Currently, no bout is in place for UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and his first career title defense.

It has long been expected that Colby Covington would be the first man to challenge “The Nigerian Nightmare.” However, those negotiations have fallen through, with no resolution in sight for now. UFC president Dana White was asked about the situation during the UFC 244 pre-fight press conference yesterday. The UFC boss went off on Covington for the failed negotiations.

“Here’s the thing with that,” White said. “Obviously, you heard me say in interviews after that fight that that was the fight I was going to make. So, Colby Covington can say whatever he says, we make fights for a living, that’s what we do. We go after guys we say, ‘This is next, this is the date, do you want the fight?’

“Right? And obviously, he wanted more money to fight Usman, we went back-and-forth, this is the second fight he’s done it. He had a fight in Dallas too, if you don’t want to fight Usman, then we’ll give you Tyron Woodley. He turned down Tyron Woodley too. You either want to fight or you don’t. With Colby Covington is ready to fight, he’ll let us know.”

It remains to be seen if Covington is still targeted for a fight with Usman next. Challenger Leon Edwards remains in the hunt as well, as he has racked up an impressive win streak of his own. However, with Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz set for early November, the winner of that contest could very well be next in line for the 170-pound strap instead.

What do you make of White’s comments on Covington and his failed negotiations to fight Usman?

UFC president Dana White claims that a showdown with Kamaru Usman wasn’t the only bout Colby Covington was offered.

White addressed the road leading up to booking Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal in the main event of UFC 244 on Nov. 2. Initially, Usman was scheduled to defend his UFC welterweight title against Covington. Negotiations fell apart with “Chaos.”

White Claims Covington Turned Down Usman/Woodley

During a UFC 244 press conference, White told reporter Phoenix Carnevale that Covington turned down the bout with Usman and even refused to fight Tyron Woodley when offered (via ESPN).

“Colby Covington can say whatever he wants. We make fights for a living, that’s what we do. We go after guys and say, ‘This is next, this is the date, do you want the fight?’ And obviously, he wanted more money to fight Usman. We went back and forth. This is the second time he’s done it. He had a [title] fight in Dallas [last year], too. So, we said if you don’t want to fight Usman, then we’ll give you Tyron Woodley. He turned down Tyron Woodley, too. You either want to fight or you don’t. When Colby Covington wants to fight, he’ll let us know.”

During a recent appearance on BJPENN Radio, Covington said the UFC does “slave negotiations.”

“That’s how UFC does business, they do the bully tactics,” he said. “They do the slave labor negotiations. It’s sick man. They don’t want to pay any of the fighters because they want everybody to be poor, so they keep back coming back and fighting all the time, and fighting six times a year.”

Colby Covington has beef with tons of members of the UFC roster – including those within his own gym of American Top Team (ATT).

The most notable being Jorge Masvidal, his former best friend, and Dustin Poirier. Covington even teased that things have gotten so bad he might have to leave ATT. However, ATT owner and agent Dan Lambert tells The Score he doesn’t think that will happen. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“We got a big gym, and we got a lot of coaches with a lot of experience in dealing with issues that arise between fighters,” Lambert said. “So I’d be surprised if anyone exited the gym over a beef with another fighter. That’s just not the way it works.”

Lambert has been around the MMA game for quite some time. Given the current circumstances between Covington, Poirier, and Masvidal, he doesn’t see enough to warrant a fighter leaving the gym.

“People leave gyms for different reasons,” Lambert said. “I don’t think having beef with another fighter at the gym is a real good reason. There’s no need to have to train together. There’s no need to have to be together. So, you don’t like someone in your place of work, you just quit your job?”

Do you think Covington will remain with American Top Team?

If it was even possible, it looks like Colby Covington is in more hot water with another UFC fighter. This time, heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic.

According to Miocic, Covington said some stuff to his wife following his win over Daniel Cormier at UFC 241 last month. Because of that, he plans on having a chat with “Chaos” but just a regular one:

“I’m not talking about that kid, I’m kinda upset with that kid,” Miocic said in a recent interview. “He was saying stuff to my wife after my fight. I’m going to have to talk to him. Just a normal conversation. I’m not going to go out and take his head out. Just want to talk to him.

“My wife was walking to me in the cage. He was saying something to her and my manager being the man that he is, told him to shut the f*ck up. I’m going to find out, I’m like the FBI, I will find out what he said and go up to him and talk about it.”

Miocic is not the only one with problems with Covington. The list includes the likes of welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, his manager Ali Abdelaziz, Jorge Masvidal, Dustin Poirier and probably many others.

The latter two happen to be former teammates at American Top Team as well.

What do you make of this news? Are you even surprised?
