Nate Diaz responds to Conor McGregor’s boxing video in the most Nate Diaz way possible…

Earlier this week Conor McGregor released a video of his boxing sparring at SBG Ireland. Given his profession, this isn’t exactly out of the norm, but in this instance it caused quite a media frenzy. Since defeating Eddie Alvarez by stunning TKO at UFC 205, McGregor has entered a cold war, of sorts, with his employers. Claiming he’d only return to box Floyd Mayweather next, ‘The Notorious’ again irks UFC president Dana White. Although he is by far their biggest asset, the UFC has a bit of a situation developing with McGregor.

Returning to the subject of today’s article, why all the fuss? During the 15 seconds of footage McGregor released, he appears to eat a couple of clean strikes. Obviously this is nothing out-of-place, but given his ambition to fight Mayweather, the video has been heavily scrutinised. In just a matter of days, the clip has been viewed nearly two million times.

Criticism of McGregor’s Boxing

Responding to the now-infamous clip, followers on Instagram have been criticising the Irishman’s boxing skills. Of course his achievements in the octagon speak for themselves, his striking more than any other, but a boxing match with Mayweather? Many fans clearly believe this to be an ill-fated aspiration.

Among those who think McGregor’s boxing could use some work is none other than Nate Diaz. Having fought ‘The Notorious’ twice in 2016, going 1-1, the younger Diaz brother is still firing shots regularly. Check out his comment on a shared version of the McGregor boxing clip:

Nate’s Not The Only One

After seeing the clip, FOX Sport’s Jay & Dan created a parody advert featuring McGregor’s boxing. Eerily reminiscent of when everyone bashed Rousey’s boxing, the clip FOX created is somewhat strange to see from a reputable media body.

Nonetheless, it’s pretty amusing:

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor continued his assault on the stars of MMA this week. Talking to the stage at the UFC 205 presser, McGregor’s performance was almost a carbon copy of the ‘Go Big’ conference. Blasting just about anybody and everybody, ‘The Notorious’ also found himself a new rival in Jeremy Stephens. Since their back-and-forth on stage this week, Stephens has gone on to blast McGregor as a ‘ginger crackhead,’ claiming the Irish star hid from him backstage following their spat.

As we know, it’s not just the stars of the UFC that ‘The Notorious’ rubs up the wrong way. After feuds with the stars of the WWE and pro boxing surfaced, it was clear that everyone wants a piece of the featherweight champion. The 145-pound division seems to be seething in McGregor’s absence, leading to interim champion Jose Aldo’s recent boil-over. Demanding a release from his UFC contract, Aldo cited McGregor’s three fights in different weight divisions as one of many reasons. To the case in point, multiple divisions in the world of boxing is commonplace, and one man who recently said he’d fight McGregor in the squared circle is Manny Pacquiao.

McGregor vs. Pacquiao

Eight-division champion and modern boxing legend Manny Pacquiao recently said he’d be willing to fight Conor McGregor in a boxing match. Beef with Floyd Mayweather earlier this year lead to wild rumours of a fight with the Irish striker, and ‘Pac Man’ seemed open to join the trend. Discussing McGregor’s most recent fight with Nate Diaz at UFC 202, Pacquiao’s coach Freddy Roach says he wasn’t impressed. Here’s the famed boxing trainer’s comments to ES News:

“At least [he needs three years to get ready for a boxing fight]. He punched like a girl. I mean that’s why the other guy couldn’t get – he couldn’t hurt the other guy. Well, he did knock him down three times. Diaz is usually a bit tougher than that.”

Punches Like a Girl?

Acknowledging that MMA and boxing are two very different sports is a fair assessment. Even in terms of the striking, boxing specifically in MMA, it’s a whole different ball game. Did McGregor punch like a girl? You’d have to ask Nate Diaz. Roach continues, putting a damper on fans’ hopes of seeing McGregor in a boxing match with Pacquiao:

“MMA and boxing do not mix. What rules are they going to fight under? Whatever rules they fight under, that’s whose going to win the fight. I mean he’s (McGregor) not a boxer, he’s (Pacquiao) not a wrestler. It’s fucking two separate sports.”

Conor McGregor has a fierce striker to train for in Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205. We know the lightweight champion does hit with great power, so both McGregor’s defense and offense will need to be sound. At stake is promotional history both n the form of the first event in New York, but also in having their biggest star hold two belts at once. As for that ‘left field’ announcement Dana White recently teased, is a trip to the boxing ring what McGregor now has in mind?

Anticipation for the rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor is at an all-time high. UFC 202 is just eight days away, and the welterweight do-over is rich with back story. After replacing Rafael dos Anjos on short notice at UFC 196, Diaz submitted McGregor in the second round of a truly enthralling scrap. As the Stockton bad boy got on the mic for a classic interview, ‘The Notorious’ remained humble although clearly disappointed. Their story was far from over though.

It didn’t take long for McGregor to demand a rematch, once again at welterweight, and the promotion threw up no resistance. The featherweight title would have to wait, as the second fight 25 pounds above his championship category beckoned. With August 20 now within touching distance, the recent headlines have been dominated by the biggest draws in MMA today.

Revenge or Repeat?

Still the same questions are being asked as when the fight was first booked–How will McGregor overcome the factors that caused him to lose first time around? It’s an interesting ponder, but one the Irishman has addressed many times since the loss. Improved cardio, bigger and higher calibre sparring partners, and overall just a more organised approach to the fight. Will these alterations lead to revenge for McGregor?

Coach John Kavanagh seems to think so. As quoted by Talk Sport, McGregor’s long time coach at Straight Blast Gym Dublin reveals his fighter;s much more calculated approach and more:

Changes

“The word we’ve been focusing on for this camp is ‘routine’,” he said. “We basically did the same thing every day since we arrived in Vegas: Leave the house to go to the gym for a skill session at 1pm, before working on cardio in the evenings”.

“Anyone who knows about the history of [Kavanagh’s mixed martial arts gym] SBG Ireland will be aware that we were always regarded as the last-minute gym — the guys who would be ready to step in at short notice… All you can do in those circumstances is try to get your skill set to such a high level that the opponent doesn’t matter.

“I believe that worked well for us and the results were proof of that, but I also feel that when you’ve done that for so long, you can end up getting caught out against certain styles of opponent. This has provided us with an opportunity to experience the other method of extreme game planning and being very opponent-orientated.

“It’s been a new approach for me, and for us all. I’d describe it as doing an exam after seeing the questions on the teacher’s test sheet. I feel like we’re almost cheating going into this fight because we know what questions we’re going to face in the test”.

We know from past experience that a motivated Nate Diaz is the most dangerous possible. Of course ‘The Notorious’ is raring to go too, making this rematch so much more intriguing.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor returns to face Nate Diaz for the second time at UFC 202. The two have a storied rivalry that dates back to Diaz calling out McGregor following his dominant win over Michael Johnson. At that time ‘The Notorious’ was heavily rumoured to be moving up to face Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title, and the Stockton bad boy Diaz was not amused.

Eventually McGregor would be booked in to face dos Anjos, who at the time was on a killer streak, but the fight would never take place. Instead, in a strange twist of fate, Diaz would replace the injured Brazilian and March 5 was fast approaching by this point. Diaz had just 11 days notice to prepare for the biggest fight of his life; a fight to prove his worth, to reap the seeds he’d sewn for 10 years in the UFC, and to face the man he’d accused of ‘taking everything I worked for motherf*cker!’

Conor vs. Diaz

Their rivalry was so fierce in that small window of opportunity before the fight, and the bout itself was so entertaining that an immediate rematch was granted. Although McGregor had tapped out in a somewhat unquestionable loss, his sway with the promotion and the simple marketability of their beef made the booking a no-brainer. The time since has been filled with many questions regarding ‘The Notorious” ability to close the huge gap in grappling skill, and also to face the man with a much larger frame and reach.

This latest video from ‘The Mac Life’ shows the featherweight boss taking on a taller foe in sparring.

We also know that McGregor has been training with elite black belt BJJ star Dillon Danis recently. As far as Diaz is concerned, he tends to keep his training and sparring pretty much on the down low.
