Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has well and truly been through the mill in the last ten months. Her first professional loss against Holly Holm at UFC 193 was a tough pill to swallow for ‘Rowdy.’ Fans hoping for a near-future return for the former undisputed queen may be waiting a while, as Hollywood movie roles beckon. This scenario is a complete opposite to what we saw in the years leading up to her devastating knockout loss last November.

The MMA world, for a time, could not get enough of Ronda Rousey. Her ever-swelling confidence and sub-minute finishes had the mainstream salivating for more, as awards and accolades flooded in with each dominant win. Front covers of Ring Magazine and ESPN showed how big ‘Rowdy’ had become, but in the midst of this media frenzy was the underlying thought of an almost imminent loss. When it finally came to be, that single ‘head kick heard around the world’ held more power than any of us had first realised.

Where had the boisterous ruler of the female bantamweights gone? In her absence was a toned down, reportedly depressed Rousey. She even revealed that times got so hard immediately after UFC 193 she’d considered suicide. The thought of ‘having Travis Browne’s babies’ was the only thing that kept her going.

From the untouchable ruler of the 135-pound division, nemesis of Cris Cyborg, to the much more human version of Ronda Rousey seen during and after UFC 193, it’s been quite the transformation. Once calling non stop for a fight with ‘Rowdy,’ her Brazilian rival Cristiane Justino made some very interesting comments about the former champ via Twitter:

13654383_10154095196518145_6332889701014563855_n[1]

A well disguised troll? Quite possibly, or maybe Cyborg does simply wish her rival the best. On top of the brutal loss and the time in the Hollywood limelight, could being pregnant prove the last step towards Ronda Rousey officially retiring?

There’ll no doubt be a ton of fights waiting for her if Rousey does decide to come back, and if this is a troll by Cris Cyborg, then the rivalry is clearly far from over.

Invicta FC featherweiht champion, former Strikeforce 145-pound queen and recent UFC debutante Cris Cyborg Justino is truly a force to be reckoned with. Her smash-and-grab debut under the UFC banner was a sub-round destruction of Leslie Smith that left fans salivating over the prospect of a Cyborg UFC title run. The time since UFC 198 has involved talk of a very different kind though, mainly focused once again on the issue of weight. She’d battered Smith on May 14 at UFC 198 in a 140-pound catchweight contest, and had a very draining cut to make it that far.

The fact there’s no women’s featherweight division in the UFC has led to a number of intriguing rants by the Brazilian knockout artist lately. Much like the good old days of Ronda Rousey’s title reign, Cris Cyborg has again been firing shots at ‘Rowdy’ over social media. Recently demanding her own division in the UFC, Justino laid down the gauntlet for Rousey to fight her at UFC 205 in New York.

In the absence of any kind of response from the former 135-pound champion, Cris Cyborg has apparently been looking elsewhere. We know she likes to experiment, as was apparent from her three-fight Muay Thai career and Jiu Jitsu competitions circa 2009, but now it looks a though professional boxing is an area of interest for the Invicta champ. As reported by Nettavisen.no, and loosely translated by yours truly and google, Cyborg has been enquiring about a boxing match against 28-0 welterweight champion Cecilia Brækhus:

MMA athlete Cristiane Santos, better known as Cris Cyborg, has contacted Cecilia Brækhus and mooted the idea of a duel between the two in the boxing ring.

“There have been rumors that she would like to go over to boxing for a while, for no one would meet her in the UFC. I also think she is looking to top his career with a big fight that will create tremendous attention throughout the world, a fight between her and me would,”

“It seems that I have a mandatory fight against the winner of (Mikaela) Lauren and (Klara) Svensson, so a fight against Cyborg is the earliest in 2017. But it fit enough good for her, too, because then she can train boxing,”

“It will be gigantic, both in Europe and the United States. Both boxing and MMA audiences will follow.”

So perhaps a trip to professional boxing is on the cards fr Cristiane Justino while the UFC ponders her request fr a 145-pound division. If they drag their feet like they did the whole time trying to sign her to the promotion, Cyborg may well have the time for as many boxing and Invicta title fights as she can stomach.

Cecilia Brækhus is also a former kickboxing world champion and amateur boxing European champion, currently holding the IBO, WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO welterweight championships. She most recently dominated Chris Namus to extend her tally to 28-0 in February.

After a long-standing feud with former bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey was unable to come to fruition, Cyborg instead faced Leslie Smith at UFC 198. The fight took place at 140 pounds, and needless to say Justino looked withered during her brutal weight cut.

She’s been calling for a women’s featherweight division in the UFC for a long time, but is yet to get any sort of response. After burying Smith with a first round knockout in her promotional debut, it looks as though now’s as good a time as any to start appealing again. With the women’s bantamweight title changing hands again at UFC 200, Cyborg wants to add yet another interesting twist to women’s MMA in the UFC.

She posted this message to her Facebook page:
13754626_10153657690511892_710955551937650880_n[1]

Every UFC Banatamweight in the history of the female division has fought at 145lbs. Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm, and Amanda Nunes.

None of these girls have ever fought lighter than 135lbs.

Currently there is not 1 girl in the bantamweight division’s top 10 to have fought their entire career at 135 and Half of the girls ranked in the Bantamweight Top 10 are on a losing streak.

I am the only MMA World Champion to have ever successfully went down in weight to compete in a Superfight while still holding the world title.I deserve my own division.

These girls didn’t want to fight me in my weight class and now fans want me to face them for no belt, or risk my health to chase theirs…this is not fair.

I’ve earned the right to fight in my division and women deserve an equal opportunity to compete. #1 P4P female fighter in MMA according to ESPN.

Whatever you do don’t miss my next fight…I am going to show the world why these girls left the division…media guys there is your story for the slow news week.
She certainly makes some very interesting points.

Ronda Rousey monumental loss and the changing of the title since then has left the division more open than it’s ever been. Will any of the women’s bantamweights fancy a jump up in weight at this stage? If any do, there’ll be a hungry Cyborg waiting there for them.

Belator 158 transpired this past Saturday July 16 in London, England, and had a lot of eyeballs watching during an otherwise quiet weekend in combat sports. With some great homegrown talent on the card, including UFC veteran Paul Daley and upcoming star Michael ‘Venom’ Page, the O2 Arena was packed to the gills with fans. Also present were MMA legends Fedor Emelianenko, Royce Gracie, Tito Ortiz and boxing great Lennox Lewis.

Many, including the high-profile names, were eagerly anticipating some top-level MMA. They got it in doses, but the big story of the night came from ‘Venom’ during his knockout victory over Evangelista ‘Cyborg’ Santos.

But the story of this crazy knockout didn’t end in the Bellator cage, and took a serious turn when it was reported ‘Cyborg’ had been hospitalized with a fractured skull.Fans and fellow fighters such as ex-partner Cris Cyborg and Nate Diaz reached out to the fallen Santos with donations to his Gofundme page (currently at $17,000). Concern grew as the following image circled the web:

Bellator MMA officials later confirmed they’d foot any medical bills incurred by Santos, but he was by no means out of the woods yet. The Brazilian banger had suffered a serious skull fracture and would require surgery. Always the gentleman, Michael Page sent out the following Tweet asking for donations towards Cyborg’s fund, and also revealed just one hour ago that Evangelista had now been released from hospital in good condition.

As much as it can be, this update is a happy ending to a somewhat grizzly injury for Santos. Other notable fighters that contributed to Cyborg’s cause include Aljamain Sterling, Chael Sonnen and of course ‘Venom’ himself.

We here at LowKickMMA wish Cyborg a speedy and successful recovery, and tip our hats to Page for being a gent.

Cris “Cyborg” Justino remains the Invicta FC featherweight champion, which is a division that the UFC does not recognize at this point.

After making her Octagon debut, though, in a catch-weight fight earlier this year, many have wondered if we will see the Brazilian in the UFC or Invicta FC next.

Well, Justino provided some possible insight with a post on Twitter late Wednesday night, stating that on “this day 3 years (ago) I won the Invicta FC world title. I (cannot) say anything yet, but I have some exciting news…”
