Robert Whittaker for the middleweight title would’ve been tough.

“I think that’s always gonna be a great matchup for Chris. Whittaker would have been the tougher fight but I actually think Gastelum is gonna beat Whittaker so I think he was looking good.”

Weidman has gone 1-4 in his last five outings. Before this fight, Weidman had been out of action for more than a year due to a thumb injury. He sustained the injury during his fight against Kelvin Gastelum in July 2017. Thus, a move to light heavyweight might be in his future.

“Now he’s got a couple of things to decide,” Longo said (H/T to MMAFighting). “A couple of people mention maybe moving up to 205. I really did think the weight cut went really well but who knows? The more you get the weight-cut down and your brain’s not dehydrated.”

Weidman’s coach added that due to his potential dehydration issues, moving up a weight class might be best for him right now.

“The brain is the last place to get the fluid when you rehydrate. Maybe 205’s a better fit because I don’t see this ever happening in the gym. Ever. So maybe 205 might be a place where he comes in stronger, more coherent, all those things.”
