A new interim UFC Heavyweight Champion has been crowned as Ciryl Gane vs. Derrick Lewis is in the books.

In the main event of UFC 265, Gane and Lewis did battle for the interim UFC Heavyweight Title. The action took place inside the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Lewis was the hometown favorite going into the fight but Gane didn’t allow the fans to leave the arena with joy.

It was clear from the start that Gane’s plan was to work Lewis from the outside and chop him down with leg kicks. Gane was patient throughout the fight and avoided “The Black Beast’s” punching power. The leg kicks were having an impact on the movement of Lewis and it was clear he was down 0-2 after two rounds of action.

In the third round, Gane sensed that he had Lewis hurt due to the leg kicks, so he took advantage with punches. Lewis fired off punches of his own but he found air and eventually hit the canvas. Referee Dan Miragliotta gave Lewis every opportunity to fight back but it was clear there was nothing left in the tank. Gane was awarded the third-round TKO win and the interim gold.

Francis Ngannou, the UFC Heavyweight Champion, took to his Twitter account to react to Gane’s big victory.

“Impressive performance from Gane! He’s now a legit contender. See you soon boy. When you know you know.”

With the win over Lewis, Gane has improved his perfect pro MMA record to 10-0. What has impressed many about Gane is that his first MMA fight took place just three years ago. He is now just one win away from becoming the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion.

Time will tell when Ciryl Gane will be able to go for the undisputed gold. Recently, Ngannou and UFC officials have butted heads over the booking of an interim title fight and fighter pay.

Undefeated still and now the newly-minted interim UFC heavyweight champion, Ciryl ‘Bon Gamin’ Gane has clinched the interim crown via a masterful striking performance to stop Derrick ‘The Black Beast’ Lewis with a third round flurry to round out UFC 265.

Decent first round for Gane who keeps Lewis pinned to the Octagon fence and lands a couple notable leg kicks as Lewis looks to load up whilst remaining patience awaiting a potential opening to uncork one shot. Some good moments for Gane at the end of the frame the form of a clubbing right hand and a nice, sharp and stiff jab which appeared to catch Lewis on his eye. 10-9 Gane.

Gane takes the second round as well against Lewis, tying up in the clinch and landing some good knees as well as point-fighting well all while controlling the centre of the Octagon. Likely two rounds in the bank for the undefeated Frenchman.

Pouring on the pressure in the third, Gane managed to stop Lewis with strikes on the ground after a flurry of unanswered shots following numerous leg kicks.

Below, catch the highlights from Gane’s interim title winning performance against Lewis.

Taking main event status, an interim heavyweight title bout between the most prolific heavyweight knockout artist in the organization’s history, Derrick ‘The Black Beast’ Lewis and the undefeated French striking standout, Ciryl ‘Bon Gamin’ Gane.

Last featuring in February, one-time undisputed title challenger, Lewis took home a massive second round uppercut knockout victory over Curtis Blaydes to lodge his fifth consecutive victory.

For the 9-0 Gane, the 31-year-old managed a rather comfortable unanimous decision win over Alexander Volkov in the main event of UFC Vegas 30 in June.

In the night’s co-headliner, former undisputed featherweight champion, Jose Aldo returns opposite compatriot, Pedro Munhoz in a bantamweight clash.

Returning to winning ways at UFC Vegas 17 in December, Aldo bested Team Oyama mainstay, Marlon Vera with a co-main event unanimous judging triumph.

Himself snapping a two-fight slide in his last outing, American Top Team staple, Munhoz took home a rematch win over Jimmie Rivera in February — beneath a main event of Jairzinho Rozenstruik and the aforenoted, Gane.
