UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor had a tough time at UFC 196. Facing Nate Diaz in a short notice welterweight battle, the Irishman who’d never been defeated during his promotional run came unstuck. He unloaded some very powerful strikes in the first round, hoping to dispatch Diaz in similar fashion to his previous opponents, but he Stockton bad boy’s chin held up. Heading in to the second round the tide began to turn.

Although bloodied and at that point outstruck, Diaz came out with fire in his heart and hands. Wobbling McGregor with a number of heavy counter strikes, it wasn’t long before the grappler’s prediction came true. Hurt from a stern left hand, ‘The Notorious’ shot in for a highly uncharacteristic takedown. It was easily stuffed by Diaz, and then began the real trouble for McGregor.

Taking full advantage of his massive grappling arsenal, Diaz first took the mount and rained down with punches, before McGregor bucked and gave up his back. Within a split second the arm was well under the chin and locked tight to the other bicep, and Diaz began cutting off the blood supply to the Irish star’s brain. Before napping, ‘The Notorious’ opted to tap and madness ensued from this point onward.

Part of the insanity that’s filled the aftermath of their first fight stemmed from the near-immediate booking of the rematch. McGregor had demanded a do-over at welterweight and the promotion obliged by giving the main event spot at UFC 200 as their date to dance once again. That was a very short lived booking.

As Diaz enjoyed his new found superstar status, McGregor began spiralling towards a fight he could not win, in the form of a standoff with the UFC. Briefly retiring from MMA with a sensational Tweet, then linking himself to a rather satirical boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, ‘The Notorious’ sparked huge debate as to his future in fighting, and his motivation to continue in the UFC. All this time the featherweight belt remained in keep, albeit in an undecided holding.

Of all the crazy trash talk and insane confrontations before UFC 196, Nate Diaz’s comments about Conor McGregor’s ‘unique’ training methods possibly stood out more than anything else. After ‘The Notorious’ had blasted the Stockton’s bad boy’s team mates as ‘cheaters’ following failed drug tests, also claiming he had weak sparring partners, Diaz responded with an all-time classic line that exploded across the web the moment the well timed set of vibrations crossed his gums.

“Who do you train with? You’ve got that little goofy motherfucker with you. I have real training partners,”

“Top 10 fighters, Top 10 boxers, Top 10 jiu-jitsu guys, Top 10 kickboxers. You’re playing touch-butt with that dork in the park with the pony tail. And I’m the one who don’t got no training partners? I don’t think so.”

Diaz was referring to Ido Portal with that hilarious retort, McGregor’s movement coach. Portal’s influence had seen the Irishman adopt a very flow-based reactionary style of footwork, something many believed helped him score the crushing first round knockout of Jose Aldo during his championship winning moment at UFC 194. Everyone was suddenly obsessed with movement coaches, and the work with Portal became a big point of focus in the media.

As Diaz would put it, that ‘touch-butt’ did not help McGregor when they met in the octagon at UFC 196. Fighting at 170 pounds for the first time, ‘The Notorious’ would empty the tank in round one before getting slapped and tapped in the second.

After criticism of his grappling skills at UFC 196, Conor McGregor has drafted in Jiu Jitsu ace Dillon Danis to SBG (Straight Blast Gym) Dublin…

Once they were booked in to rematch at UFC 202 on August 20, McGregor clearly began taking Diaz far more seriously. He’d brought in Dillon Danis to help with his BJJ and the Olympic boxing team of Ireland to work on is striking. But as you’ll see in these latest training videos, the featherweight champion has been reunited with his old friend Ido Portal for this fight camp.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor took a big hit at UFC 196 in many ways. Not only did he eat some heavy shots from Nate Diaz during their enthralling welterweight burner before being submitted, ‘The Notorious’ also had a five-year/14 fight unbeaten streak snapped and all against an opponent he was never even meant to face.

After Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of their lightweight title clash, McGregor was paired with Diaz on just 11 days notice.

The Irish star talked lot about learning lessons from his first loss under the UFC banner, and without doubt the gap between his and Diaz’s grappling skills would be way up there.

What was unexpected at UFC 196 was when McGregor actually shot for a takedown, effectively sealing his own fate in the second round. A black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Cesar Gracie, Diaz is widely regarded as one of the best grapplers in the sport. Of course the shot was probably more out of desperation than anything else, but it was never going to end any other way given his opponent’s BJJ credentials.

After the failed booking at UFC 200, McGregor and Diaz were once again paired for UFC 202. As August 20 fast approaches, many have raised the question of how the featherweight boss will deal with the Stockton native’s Jiu Jitsu game in the rematch. After all, Diaz’s skills won’t be decaying in any way, so the gap in skill will like stay the same, but arguably there are many ways in which McGregor could strengthen his defenses and knowledge base.

The past year has seen some serious changes in the landscape of the UFC’s most marketable stars. The promotion had poured money in to UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and former women’s bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey in an attempt to elevate their status and thus bring in solid pay-per-view numbers. It certainly worked as, up until her UFC 193 loss to Holly Holm, Rousey was without a doubt the biggest attraction in the UFC.

As it turned out for both ‘Rowdy’ and ‘The Notorious,’ the walls that had been built by their dominant performances in the octagon and brash antics in the media soon came tumbling down. For Rousey it was the harrowing knockout loss to Holm that sent her in to a spiral of depression and self doubt. She is yet to return to the octagon after her first pro defeat, recently electing for surgery and further postponing the potential UFC comeback.

McGregor’s stumble came in the form of a UFC 196 submission loss to Nate Diaz, one that would halt the promotion’s future plans for a superfight with Rafael dos Anjos or Robbie Lawler and also put the 145-pound title on hold. Opting to request an immediate rematch at UFC 200, at welterweight once again, it wouldn’t be long before the Irish star would go in to his own media meltdown, albeit far less serious than Rousey’s breakdown.

After pulling out of the UFC 200 presser in California, McGregor was taken off the card all together, and proceeded to go full blown ‘Notorious’ with a social media tirade that would last for weeks. Ill-founded rumours of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather would swirl before the announcement of McGregor’s rematch with Nate Diaz was announced at UFC 199.

One man who’s had front row seats for the highs and lows of both McGregor and Rousey is UFC color commentator Joe Rogan. Along with Conor McGregor’s loss to Nate Diaz, Rogan gives his opinion on the rematch at UFC 202 and points out where Rousey went wrong in the Holly Holm fight.

Boxing Legend Has Some Advice For Conor McGregor

Boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. recently commented on UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor’s loss to Nate Diaz, and his possible rematch with the man who handed him his first loss under the promotion’s banner.

“It’s a great rematch and I can’t wait to see it. You can’t move up in weight and underestimate this guy and think it’s easy. If it was easy, everybody would do it.

Jones also said that McGregor may have taken the Stockton native a little too lightly:

Going up in weight because you think you’re better than him doesn’t mean that you are. Sometimes you go up in weight and find out, ‘Whoa … no wonder this guy’s different!’

‘Superman’ also said that if McGregor can find a good boxing coach, now knowing what he’s up against in Diaz, the end result in a rematch could be different:

So now that he’s been in there he understands a little bit more about what he’s up against, so his chances are much better in phase two than they were in phase one. Be smart, find a good guy in his boxing coach, teach you how to deal with a boxer.”

UFC officials are likely targeting a rematch between the two trash-talking MMA stars, as UFC President Dana White and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta have had sit down meetings with both men in order to negotiate a deal.

No official bout has been made yet, however one is expected to be made sooner rather than later.

Its beginning to look more and more like a rematch between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz is what UFC brass is targeting.

After meeting with the featherweight champ earlier this week, UFC Presdient Dana White and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta flew to Stockton, California to meet up with the No. 5-Ranked lightweight. A fan posted an Instagram photo of the two sides conversing in the Stockton streets:

MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani then later confirmed the news on Twitter:

According to sources via TMZ the meeting between Diaz and White did not go well, as the two began lunch all smiles, however it ended with a visibly angry White storming out the restaurant and into his SUV.

White told this TMZ after the meeting:

“Obviously I’m not going to disclose details of the deal, but let’s just say my trip to Stockton didn’t go well.”

It is not yet known what set off White but it is highly likely the disagreement was money related, as Diaz would most likely want to match McGregor’s previously set $10M for their original rematch at UFC 200.

White and Fertitta recently finished up a dinner meeting with McGregor in a Beverly Hills hotel, where the two sides left looking very pleased, including McGregor who got into his $500k Rolls-Royce Phantom with a huge smile on his face.

It has not yet been announced just who McGregor will step into the Octagon against next, however an announcement is expected soon.
