Frankie Edgar Believes Interim Belt Is For The Real Title

The fighters for UFC 200 are going around the country doing media obligations to promote the big event in July. Earlier today, the UFC was in New York City and on Good Morning America, Dana White announced that Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones would headline the main event.

Further down the card is a quiet interim featherweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo. The fight is for the interim belt since McGregor was originally planned to fight Diaz but both have been pulled from the card entirely after Mystic Mac refused to do media obligations. Many have criticized the interim belt like Jon Jones, but Frankie Edgar is fine with fighting for the interim belt.

“It’s the number one contender belt, that’s what you call it,” Edgar said at the New York press conference.  “I have a feeling Conor may never come back down to 45, so interim will be for the real belt.”

So it seems that Frankie Edgar has the mentality that the belt he is fighting for in July will be for the real belt. White has speculated that McGregor would fight at UFC 201, 202, or even 203 but without a specific opponent in mind. It makes sense for the featherweight champ have to fight the winner of Edgar/Aldo but it isn’t sure if the McGregor/Diaz fight will be postponed entirely or if McGregor has a different opponent in mind.

Earlier today (Wed., April 27, 2016) the UFC confirmed that interim light heavyweight champion Jon Jones would take on arch rival champion Daniel Cormier in the main event of July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 during a MMA-themed segment of “Good Morning America.”

The booking of the impromptu main event, which was a necessity when Conor McGregor was unceremoniously removed from his rematch with Nate Diaz after refusing to make the promotional rounds, hardly came as a surprise, as it was leaked when a photo of the main event poster surfaced online.

While it’s no doubt a serviceable, if not spectacular, headlining bout for the stacked spectacular from Las Vegas’ all-new T-Mobile Arena, yet the awaited rematch, which has been predicted to take place ever since Jones outlasted Cormier by decision at UFC 182 last year, is far from guaranteed to happen.

After all, Jones just returned to defeat Ovince Saint Preux in a somewhat lackluster return bout at last weekend’s (April 23, 2016) UFC 197 following a yearlong battle with legal trouble, which he’s far from out of the woods with after violating his probation. That obviously adds a ton of uncertainty, and Cormier’s leg injury that forced him out of UFC 197 is another concern that has apparently been alleviated (at least for now).

Add that to the potential six-month medical suspension that Jones received for an injured foot in his win over Saint Preux (which the UFC is clearly banking he’ll be healed from by July), and you have a bout wrought with uncertainty with two-and-a-half months still ticking down.

What do you think? Will Jones vs. Cormier actually happen at UFC 200?

After the UFC pulled Conor McGregor from his scheduled UFC 200 headliner against Nate Diaz, the promotion was in search of a new main event for the blockbuster July 9, 2016 card from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The search is no more, however, as UFC President Dana White announced this morning (April 27, 2016) on Good Morning America that reigning light heavyweight champion Daniel “DC” Cormier would rematch former divisional kingpin Jon “Bones” Jones in the evening’s main attraction.

The two first met at January 2015’s UFC 182 with Jones soundly defeating Cormier, but “Bones” would soon run into a plethora of legal issues forcing the UFC to strip him of his title, and giving Cormier the chance to slide in and capture the vacant strap.

After nearly 16 months on the sidelines, Jones finally returned to action at this past weekend’s (April 23, 2016) UFC 197, scoring a unanimous decision victory over late replacement opponent Ovince St. Preux.

Cormier was supposed to meet Jones on the card, but he was forced to withdraw after suffering a leg injury in training.

After tuning into see a somewhat rusty Jones show up at UFC 197, Cormier recently took to his official Instagram to bash “Bones”, saying that the rematch will be ‘light work’:

While “DC”, a former Olympian, is undoubtedly a decorated fighter, he shouldn’t look too much into Jones’ most recent performance.

After spending so much time away from the sport, it’s understandable that the former champion may have needed some time to get back into the swing of things, and we’ve all seen how deadly Jones is when he’s at his best which he claims he will be when it’s time to meet Cormier.

Will “DC” finally be able to break “Bones”, or will Jones recapture his title on July 9th?

UFC legend Don Frye recently shared his thoughts on the ongoing drama surrounding Conor McGregor and the UFC.

During his appearance on “Submission Radio” this week, “The Predator” explained why McGregor is “spot on” in how he is handling the situation, while at the same time he predicts that UFC President Dana White is “throwing a fit.”

“I think he’s right. He’s spot on,” said Frye of how McGregor is handling himself. “I mean that takes so much goddamn time away from you. You’re hired to be a fighter not to be an interview, you know, or interviewee. You’ve got things to do. When you’re training for a fight it’s a 24/7 job, and if they got you doing more interviews and promoting than they do fighting, well then you’re not going to last long. You’re not going to have a long career.”

Frye continued, “How do I say this without being rude? I guess I can’t, so I’ll piss on it. You know, Dana likes everything his way and if he doesn’t get his way he throws a fit, and that’s what’s happening. You know, and Conor’s spot on, man. You can’t spend more time doing interviews than training.”

As Frye explains, while MMA has gone from a fight, to a sport, to a TV show, it’s still a dangerous competition, and one that should be taken seriously.

“This is a dangerous sport, okay? And the thing is, it went from a fight to a sport to a TV show. And it’s still a dangerous thing. And so you gotta prepare yourself for it, because shit, just training — if you’re in one of those fights and you’re not hurt, you don’t get hurt, it still takes two weeks to recover cause of all the hard training. But if you’re not training you’re going to get hurt.”

Donald Cerrone is set to fight Patrick Cote at the June 18, 2016 UFC Fight Night card in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, but he is also looking to fight at UFC 200.

It’s no secret that Cerrone does not like Conor McGregor because of the trash talks he brings to the fight game. Cerrone recently commented on McGregor not wanting to show up at the UFC 200 pre-fight press conference and being pulled from his fight with Nate Diaz at UFC 200.

“For ‘Mr. Press Conference’ not to want to do a press conference is insane,” Cerrone told MMA Junkie backstage MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. “They’re talking upwards of $8 (million), $9 million dollars he’s throwing away. I would literally ride a rocket ship to the moon for six months for $10 million to do a press conference.”

Cerrone then said that he would fight Diaz at the event.

“I’ll fight Diaz at 200, and I don’t need any more money,” Cerrone told reporters.

“Our job is to entertain,” Cerrone said. “That’s what we do; it’s part of the job. When you sign on the ‘X,’ I have to do all the media obligations for Ottawa (at UFC Fight Night 89). You think I want to? It’s just part of the job. It’s what we have to do.”

UFC 200 takes place at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 9, 2016. The main card will air on PPV while the prelims air on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

It’s possible that the UFC puts Cerrone against Diaz at the event, but the real question is, will Diaz accept the fight? Time will tell.
