Islam Makhachev loves watching Dustin Poirier knock out Conor McGregor

Whilst he’s currently nursing an arm injury, undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev could not help himself but poke fun at arch-rival, Conor McGregor – explaining how he loves to watch the Dubliner in his 2021 knockout loss to common-opponent, Dustin Poirier.

Makhachev, the current lightweight champion and pound-for-pound number one ranked fighter, most recently headlined UFC 302 back in May, landing a fifth round D’Arce choke submission win over the above-mentioned, Poirier to successfully defend his title for a third time consecutively.

As for McGregor, the former two-weight champion has yet to return to action since he fractured his left tibia and fibula in a doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Poirier three years ago.

Booked to headline UFC 303 at the end of June, McGregor withdrew from a scheduled fight with Michael Chandler – citing a fractured toe on his left foot ahead of his hiatus-snapping comeback fight.

Islam Makhachev mocks Conor McGregor ‘s 2021 knockout loss

And mocking the Dubliner’s sidelining from action – Makhachev posted footage of McGregor suffering his first knockout loss in mixed martial arts over three years ago in his rematch fight with Poirier in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Sharing a distinct rivalry with the Dubliner, Islam Makhachev has been tipped as a potential future opponent to the ex-two-weight champion by his own coach, Javier Mendez earlier this year to boot.

“Conor (McGregor) starts and goes on a rank, starting to create drama with Islam (Makhachev),” Javier Mendez said. “Which is kind of good because Conor’s the kind of guy you want to root against or root for. Regardless, everybody wants to see him, Me, I want to see him get beat by Islam.”

“So, for me, him doing what he’s doing is causing a lot of attention so there wouldn’t be nothing better for me and Khabib (Nurmagomedov) than to have Islam have a fight with him somewhere down the line,” Mendez explained. “He brought that staph [infection] up, which is very observant on his part, to be honest with you. The only thing is that he observed it way too late. At the time he mentioned it, it was already three weeks past.”

Conor McGregor hasn’t fought in the UFC for over three years but he still makes the headlines easily. Most recently, the former UFC double champ visited Sturgis with several of his fan interactions going viral.

McGregor is expected to return to the Octagon before the end of 2024. He seems to have recovered well from his toe injury, relieving many fans eagerly waiting for the Michael Chandler fight.

“The Notorious” took the internet by storm attending a motorcycle rally in Sturgis and here’s everything to know about the incident…

Where Is The Viral Conor McGregor Sturgis Clip From?

McGregor was in Sturgis for the BKFC 63 event and his viral party clip is from the famous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally which began on August 2 and ends on August 11. He was seen clicking pictures and talking to other riders.

In the viral clip, “The Mystic Mac” seemingly ignored a fan dancing in front of him.

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally boasts a massive footfall and many believe holding the BKFC event alongside it to be a wise move. The card was headlined by Britain Hart vs. Taylor Starling for the promotion’s strawweight championship. “The Notorious” hyped up the crowd with his entrance and was ringside for Sam Shewmaker vs. Josh Burns as well.

Another memorable moment was when the Irishman chugged a beer while exiting the BKFC stage, compelling fans to speculate whether he’s taking his UFC return seriously.

Interestingly, UFC President Dana White has attended the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally too. Back in 2017, he, Matt Serra, and Din Thomas searched South Dakota’s local fight promotion for talent and ended up signing Jared Gordon. The lightweight debuted that year and recently gained prominence for giving Paddy Pimblett his toughest fight in the UFC.

While at Sturgis, McGregor didn’t talk about his next UFC fight. Regardless, his Stone Cold Steve Austin-esque outfit and energy kept were enough to make him the talk of the town.

Herb Dean Reflects on Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor Post Fight Brawl: 'Plenty of Targets'

Veteran referee, Herb Dean has reflected on his part in the post-fight brawl between the camps of both Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor – explaining that while he, security personnel, and other officials tried to coral the teams, there were still “plenty of targets” of attack.

Sharing the Octagon in a brutal grudge fight back in 2018, then-undisputed lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov managed to defend his title for the first time during his reign – taking on former two-weight champion, McGregor.

Taking on the Dubliner in the main event of UFC 229, Nurmagomedov landed a fourth round neck crank submission win over McGregor – handing the former champion his first defeat at 155lb, before beginning a brutal brawl with the former’s corner, including former Bellator MMA star, Dillon Danis.

Separated from McGregor by referee, Dean after appeared to spit in the direction of his bitter rival following his submission success, Nurmagomedov’s team scaled the Octagon in pursuit of the Dublin striker, with officials storming the cage in a bid to separate and stop the mass brawl.

Reflecting on his part in stopping the influx of fights in the Octagon, veteran official, Dean admitted that while he and others managed to corral combatants, everyone inside the venue was a “target” during the fiasco.

“The funny part about that [the brawl] is even though that whole brawl was chaos,” Herb Dean said. “All those guys were extra respectful of the officials. So, I pull him (Khabib Nurmagomedov) off [of Conor McGregor] right? And then he’s still going after him, talking to him, and I’m like pushing against him. And he’s like, ‘Okay, well… I’m not gonna wrestle Herb, but I’ve got other people I’ve gotten – you.’”

“…They’re not listening, but nobody was threatening the referee or one of the inspectors,” Herb Dean explained. “You’re grabbing the guys – once you grab them they’re like, ‘Oh, okay.’ But if you don’t get them they’re like, ‘There’s plenty of targets.’”

Daniel Cormier on Conor McGregor Making Peace with Khabib Nurmagomedov: ‘He Hates Him’

Will we ever see Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov bury the hatchet?

No, probably not.

Despite only meeting once inside the Octagon, McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov is without a doubt the most intense rivalry in UFC history. Six years after their history-making encounter at UFC 229 — the only pay-per-view to eclipse two million buys in promotional history — their feud rages on with the Irish megastar often taking digs at ‘The Eagle’ on social media and in interviews.

Conor McGregor and Khabib

Recently, McGregor went off on both Nurmagomedov and former U.S. president Donald Trump after ’45’ dubbed the Dagestani his favorite UFC fighter of all time.

While Trump got off relatively light with McGregor calling his remarks a “campaign-ending decision,” Nurmagomedov took the brunt of the backlash as ‘Mystic Mac’ labeled him a “smelly fat mountain monkey from the inbred mountains of Dagestan.”

Conor McGregor

Could Conor McGregor find peace in fighting Nurmagomedov’s protege?

Daniel Cormier, who is close friends with Nurmagomedov, offered his take on the constant quarreling between the two former champions and the possibility of ever seeing them squash their beef.

“He just hates Khabib. He hates him… They are not letting it go,” Cormier told Ben Askren during a recent episode of their Funky & The Champ podcast. “It’s deep-rooted, but it’s deep-rooted on both sides, honestly… [Khabib] doesn’t like this guy, bro. They don’t like each other. This is crazy. It really is. It’s deep. It’s very deep, but I think the closest thing you would get to a resolution in that is, again, Conor beating [Michael Chandler] and then earning a championship fight against Islam Makhachev, right?

“Then Khabib could probably try to find some comfort in that and Conor could try to actually find redemption in trying to beat the guy that became the guy, right? So, there’s stories there. I don’t know that it happens because Michael Chandler can’t seem to get a date” (h/t Sportskeeda).

The idea of Conor McGregor challenging current lightweight champion Islam Makhachev may seem far-fetched at this point, but considering the Irishman’s immense drawing power and the pre-written history between McGregor and Eagles MMA, we could see Dana White putting that fight together in a bid to break UFC 229’s record as the most-viewed event in the promotion’s 30+ years.

Of course, that all rides on McGregor getting past Michael Chandler when (or if) they fight.

Conor McGregor Applauds Kellie Harrington’s Historic Win: ‘Two-Time Olympic Champion’

Conor McGregor showed some love to two-time Olympic champion Kellie Harrington following her gold medal-winning performance in the women’s 60kg boxing division.

Harrington, who hails from McGregor’s native Ireland and brought home the gold three years ago in Tokyo, delivered a dominant showing against China’s Yang Wenlu, securing a 4-1 victory at Roland Garros to become the first Irish woman to win gold medals at two Olympics. She is just one of four Irish athletes to retain an Olympic title.

Her accomplishment scored some recognition from McGregor, who offered congratulations to Harrington while enjoying the festivities at home alongside his youngest son, Mack McGregor.

“Two time Olympic Champion, Ireland’s Kellie Harrington!” McGregor wrote on X. “FANTASTIC! HISTORY!”

Minutes after she stepped onto the podium to receive her gold medal, Harrington announced to the world that she was retiring from the sport while on top.

“I’m done and dusted,” Harrington said. “I’m going to go out a champion. That’s the way I want to go out. I don’t want to go out and lose a fight and then retire. I’ll retire happy.”

Conor McGregor Targets December Return after Bowing out of June Comeback

As for Conor McGregor, the two-division titleholder is still working toward his long-awaited return to the Octagon. That moment was supposed to come at UFC 303 in June, but ‘Mystic Mac’ ultimately bowed out of his scheduled headliner with Michael Chandler after breaking his pinky toe while training.

Rumors suggest that their bout will be rebooked for UFC 310 in December, though Dana White has continued to play coy when asked, and Chandler has seemingly thrown in the towel on ever seeing their scrap come to fruition.
