Seven years ago Floyd Mayweather battered Conor McGregor

On this day seven years ago — former world champion boxing pugilist, Floyd Mayweather brought down the curtain on one of the most lucrative and impressive professional careers in combat sports — landing a tenth round knockout win over former UFC champion, Conor McGregor in the pair’s ‘super fight’ in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather, a decorated former multiple division and time world champion boxer, is gearing up for his return to the ring this weekend — albeit in an exhibition capacity, taking on New York native, John Gotti III in the pair’s rematch in Mexico City.

As for McGregor, the former undisputed UFC lightweight and featherweight champion has yet to make good on a return to combat sports since fracturing his tibia and fibula three years ago, however, has been heavily linked with an end-of-year return at UFC 310 in a showdown with Michael Chandler.

Besting the Dubliner in an eventual finish, Floyd Mayweather gave up the first couple of rounds on the scorecards against McGregor — who would make his professional boxing debut in his outing with the Grand Rapids striker in the high-profile pairing.

Turning up the pace on McGregor in the eighth round, Floyd Mayweather would almost force a finish in the ninth before forcing the ex-UFC champion back to his stool, and landing an eventual finish in the tenth frame — preventing the bout from seeing a scorecard in an emphatic win.

In the time since, both men have taken very different turns in their respective combat sports careers, however, have both been linked with a stunning future rematch — whether than comes in another professional boxing matchup, or another lucrative exhibition outing for Mayweather.

Former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor continues to scoop prizes despite his sidelined from mixed martial arts competition, with his public house in his native Dublin: The Black Forge Inn winning an award for the Best Food of the Year at the Bar of the Year awards in Ireland.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the organization, has been heavily linked with a return to action before the end of the year, namely on the final flagship event of the annum at UFC 310 in December — taking on Michael Chandler in a rescheduled pairing.

Sidelined for more than three years, McGregor, 36, most recently fractured his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 264.

And earlier this summer, Conor McGregor was forced to withdraw from a UFC 303 main event fight with Chandler during International Fight Week, after fracturing a toe in the weeks ahead of the bout.

However, as far as former title challenger turned analyst, Chael Sonnen is concerned, he doesn’t envision McGregor making a return this year, instead revealing talks are underway for him to compete in January.

“I’m hearing the organization would like him (Conor McGregor) to fight in California in January, I can’t confirm that for you but I would like to say this one thing Daniel (Cormier), as long-winded as I’m being,” Chael Sonnen said on Good Guy/Bad Guy. “I believe him. I believe that he wants to fight. I believe that he is going behind the scenes, see he loves to feint power — he loves to let people know it’s all my decision.”

And away from the action, McGregor revealed this week on social media how his public house in Dublin, The Black Forge Inn had scooped the Best Food of the Year award at the national Bar of the Year annual awards in his native country.

“YES!!!,” Conor McGregor posted on his Instagram account. “Our @theblackforgeinn has just won GOLD for best food at the @baroftheyear__ awards! I am so beyond incredibly proud of our culinary team and the entire team who are all instrumental in making this dream win a reality for us! Thank you all and enjoy the celebrations and thank you so much our loyal patrons who visit from all over the world to see what we are about! We love you all! THE BLACK FORGE FOREVER!”

As far as former UFC star, Chael Sonnen is concerned, former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor may be serious regarding his impending return to action, however, is falsely portraying that he pulling the strings when he returns — rather than promotional brass.

McGregor, a former undisputed featherweight champion and lightweight gold holder, was slated to headline UFC 303 in a three-year-plus hiatus snapping return to the Octagon back in June, taking on Michael Chandler in a return to the welterweight limit for the Dublin striker.

Out of action since UFC 264, Conor McGregor most recently took on common-foe, Dustin Poirier in Las Vegas, Nevada — fracturing his left tibia and fibula in an opening round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss as the duo shared the Octagon in a trilogy rubber match.

And forced from a welterweight fight with Chandler earlier this summer due to injury, McGregor fractured a toe on the same foot as his prior leg injury — ruling him out from a comeback.

Chael Sonnen claims Conor McGregor may not fight this year

Targeting a potential December return to action in the main event of UFC 310, McGregor may not get his way according to Sonnen, who says a potential return in January at a pay-per-view event in California may be on the cards as well.

“I believe he has humbled himself to say, ‘I need the organization to sign off on this, I’m willing to go,’” Chael Sonnen explained. “And that’s not quite how the story is being told. The story being told that Conor is dangling this, I don’t think so and if you remember all the efforts that he went through just to get on the docket on June 29., he’s doing the same things to get on the docket in December. At a minimum, I do believe he is sincere that he still wants to be on the boys.”

On This Day: Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 2 - One of the Greatest Fights of All Time - August 20, 2016

On this day in 2016, Conor McGregor met Nate Diaz in one of the most-watched rematches in UFC pay-per-view history.

McGregor and Diaz first met five months earlier in the UFC 196 headliner. Despite coming in on short notice to replace an injured Rafael dos Anjos, the ‘Stockton Samurai’ shocked the world with a second-round submission victory over the Irish megastar.

It was the first loss of McGregor’s career inside the Octagon.

Five months later, they would run it back at T-Mobile Arena in what would become one of the UFC’s biggest events of all time. This time around McGregor would come out on top, scoring a majority decision via two 48-47 scorecards while a third judge ruled the fight a 47-47 draw.

With 1.65 million buys, UFC 202 was the most-bought PPV card in UFC history, up to that point. Two years later, ‘Mystic Mac’ broke the record once again with his UFC 229 clash against Khabib Nurmagomedov — the first and only UFC pay-per-view to eclipse two million buys.

As it stands, his sequel with Diaz is still the third-highest-grossing PPV of all time, sitting only behind UFC 229 and McGregor’s trilogy bout with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.

Despite taking separate career paths, Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz remain adamant that their trilogy fight will happen

With the series deadlocked at 1-1, everyone expected a trilogy fight between Diaz and the then-featherweight champion to be booked in short order. Eight years later, we’re still waiting.

Following their duology, McGregor and Diaz went down separate paths. McGregor’s next fight saw him score a third-round TKO against Eddie Alvarez to claim the lightweight championship, making him the promotion’s first-ever simultaneous two-division titleholder.

As for Diaz, the Stockton, CA native only fought four more times under the UFC banner, going 2-2 including wins over Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis and Tony Ferguson. Diaz exited the UFC in September 2022 with plans to pursue a career in boxing. Since then, he’s stepped inside the squared circle twice, dropping a unanimous decision to Jake Paul before landing a majority decision against BMF rival Jorge Masvidal a year later.

Despite no longer being signed by the UFC, Nate Diaz is confident that he and Conor McGregor will close out their trilogy at some point.

“I 100% guarantee I’m going to fight Conor McGregor again,” Diaz said at a media event to promote his boxing match with Jorge Masvidal.

McGregor has also remained adamant that the threequel will happen, telling Ariel Helwani in an in-studio interview last year, “I’ll get that again. That trilogy will happen at some stage, for sure.”

Fresh from his impressive decision win over perennial contender, Mateusz Gamrot over the course of last weekend on the main card of UFC 305, newly-minted number five ranked challenger, Dan Hooker wants to steal a fight with former two-weight best, Conor McGregor next – just to spite Michael Chandler.

Hooker, now in the midst of an impressive three-fight winning run, turned in a close, split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) victory over Polish contender, Gamrot over the course of three rounds in Perth over the course of last weekend.

Dan Hooker sounds out potential “snake” fight with Conor McGregor

And weighing up a slew of fights next – including a title-eliminator against the surging, Arman Tsarukyan next, Dan Hooker has suggested he slide into a mega fight with former two-division best, McGregor – just to stick it to former foe, Chandler.

“I didn’t necessarily call him (Conor McGregor) out, I just said that because I am an absolute troll, so it’s like the biggest troll move you could do of all-time, is to snake that fight off (Michael) Chandler,” Dan Hooker told The Mac Life. “Like, he waits all that time and then Conor just fights me anyway, like, that would be gold. Like, I would feel like the biggest snake troll of all time. I’ll get my black belt in the troll Olympics.”

Fighting former three-time Bellator MMA lightweight kingpin, Chandler in the Missouri native’s Octagon debut back in 2021, Hooker dropped a spectacular opening round knockout loss to the veteran during their title-eliminator clash on ‘Fight Island’.

The road to see Conor McGregor back inside the Octagon has been unlike anything else that the UFC has seen before.

In recent years where his comeback has been regularly spoken about, there has been blame placed on both McGregor and the UFC’s side.

Though his professionalism has been called into question during the time since he last fought, “The Notorious” has always been passionate about martial arts and competition despite everything that he has already achieved.

His 2024 return is seemingly off the table following the recent comments from Dana White that seemed to shut down any chance of the Irishman’s headlining the final numbered event of the year in December.

Chael Sonnen Says That He Believes Conor McGregor And Thinks He’s Pushing Hard For The Return

From the outside looking in, it seems that McGregor has tried very hard over the past 12 or so months to book his return after repeatedly stating that he was ready to fight.

Though the decision to withdraw from the UFC 303 main event against Michael Chandler was his to make, the former UFC champ-champ did seem set on rescheduling the fight for later on in the year.

Chael Sonnen said that he believes McGregor when it comes to trying to make this fight happen, on a recent episode of Good Guy / Bad Guy on ESPN MMA.

“The Bad Guy” said that he doesn’t think the impression of what is happening behind the scenes is a true reflection of reality, making the case for why he believes “The Mac” is doing what he can to make this fight a reality.

“I’m hearing the organization would like him to fight in California in January, I can’t confirm that for you but I would like to say this one thing Daniel, as long winded as I’m being. I think the story of Conor is being a little bit mistold in this way. I believe him. I believe that he wants to fight. I believe that he is going behind the scenes, see he loves to feint power, he loves to let people know it’s all my decision.

“I believe he has humbled himself to say, ‘I need the organization to sign off on this, I’m willing to go,’ and that’s not quite how the story is being told. The story is being told that Conor is dangling this, I don’t think so and if you remember all the efforts that he went through just to get on the docket on June 29, he’s doing the same things to get on the docket in December. At a minimum, I do believe he is sincere that he still wants to be one of the boys.”
