Out of respect for his friend and former light heavyweight champion, Dana White won’t put down Chuck Liddell over his reported comeback fight against Tito Ortiz.

Instead, White will go after the promoter behind the bout, Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy.

When White was asked about Liddell’s interest in the third fight against Ortiz, he was honest in his reasoning while speaking on the topic during the UFC Liverpool post-fight press conference (via MMA Mania), having been the person to coax Liddell into retirement back in 2010 after three consecutive knockout losses:

“I hope he’s coming out of retirement to be partners with De La Hoya and not to fight. I hope he doesn’t fight. Oscar De La Arum is not that bright, but I don’t know what he’s thinking. The last thing I want to do is shit on Chuck Liddell, because I love him, but I asked him to retire 10 years ago for a reason.”

Liddell ended his MMA career on an unfortunate downward spiral while Ortiz made the move to Bellator and won several high-profile fights before retiring himself after choking out Chael Sonnen.

De La Hoya had expressed interest right away in a trilogy match between the two UFC legends and hall-of-famers while fight fans and now White have criticized the idea, as “The Iceman” hasn’t fought in eight years and both men are well past their primes.

Do you agree with Dana White’s opinion on De La Hoya’s promotion of Liddell vs. Ortiz III?

In recent months, rumors have swirled indicating that former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, who currently sits at 47 years of age, could potentially be considering a return to action.

It started with “The Iceman” teasing a trilogy bout with his longtime rival Tito Ortiz, but more recently, Chael Sonnen has said that his next fight under the Bellator banner could very well be against Liddell.

According to Liddell, who spoke with TMZ regarding the topic, he hasn’t spoken with any promotion or promoter regarding a return to action. “The Iceman” did, however, say that a fight with Sonnen would be an ‘easy’ matchup for him.

Check out the full interview below:

If Liddell was indeed to make a return, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him ink a deal with Bellator, as Scott Coker and company have put together multiple ‘legends fights’ in the past. The former UFC champion, however, hasn’t competed since 2010, losing his last three bouts to Rashad Evans, Mauricio Rua and Rich Franklin, with all three of those losses coming by way of stoppage.

Sonnen, on the other hand, made his Bellator debut earlier this year, dropping a disappointing submission loss to Ortiz in the main event of Bellator 170. He then bounced back in the main event of Bellator: NYC, however, scoring a one-sided decision victory over longtime rival Wanderlei Silva.

Would you like to see Liddell come out of retirement to meet “The American Gangster”?

For some reason, rumors regarding a potential return to action for retired former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell have begun to swirl in recent memory. In the light of these rumors, ”The Iceman” has confirmed that he is indeed retired, although he didn’t exactly close the door on a potential return either.

Last night (June 3, 2017), the 47-year-old added more fuel to the fire by posting a picture to his official Instagram account of him staring down longtime rival and fellow former UFC champion Tito Ortiz with the caption ‘Why not?’:

Why not?

Liddell hasn’t competed since June 2010 when he suffered a stoppage loss to Rich Franklin at UFC 115. Prior to that, he had lost back-to-back fights by KO to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Rashad Evans. After his retirement, “The Iceman” accepted an office position with the UFC, but he was let go when the promotion was purchased by WME-IMG last year.

Ortiz, on the other hand, is coming off of a first round submission victory over Chael Sonnen in the main event of Bellator 170 last January. After the victory, the 42-year-old announced his retirement from mixed martial arts.

Liddell and Ortiz possess a rich a history, as the pair took part in one of the sport’s most iconic rivalries. The two would fight twice, with Liddell scoring a second round knockout victory over “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” at UFC 47 in April 2004 and a third round TKO victory at UFC 66 in Dec. 2006. They were supposed to meet for a third time after coaching opposite each other on season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), but Ortiz was forced to withdraw with an injury.

As of now, there appear to be no plans in place for Liddell’s return or for a trilogy bout between him and Ortiz, although Liddell did reportedly have lunch with Bellator President Scott Coker last week. Bellator would certainly be the most likely landing spot for a bout like this.

Would you like to see these two legends run it back for a third time?
