Dustin Poirier vs. Colby Covington - Bisping Likes Rumored UFC 309 Fight

Michael Bisping likes the sound of a scrap between Dustin Poirier and Colby Covington.

After coming up short in his third and final shot at the lightweight world title, ‘The Diamond’ left the door open for a return should something enticing come his way. Enter Covington, one of the most outspoken and outlandish characters in the UFC.

Colby Covington and Dustin Poirier

Recent rumors have suggested that Poirier and Covington could collide at UFC 309 when the promotion heads back to Madison Square Garden for a pay-per-view event tentatively scheduled for November 9.

Discussing the possibility of a fight between the pair of three-time title challengers, Bisping believes it would present a good opportunity for ‘Chaos’ to get back into the title picture while allowing Poirier the chance to score some redemption for his friend, Jorge Masvidal.

Colby Covington and Dustin Poirier

“He’s [Colby Covington] got his opportunities,” Bisping said on his podcast with Adam Catterall. “He’s not getting that opportunity again, anytime soon. He needs something big. He needs something juicy. He needs something to get himself up for it. Dustin Poirier is that name. A legend of the game. A guy that has been there, done it, got the T-shirt. You’ve just mentioned beef. Bit of bad blood. Dustin Poirier’s mates with Jorge Masvidal, he needs to get that one back for his pal, don’t he?” (h/t MMA News).

Bisping thinks the build-up for Colby Covington vs. Dustin Poirier would be ‘crazy’

Like Poirier, Covington is 2-3 in his last five fights. But unlike Poirier, all of those losses for Covington have come in UFC title fights. His only wins in the last five years have come against Tyron Woodley and Jorge Masvidal — two fighters who aren’t even with the promotion anymore.

You’d have to go back to 2018 just to find a win for Covington that came against a fighter still on the UFC roster.

Still, ‘Chaos’ has proven himself to be a valuable asset for the promotion, primarily because of his impeccable ability to sell a fight. Bisping thinks that could mean big business for the UFC should they see fit to pair up one of MMA’s top trash talkers with a heavy-hitting fan favorite.

“Listen, Colby, say what you want about him. The man’s a promotion machine. With all like the personal stuff that they can go to, They would blow that fight up, like crazy. I’d want to see it.”

Covington has not competed since a decisive decision loss against Leon Edwards at UFC 296 in what will hopefully be his final shot at UFC gold.

Dustin Poirier has had an illustrious UFC career despite never winning an undisputed championship. He’s fought for the title three times, but came up short against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira, and Islam Makhachev. He did become the interim UFC lightweight kingpin by beating Max Holloway, though.

Colby Covington has had a similar run in the UFC welterweight division. He won the interim title by beating Rafael dos Anjos but is 0-3 in undisputed title fights against the likes of Kamaru Usman and Leon Edwards.

Although both Covington and Poirier have still been adamant about fighting for titles, rumors suggest that they might meet in the Octagon soon. Here’s why Michael Bisping and award-winning broadcaster Adam Catterall are big fans of the matchup…

Michael Bisping Excited To See Dustin Poirier vs. Colby Covington As The UFC 309 Co-Main Event Under Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic

Bisping and Catterall discussed the potential matchup between Poirier and Covington on the Michael Bisping Podcast YouTube channel recently. As soon as ‘The Count’ brought up the rumors, Catterall couldn’t hide his excitement.

“He’s [Colby Covington] got his opportunities. He’s not getting that opportunity again, anytime soon. He needs something big. He needs something juicy. He needs something to get himself up for it. Dustin Poirier is that name. A legend of the game. A guy that has been there, done it, got the T-shirt. You’ve just mentioned beef. Bit of bad blood. Dustin Poirier’s mates with Jorge Masvidal, he needs to get that one back for his pal, don’t he?”

The radio and TV presenter also highlighted that “The Diamond” is friends with Jorge Masvidal. The latter fought Covington in March 2022 after their long-time friendship turned bitter. Masvidal and “Chaos” have even had physical altercations outside the UFC, and their rivalry is as personal as it gets.

So, fighting Covington is a great way for Poirier to avenge Masvidal’s loss. He’s admitted to not liking the former interim UFC welterweight champion as well, and Bisping is very excited to see this beef getting settled inside the Octagon.

It’s unlikely for both Poirier and Covington to get title shots in their divisions now. However, as two of the biggest stars in the UFC, their fight can easily generate all the hype in the world. Bisping credited Covington for being an excellent promoter who can easily capitalize on the real resentment with his opponent this time around.

“Listen, Colby, say what you want about him. The man’s a promotion machine. With all like the personal stuff that they can go to, They would blow that fight up, like crazy. I’d want to see it.”

If the rumors are true, Poirier vs. Covington will be scheduled for UFC 309, the card expected to feature Jones vs. Miocic as the main event. It is safe to assume that tons of fans will tune in to watch the fight regardless of when it happens, though.

Covington, a former interim welterweight titleholder and the current number number four ranked divisional contender, has been out of action since he headlined UFC 296 back in December, suffering his third loss in an undisputed title fight, in a decision loss to Leon Edwards.

Colby Covington once more hits out at LeBron James

And expected to make his return later this year amid links to a showdown with the unbeaten, Ian Garry, as well as a grudge fight with former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier – Covington has once more stoked the flames on his rivalry with NBA megastar, James on social media.

“You have ‘Captain I Hate America’ LeBron James bestowed the honor of carrying the stars and stripes? Colby Covington said in a video. “When I heard that he was going to be the one carrying his country’s flag, I thought it was going to be for China. What happened LeBron? Did you finally give equality and justice to all those children and women sowing your shoes?”

“Did you bring those jobs back to the States?” Colby Covington continued. “Or would that mess with your profit margin?”

Earning himself another gold medal at this summer’s Olympic Games in Paris, James alongside, Stephen Curry, Anthony Edwards, Kevin Durant, Derrick White, Tyrese Haliburton, Jayson Tatum, Joel Embiid, Jrue Holiday, Bam Adebayo, Anthony Davis, and Devin Hooker – team USA defeated France with a 98-87 score in the men’s final gold medal match.

Belal Muhammad Rips 'Coward' Colby Covington: 'Biggest Clown in the UFC'

Belal Muhammad is more than happy to face anyone the promotion puts in front of him. Except for Colby Covington.

‘RememberThe Name’ delivered a dominant five-round performance against Leon Edwards in Manchester last month, leaving with the welterweight world title wrapped around his waist.

Belal Muhammad

Without missing a beat, the failed three-time UFC title challenger immediately went to work on social media, slamming Muhammad and fishing for another undeserved shot at UFC gold.

“It’s funny. He’s literally the biggest clown in the UFC,” Muhammad told MMA Fighting. “It’s embarrassing to see how he’s trying to grasp for any sort of attention and say anything. ‘Let me catch him outside.’ Bro, I wish I see you outside. Let’s see what you would do. I literally called him out since 2017 when I fought in Australia. This guy’s a coward.

“But that’s what he does. He shied away from that Ian Garry fight. He said it wasn’t worth his time. If he would have won that fight, his name could have been right back in the mix. So now he looks dumb. He’s a clown. I’m wondering what he’s going to do next.

“There’s nobody out there that I see him saying yes to. He’s going to wait and hope that Tony Ferguson comes back and fights one more fight and then he’s going to win that and say, ‘See I deserve to be in there, look what I just did to Tony Ferguson!’”

1861439151.0

Going 2-3 in his last five fights with all three of the losses coming in title fights, it’s hard to imagine ‘Chaos’ weaseling his way into another shot without first picking up a few noteworthy wins in the division.

His latest appearance inside the Octagon delivered dismal results with him being systematically shut down by Leon Edwards over the course of five rounds at UFC 296.

Belal Muhammad

“There’s zero percent chance,” Muhammad said of Covington getting another title shot. “I said he sucked before the Leon Edwards fight and they gifted him the title shot. There’s nobody in the top five that he could beat. There’s nobody in there where I could see him and say, ‘Well, if he beats him, there’s a chance.’

“I don’t see him accepting any top-five fights and I definitely don’t see him beating any top fighters if he gets that chance.”

Belal Muhammad ready to hand Shavkat Rakhmonov his first career loss

Instead, Belal Muhammad would rather focus his attention on some of the legit killers atop the welterweight division. Specifically, undefeated finisher Shavkat Rakhmonov.

“He’s the boogeyman,” Muhammad said of Rakhmonov. “The guy that everyone thinks will dominate everybody. When I look at stylistically what I’ll be able to do to him and what I’ve seen, there’s nothing he shows me where I’m like, ‘Oh man, I’ve got to be afraid of this or that.’ He’s not a specialist anywhere. Obviously, he’s a specialist in finishing, but I’ve only been finished once in my life.”

‘Nomad’ is a perfect 18-0 in his mixed martial arts career with a 100% finish rate. In his last three outings, Rakhmonov has put away Neil Magny, Geoff Neal, and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. He currently sits as the No. 3 ranked contender in the division.

Donald Trump Names His Favorite UFC Fighter and it’s NOT who you expect

Donald Trump Favorite MMA Fighter Khabib Covington

Colby Covington is likely punching air somewhere while wearing his Donald Trump themed jammies. This week, on a live stream, presidential candidate Donald Trump named his favorite UFC fighter; and it’s not the MAGA-obsessed welterweight.

Donald Trump Favorite MMA Fighter

Sitting down with video game streamer Adin Ross, the New York-born Donald Trump discussed a whole host of things including his favorite UFC fighter. Trump has long been a supporter of the UFC and MMA. Dana White, UFC president, has spoken at his conventions in multiple years. Trump even helped support the UFC with his casinos when the organization was struggling. The luxury hotel owner was also a financial backer of UFC competitor Affliction.

Donald Trump said:

“Well, I think Khabib. Khabib was 29-0, and then his father died and he stopped. I think he never lost a round. He fought many times, he never lost a round. I got to meet him at a fight, two fights ago, as I walked in with Dana… I met Khabib and he said ‘You are the man who could stop the war’ talking about the war in Ukraine and Russia” [Ht BJPenn]

Donald Trump says his favorite UFC fighter in history is the Dagestani-Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov. ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov retired as the lightweight world champion with an unbeaten record in his professional career. Along the way, the Russian had defeated notable fighters such as Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje, and his rival Conor McGregor.

Welterweight contender Colby Covington must be upset at this news. For years ‘Choas’ Covington has read Trump books in public, wore MAGA hats to press conferences, and even worn clothing with the face of Donald Trump on it. To be so obsessed with this man and then have him not like you back must feel like a slap in the face.

Additionally, Trump once watched Covington compete but walked out when he was speaking. To add, Colby Covington is certainly not a fan of Khabib Nurmagomedov who he has trash-talked repeatedly, about his family, manager, and training partners.

Colby Covington MAGA Donald Trump

Colby Covington is winless in his multiple bids to become a UFC champion. Since 2020 he has earned a UFC record of 2-3. The US-born ‘Choas’ is largely known for his antics outside of the octagon.

'I want to fight Colby Covington' - Michael Chiesa calls out idle welterweight for battle of the Northwest

After an impressive first-round finish against Tony Ferguson in Abu Dhabi, TUF alumnus Michael Chiesa has the perfect opponent in mind for his next appearance.

Chiesa’s appearances inside the Octagon have been few and far between in recent years, but ‘Maverick’ is ready to get right back to work after putting away the former interim lightweight titleholder with relative ease inside Etihad Arena.

Michael Chiesa

During a post-fight interview, Chiesa called for a clash with three-time title challenger Colby Covington to determine who the best wrestler in the Pacific Northwest truly is.

“I want to fight Colby Covington. I’ve been saying this for years,” Chiesa said. “That guy can sit on the sidelines and say whatever he wants. I’m not chasing the ranking. I don’t give a sh*t. I just want to find out who is the best fighter. Who is the best welterweight in the Pacific Northwest? I know he resides in Dade County, Mr. 305, but let’s find out who’s the best in the Northwest. Is it me or is it you?

“That’s what I want to find out. Are you going to idly sit down and do nothing? Or are you going to come back and fight? Keep your ranking, I don’t give a sh*t. I just want to find out who’s the best in the Northwest” (h/t Sherdog).

Michael Chiesa

Colby Covington clings to his No. 4 ranking despite little activity and even fewer wins

Like Chiesa, Covington is 2-3 in his last five, though ‘Chaos’ is barely averaging one fight per year at this point. Still, that hasn’t stopped the staunch MAGA supporter from talking his way into a title opportunity — or three of them. Covington came up short in all three bids, losing to Kamaru Usman twice before getting shut down by Leon Edwards in his last outing.

gettyimages 1861516065 612x612 1

Covington appeared to be on a collision course with rising contender Ian Machado Garry after ‘Chaos’ shared some distasteful remarks regarding Garry’s marriage to TV personality Layla Machado Garry. Unfortunately, interest in that fight quickly waned after ‘The Future’ claimed Covington had declined the UFC’s offer to make it happen.

Covington has since denied that the promotion ever offered him the fight.

Despite his limited activity and zero wins over anyone in the current welterweight top 15, Covington continues to cling to his No. 4 ranking, making him a target for fighters like Garry who is steadily working his way up the ladder.

However, it looks like ‘Chaos’ is more interested in waiting for undeserved title fights or marquee matchups against fighters on an active losing streak.
