Jorge Masvidal beat Leon Edwards over the head with belt UFC 287

Jorge Masvidal (35-17 MMA) has played down the beef between him and UFC Welterweight champion, Leon Edwards (21-3 MMA) exclaiming that the feud was never “personal”.

The one-time BMF champion recently chose to hang his gloves up at UFC 287, after going toe-toe against the brawler, Gilbert Burns (22-6 MMA).

Although Masvidal didn’t shy away from the relentless pressure of ‘Durinho’, it was evident that the 38-year-old was struggling to keep up with the pace from one of the world’s best fighters.

Unfortunately, he lost his fight against Burns via a unanimous decision and hasn’t look like the same fighter he was back in 2019.

Jorge Masvidal explains the difference between the beef he has with Leon Edwards compared to Colby Covington

Jorge Masvidal is well-known for his infamous bust up with some of the biggest names on the UFC’s roster. Whilst appearing on Jake Paul’s video podcast, ‘B.S. w/ Jake Paul’, Masvidal broke down two of his most famous beefs during his time with the UFC.

‘Gamebred’ began clarifying that he has never had anything against Leon Edwards, despite the viral altercation between the two of them at UFC London in 2019.

Although the pair continued to exchange jabs back and forth on social media throughout the years, Masvidal reaffirmed he has never held any grudges towards Edwards.

“With me and Leon, it was never personal. He just crossed a line, like, bro, I’m doing an interview, you’re trying to punk me again. That’s not going to happen. He’s already talking wild and s*** on Twitter, but I don’t have nothing personal,” Masvidal exclaimed.

Jorge Masvidal understands the fight business better than most, rivalries are part of the game. However, Colby Covington (17-3 MMA) choose to take things too far and make it personal, in spite of the fact the pair used to be best friends and teammates.

“Colby’s just a different situation. That motherf*****, I just don’t like his ass,” Masvidal expressed.

“That dude and me will never be cool, just because he brought up my kids in numerous situations,” Masvidal said. “He brought up things from my life, and that motherf***** lived on my couch for like eight months. He had like one or two pro fights, broke his hand, couldn’t f****** afford rent or nothing.

Their feud turned into a fight that headlined at UFC 272, in which Covington emerged with the win via a unanimous decision.

The issue when fighters get a bit too personal, whatever happens in the cage doesn’t necessary squash the beef.

Jorge Masvidal was also involved in an alleged assault on Covington outside a steakhouse in Miami a few weeks after their fight back in 2022. He was eventually arrested and hit with several felony charges, including aggravated battery and criminal mischief.

“Allegedly this, allegedly that,” Masvidal said. “He’s a b****! If he were here right now, he’d run the f*** out.”

By the sounds of it, the pair will be going back and forth for the rest of the foreseeable future.

Colby Covington predicts finish of Leon Edwards in UFC title fight I'm gonna nail him

Former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington has claimed that fans and judges alike will be plotting against him during his impending title clash with Leon Edwards – predicting a finish over the current UFC titleholder.

Covington, a former interim gold holder, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 272 back in March of last year, rebinding to the winner’s enclosure with a unanimous decision victory against Jorge Masvidal.

As for Edwards, the Birmingham native headlined UFC 286 in March, defeating common-foe and former pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman in a close, majority decision win on home soil in the pair’s championship trilogy rubber match.

Expected to book his second attempted welterweight title defense before the close of this year, Edwards, a staple of Team Renegade BJJ & MMA – has insisted the UFC have yet to approach him with a fight offer to take on challenger, Covington – despite noting his interest in a return at UFC 294 in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Colby Covington breaks down earmarked fight with Leon Edwards

Previewing his game plan for a showdown with champion, Edwards, Covington has claimed that volume will be key in his pursuit of gold against the former, whom he plans on finishing and leaving judges out of the equation – predicting a rather biased result otherwise.

“I know where I’m good: volume,” Colby Covington said during a recent interview with MSCS Media. “Leon (Edward) – how to prepare for it, I was already preparing. Hey, I know the judges are going to be against me, the crowd’s probably gonna be against me. I gotta go finish this guy, this cannot go to the judges’ decision. So, I was training like, literally throwing 500 punches a round in training – volume, volume, and just push myself to a level I’ve never got to before.”

“Mainly, to prepare for him it’s just heavy, heavy volume, high pressure,” Colby Covington explained. “No one wants a tought fight. No one wants you in their face constantly from second one to minute 25. My biggest thing for preparing for him is just heavy volume, pressure, and I know I’m gonna nail him. I know I’m gonna break him mentally, physically – everything.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Colby Covington discredits Jon Jones as MMA GOAT due to past steroid abuse, nominates another PED user

Colby Covington

Colby Covington has discredited Jon Jones as the greatest mixed martial artist of all time, suggesting that the designation should only go to a “clean-cut athlete” while also taking a dig at the fighter’s past legal troubles.

Covington is gearing up for an inexplicable third crack at the UFC welterweight title later this year, currently held by British national Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards. After spending a year lurking in the shadows, ‘Chaos’ re-emerged ahead of UFC 286, weighing in as the official backup for the trilogy bout between Edwards and former welterweight king Kamaru Usman.

Since then, Colby Covington has called out practically every fighter on the roster for one reason or another. This time, he’s taking aim at the general consensus GOAT of MMA, Jon Jones. During his latest interview, ‘Chaos’ sought to discredit an ESPN article calling ‘Bones’ the greatest fighter of all time. He even managed to deliver his own political spin on the reasoning.

“That’s opinion-based,” Covington told MSCS Media in response to Jones being called the greatest fighter of all time. “That’s whoever’s opinion that was writing that from ESPN that day. That’s cool, that’s your opinion but there’s probably 20, 30, 40 million people in America that don’t think the opposite. People in the Republican party respect people that are blue-collar, that have a clean slate, that aren’t breaking the law, doing these violent acts.

“Everybody knows the multiple steroid tests that he failed so how can you call yourself a clean-cut athlete and the greatest of all time when you cheated on multiple steroid tests and broke many laws? For me, the greatest fighter of all time has to be a good fighter in the cage and outside the cage” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Colby Covington Contradicts Himself by Nominating Another Steroid Absuer For GOAT Status

Jon Jones’ substance abuse, performance-enhancing or otherwise, has been well-documented over the years. But in an interesting twist, Colby Covington nominated another name for GOAT status that has his own lengthy history of steroid abuse.

“A guy that stands out to me: Chael Sonnen,” Covington said. “A guy from the same place that I came from. Oregon wrestling, those roots and became a larger-than-life figure and was able to transcend the sport and move the pay-per-view needle. And he’s a great person outside. A family man, fights for the republic, loves Donald Trump, God-fearing American. We need more guys like that on our side.”

In 2014, the same year Colby Covington debuted for the UFC, Chael Sonnen tested positive for an assortment of banned substances including human growth hormone (HGH), recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO), anastrozole, and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Being his third time testing positive, Sonnen was suspended for two years by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and was subsequently fired by both the UFC and FOX who he had worked for as an analyst. Sonnen has also openly admitted to juicing on more than one occasion, even labeling himself an expert in the field.

It feels like Colby Covington is more concerned with a fighter’s political affiliation than their actual accomplishments inside the Octagon which is a little on the nose for a guy who has gone 2-2 in his last four fights, lacks a single win against a current top 15 opponent, and is staring down the barrel of a largely undeserved welterweight title opportunity.

Leon Edwards urges UFC welterweights to earn title shot there's no freebies

Despite appearing on the cusp of a welterweight title defense against the outspoken, Colby Covington, current UFC champion, Leon Edwards has urged contenders in the weight class to land themselves a deserved shot at his throne.

Edwards, the current undisputed welterweight champion, most recently headlined UFC 286 back in March on home soil, successfully defending his crown in a close, majority decision win over Kamaru Usman in his trilogy rubber match with the former pound-for-pound number one.

Successfully defending his championship for the first time, Birmingham native, Edwards had struck gold back in August of last year, stopping Auchi native, Usman with a spectacular, highlight-reel fifth round high-kick KO win at UFC 278.

Expected to make his second attempted title knockback against the aforenoted, Covington, Edwards rejected the opportunity to make another July homecoming in London, confirming how he prefers a lay-off until October, potentially at a UFC 294 event in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Leon Edwards talks have been held regarding a fight with Colby Covington next

Receiving a slew of call outs from the likes of Clovis native, Covington, as well as the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev – Edwards has called for welterweight competition to separate themselves from the chasing pack.

“These guys want to sit out, complain, and moan about the title shot without fighting,” Leon Edwards told MMA Fighting. “I had to do 10 in a row to get my title shot. These guys are coming off one win, one loss, one win – demanding title shots. I feel like they should fight each other. Either Colby (Covington) versus (Gilbert) Burns, or Belal (Muhamamd) versus Colby. However (sic) they wanna do it. Whoever wins, that’s me next.”

“The UFC hasn’t spoke to us and there’s no talks of that fight [with Colby Covington] happening,” Leon Edwards explained. “He’s just talking just to talk – this is the guy that sat out for over a year, turned down fight after fight. I [accepted a fight with] Khamzat (Chimaev) when no wanted to fight Khamzat – I am willing to fight whoever, whenever, as long as they deserve it. There will be no giveouts, there will be no freebies here, Go earn your way and title shot is yours.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Colby Covington offers Conor McGregor welterweight title shot I love what he's done UFC

Ahead of his expected Octagon return against Leon Edwards later this year, former interim gold holder, Colby Covington claims he would be open to a future welterweight title defense against ex-two-weight champion, Conor McGregor – heaping praise on the Dubliner.

Covington, the current #2 ranked welterweight contender, is expected to make his Octagon return later this year in an undisputed title fight against division kingpin, Edwards, with the Birmingham native targeting a comeback for his next title defense in October of this year at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The outspoken, Covington has been sidelined from active competition since he headlined UFC 272 back in March of last year, bringing an end to his lengthy rivarly with former title challenger, the recently retired, Jorge Masvidal in a one-sided unanimous decision victory.

As for McGregor, the former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion has been sidelined himself since fracturing his left tibia and fibula against Covington’s former teammate, Dustin Poirier in July 2021.

Colby Covington gushes over former UFC champion, Conor McGregor

Expected to fight Michael Chandler at the welterweight limit in his Octagon return – which is earmarked to potentially take place in December, the Crumlin striker has been offered a surprising shot at welterweight gold by Covington, should he beat Edwards for the title.

“He’s (Conor McGregor) a great fighter – a history-maker,” Colby Covington said on the MSCS Media Podcast. “He’s made history multiple times. Knocking out Jose Aldo in six (sic) seconds was one of the most incredible things that’s ever happened in the UFC. The things he’s done in the sport, no one’s every been able to do.”

“Conor’s the ultimate showman and he’s the ultimate businessman,” Colby Covington explained. “I love what Conor’s done. I hope to be able to cross paths with him and fight him someday after I win this world title against Leon ‘Edward Scissor Hands’ (Edwards) from the U.K. That could be my next fight in line. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Conor for what he’s done in the sport. He’s made it possible for every fighter.” (Transcribed by MMA News)
