During a recent episode of his “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan addressed the rumors regarding a potential boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor.

“I don’t think [McGregor can fight Mayweather]. I would imagine, unless the UFC is involved, [or they let him out of his contract] and I can’t imagine they would be willing to do that and I can’t imagine that they would let him fight Floyd Mayweather,” said Rogan.

Rogan would elaborate, explaining why anything is possible and reminding fans that money talks.

“If enough money gets thrown the UFC’s direction, the UFC might look at it this way, here’s a pragmatic way to look at it: ‘We can still make a lot of money with Conor McGregor. We can still make a lot of money with Conor McGregor in an MMA fight. We can still make a lot of money if Conor rematches Nate Diaz’ which I hear they’re trying to make happen as well, that’s what the rumor’s been. But is he gonna beat the best guys in the world now? After Nate Diaz boxed him up and choked him out, is that going to happen again? If that does happen again, how much will that deflate his value on the open market? If you’re playing a game of chess, not looking at it in terms of a guy’s career as an MMA fighter but looking at it as a game of financial chess, how do you move your piece?

“You might say, look the amount of money that you can make with the Mayweather fight is off the charts. Off the charts. You’re talking about a three million PPV buy or something crazy. So you do that, you move that up, you take that chance, and he gets boxed up by Mayweather and maybe he survives. If he survives and loses a fucking decision and he goes back and he says ‘All respect to Mayweather. Back to MMA. I just didn’t understand his hands. It’s a learning experience.’ and he has this great press conference. If he can survive, he’s not diminished too much. And Mayweather’s not a murderous puncher. He’s not a Canelo Alvarez or Gennady Golovkin. Golovkin is a bad fight for him. Someone like that is a bad fight for him, a murderous puncher, because most likely they’re gonna take him out. But Mayweather, it’s very possible he is gonna get to the decision.”

As far as the fight itself is concerned, while it’s doubtful it will happen, if it does, Rogan seems pretty confident in his pick.

“If Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather fight in MMA, Conor McGregor will f*ck him up. He will f*ck him up…But, in a boxing match, I can’t imagine a world where Floyd Mayweather doesn’t f*ck [McGregor] up. In a boxing match I think Floyd Mayweather is arguably the greatest boxer of all time…He’s just so much better. And if people don’t know, if you think you’re really good and then you get in there and box a guy like that, he will f*cking expose the sh*t out of you.

“But I mean, who knows man? One of the things we know about Conor is he has a ridiculous belief in himself and he has unbelievable power. One of the things we know about Floyd is he’s 39. So when a guy turns 39, you never know. For every guy like Bernard Hopkins, there’s a bunch of guys where the wheels just fall off and all of a sudden they can’t take a punch anymore and they can’t fight anymore, they don’t move good anymore. But I can’t imagine a world where he’s not light years past Conor with boxing skill. ”

Going up in weight is a risky business in the combat sports world, and seldom does it come with a degree of success. For that reason, those that achieve victories or championships particularly above their respective divisions are often revered in their trade. Some names  the MMA world that have seen belts in two classes include BJ Penn, Randy Couture and Dan Henderson. Multiple weight boxing champions are a little easier to come by, but it’s still a massive achievement nonetheless.

Modern boxers who dominated multiple divisions include Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, but looking back in time you’ve got legends such as Roberto Duran, Pernell Whitaker and Ray Leonard, Ray Robinson, Roy Jones Jr and many others who had won belts in up to seven divisions in some cases. Of course boxing is a different sport all together, and the junior/light/super divisions give an easier path to a new weight class for many boxers.

we

It’s interesting as you look at the weight classes on the left (boxing) and right (UFC, other promotions offer super heavy and also atomweight divsons). You begin to realise that in some case, such as lightweight to welterweight, or welterweight to middleweight, a mixed martial artist would have to jump up 15 pounds in weight. That’s two divisions worth of weight boxing, give or take a few grams.

One boxer who made a brave leap this past weekend was Amir Khan, taking on the feared middleweight punching machine Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in h Mexican’s preferred weight class. The result was a resounding and rather brutal KO finish for Canelo, who put away the natural welterweight with a stunning one punch sleeper in round six.

So where does UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor come in to this? Well, aside from the obvious fact he recently fought 25 pounds above his title division against Nate Diaz at UFC 196, ‘The Notorious’ pay-per-view salesman had a thing or two to say about the Canelo vs. Khan knockout.

You can watch the nasty finish and also see Conor McGregor’s reaction on the next page…

Conor McGregor’s team mate Gunnar Nelson returns as he takes on Albert Tumenov in Rotterdam tonight. Iceland’s Gunnar Nelson against the man nobody wants to fight at welterweight Albert Tumenov.

‘Einstein’ comes in to this bout with five straight wins, ‘Gunni’ needs to get a win back after losing a decision to Demian Maia in December last year. They touch gloves and we are underway.

They get in to the feeling out process, Nelson with a nice jab and a straight, Tumenov looking a little stiff as he kicks low. AT eats a huge left hook from Gunni, Nelsonmoving so well with that SBG style karate-ish stance. Tumenov lands a nice right hand though, body kick by Nelson and this fight is really going well now. Straight right from Nelson misses and now a head kick, but a body shot rips in from Tumenov and lands hard. Nice right hand to the chin by Tumenov but Nelson scores a massive takedown.

Nelson has full mount almost instantly, Tumenov in big trouble right now. Gunnar looking to posture up, Einstein needs to use his wits well here, brutal elbow from Nelson clatters Tumenov’s head off the canvas, he seems stuck here and unable to escape or even regain position. He finally bucks but ends up munching a nasty elbow again, one minute left and Gunni is trying to cut Tumenov’s face up big time. Another nasty elbow but Tumenov finally escapes and they stand. HUGE left hook by Tumenov and a side kick, great round, 10-9 Nelson easily.

Round two is a go, Tumenov has a nasty haematoma on the forehead from those elbows. Gunnar smelling blood but he needs to remain cautious. A raw body punch from Tumenov lands yet again, and a low kick now, Nelson counters well and switches stances. Jab by Gunnar but he looks a little slow now. Nelson with a takedown, maybe he was playing possum, and he’s landed in side control here. Looks to mount and he gets it, Tumenov in big trouble yet again. I’d be surprised if ‘Einstein’ survives this Nelson on the back of Tumenov now.

Body triangle is locked in and now Tumenov is eating punches to the face, choke locks in, this is overm Tumenov taps and that’s that.

Gunnar Nelson submits Albert Tumenov by rear naked choke submission round two.

By now everyone has heard the rumors regarding a potential boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, and “The Notorious” one seems to be well-aware of that fact.

McGregor took to social media this weekend to fuel the rumors, as he posted an unofficial fight poster for the rumored McGregor-Mayweather bout on Instagram.

It’s worth noting that despite online rumors, which stem from a report by The Sun out of the U.K., UFC President Dana White has stated that there is no truth to the McGregor-Mayweather boxing match rumors. MMAFighting.com reporter Ariel Helwani has also noted that there is nothing to the rumors.

Regardless, that doesn’t seem to be stopping McGregor, as he continues to use the rumors to his advantage. Below is the aforementioned fight poster that McGregor put up on Instagram on Saturday.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has finally addressed the wild rumors of a potential matchup with boxing legend Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. Rumors emerged this week that the UFC superstar could possibly step inside the boxing ring to challenge the recently retired Mayweather in a pivotal super fight.

Mayweather’s father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., addressed these rumors first, stating that his son spoke of possibly coming out of retirement to face ‘some MMA fighter’. Mayweather Jr. himself confirmed these rumors as well, stating a bout with McGregor is ‘possible’.

UFC President Dana White, however, is not a fan of these recent rumblings. When asked about the rumors, White stated that they were “completely fiction, this is like bottom-feeder … stuff.”.

One man we had yet to hear from was Mayweather’s rumored opponent, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Until now that is.

McGregor took to Twitter to add speculation to the rumors by posting the following:

While McGregor has not officially responded to these rumors, this picture can indicate ‘Notorious’ is aware of the rumors and will defiantly stir the pot if it means keeping his name in the headlines.

Mayweather (49-0, Boxing) is coming off of a unanimous decision win, in what was said to be his final bout inside the ring, to Andre Berto back in September.

McGregor (19-3, MMA) comes off a submission loss, his first under the UFC banner, to Stockton native Nate Diaz in early March.

While McGregor holds amateur experience from his youth in boxing, the Irishman certainly will be out of his element in a boxing match with a such a high-caliber defensive boxer as Mayweather.

No official confirmation has yet been made on the potential boxing bout.

Floyd Mayweather Sr. recently spoke with EsNews about the rumors regarding his son, legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. possibly competing in a boxing match against UFC mega-star and reigning 145-pound champion “The Notorious” Conor McGregor.

While UFC President Dana White quickly shot down the rumor, which first emanated from The Sun out of the U.K., Mayweather Sr. said he remembers his son telling him about possibly coming out of retirement to box “some kind of MMA fighter.”

“He had told me the other day that he’s going to take another fight,” said Mayweather Sr. in the interview, which you can watch above. “He told me it’s [going to be against] some kind of MMA fighter.”

Regarding the rumored boxing match, which appears to be nothing more than a wild, unfounded rumor, Mayweather Sr. obviously seemed confident in his sons chances against the Irish UFC star.

“We’d beat the hell out of that man,” said Mayweather Sr. “My son can whoop him. He’s dead.”
