Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz had a staredown for the first time in several years.

It all went down on Thursday afternoon (July 5, 2018) at the UFC Hall of Fame red carpet ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada at Palms Resort Casino.

The two attended the UFC Hall of Fame 2018 ceremonies that saw the promotion celebrate the careers of MMA fighters as well as a historic fight between Shogun Rua and Dan Henderson.

Thus, this was a perfect time for Liddell and Ortiz to take the stage and gain some publicity to promote their upcoming third fight. Despite what the majority of the MMA community says, these two legends are going to compete even though they are no longer in their prime.

Earlier this week, Golden Boy officially announced that Liddell and Ortiz have finally agreed to make a third fight happen as they have signed the two fighters to promotional agreements.

Keep in mind that there is no date or location for this fight but an announcement with the official details coming at a later date.

This fight will air on pay-per-view and mark Golden Boy’s first MMA event. Liddell and Ortiz have fought twice throughout their legendary careers, with “The Iceman” knocking out Ortiz at UFC 47 in 2004 and UFC 66 in 2006.

The talks of this fight happening have been discussed for several years. Many fight fans believed that it was not going to happen once Liddell retired from the sport nearly a decade ago. However, that has all changed.

Ortiz finished up his successful career when submitted Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170 last year. Their rematch for the light heavyweight title at UFC 66 was the most successful UFC event ever at the time.

Joe Rogan is unsure how to feel about the Chuck Liddell vs. Tito Ortiz trilogy fight.

Earlier this week, it was officially announced that Liddell and Ortiz have finally agreed to make a third fight happen.

Golden Boy that has signed promotional agreements with Liddell and Ortiz. As of this writing, there is no date or location for this fight but an announcement with the official details should be coming soon.

What we do know is that this fight will air on pay-per-view and mark Golden Boy’s first MMA event.

Longtime UFC color commentator spoke about this fight alongside former UFC star Brendan Schaub on the latest episode of the Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show podcast where Rogan stated that he was “definitely gonna watch it” but there is something that bothers him about the fight and it appears to the be motivation behind making this fight happen.

“If they want to compete, if it’s because they want to compete, I wonder where it makes sense to tell them they can’t or they shouldn’t?” Rogan said (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting). “Because if they want to do it and they had money – what is it about it? Is it the motivation that bothers me? What is it about a fight like that? I think it’s the motivation that bothers me, a little bit.”

“[Chuck] has been saying that he misses it. It was his favorite thing and he misses it. If we were gonna live forever, I’d say definitely don’t do it because you’re just gonna keep damaging yourself. But if you’re not gonna live forever . . .”

Liddell and Ortiz have fought twice throughout their legendary careers, with “The Iceman” knocking out Ortiz at UFC 47 in 2004 and UFC 66 in 2006.

It could be argued that the main reasons behind making this fight happen despite both fighters being out of their prime are due to them wanting to fight again and thinking that it would draw huge on pay-per-view.

Dana White Calls Out Oscar De La Hoya Over Chuck Liddell Fight

Dana White isn’t a fan of Oscar De La Hoya’s interest in Liddell vs. Ortiz III…

Out of respect for his friend and former light heavyweight champion, Dana White won’t put down Chuck Liddell over his reported comeback fight against Tito Ortiz.

Instead, White will go after the promoter behind the bout, Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy.

When White was asked about Liddell’s interest in the third fight against Ortiz, he was honest in his reasoning while speaking on the topic during the UFC Liverpool post-fight press conference (via MMA Mania), having been the person to coax Liddell into retirement back in 2010 after three consecutive knockout losses:

“I hope he’s coming out of retirement to be partners with De La Hoya and not to fight. I hope he doesn’t fight. Oscar De La Arum is not that bright, but I don’t know what he’s thinking. The last thing I want to do is shit on Chuck Liddell, because I love him, but I asked him to retire 10 years ago for a reason.”

Liddell ended his MMA career on an unfortunate downward spiral while Ortiz made the move to Bellator and won several high-profile fights before retiring himself after choking out Chael Sonnen.

De La Hoya had expressed interest right away in a trilogy match between the two UFC legends and hall-of-famers while fight fans and now White have criticized the idea, as “The Iceman” hasn’t fought in eight years and both men are well past their primes.

Do you agree with Dana White’s opinion on De La Hoya’s promotion of Liddell vs. Ortiz III?

Tito Ortiz Comes Out Of Retirement For Chuck Liddell Trilogy

So….this is happening:

It looks like all that talk of Golden Boy getting into MMA promotion and putting on a trilogy fight between Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz are true, as “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” says he’s now out of retirement to “give the fans the fight they’ve been waiting for”.

Rumors of Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy getting into the MMA game spread like wildfire last weak, with the Liddell vs. Ortiz trilogy oddly at the center of it all.

Ortiz took to Instagram on Friday to announce his coming out of retirement to once again fight Chuck Liddell:

I want to give the fans the fight they have been waiting for #TitovsChuck3 #Redemption thanks to @primetime360esm with @get_repost Tito Ortiz is officially out of a year long retirement. While on @BitetheMic with @MikeTyson and @Tattootheone Tito was asked if he was going to fight @chuckliddell -Tito replied why doesn’t @OscarDeLaHoya @GoldenBoyBoxing get into #MMA and promote the fight. Oscar should promote it and give the fans what they want Tito Ortiz vs Chuck Liddell 3. @primetime360esm #goldenboymma #moneyfight #megafight #badblood #titovchuck3 #4thefans #Mexico #USA #Brazil #Canada #Japan #UK #Australia #Africa #China #Europe #Germany #Russia #ufc @espn @foxsports @sportscenter @cbssports @sportscenter @sportsillustrated

The two former UFC light heavyweight champions have certainly had differing endings in their respective careers, with Liddell retiring after suffering his third brutal knockout loss in a row back in 2010.

Meanwhile, Ortiz managed more of a fairy tale ending, having signed with Bellator before racking up a few wins before retiring after a submission victory over Chael Sonnen in 2017.

However, when the two fought in the past, “The Iceman” TKO’d Ortiz twice and clearly got the better of him. Those happened all the way back in 2004 and 2006, and Liddell never really looked the same following their second bout at UFC 66. He would end up losing the title to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 71.

This will be the first MMA fight Golden Boy will promote should the deal go through. The respected boxing promotion is backed by legend and former champion Oscar De La Hoya, who was extremely enthusiastic about the trilogy when recently asked about it.

Are you interested in a trilogy between “The Iceman” vs. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy”? Or is there a reason even Bellator may not touch this fight…
