UFC featherweight Damon Jackson was taken aback by Cub Swanson’s trash talk while he was coaching Dan Argueta at UFC Vegas 56.

Jackson earned a unanimous decision win over Argueta on the UFC Vegas 56 prelims. He used solid grappling and late-round toughness on the feet to secure the win on the scorecards.

But Jackson’s win over Argueta wasn’t without drama. Swanson could be heard on the UFC broadcast trash-talking Jackson and his team throughout the fight instead of encouraging Argueta to improve positions.

During an exclusive interview with MMA News, Jackson gave insight into what was said between Swanson and his corner in the middle of his battle with Argueta.

“It was more confusing,” Jackson admitted. “So you got this kid talking to my coach, saying stuff to my coach…. and then you have Cub over there talking to me. I’m like, why don’t you just coach your fighter? Why don’t you just shut up coach your prodigy or whoever this kid is to you? I don’t know what he is to Cub. I know he’s been training with Cub for a while, and that’s why I knew he was going to be prepared for the fight.

“But I was like instead of talking to me and talking to my coach, why don’t you actually be a coach and talk to your player or whatever. You’re sitting over there running your mouth to me because you don’t want to say, you don’t know what to do. Because if I put him on his back, he would do the same thing, he wouldn’t know what to do. He’s running his mouth and I told him after the fight: ‘hey man, we’re in the same weight class. If you wanna run it up, let’s go.’… If Cub wants to go, I’m down. Let’s go.

“If he wants to talk smack and do all this Cali BS with his tattoos and all his gangster stuff, if he wants to do that stuff… let’s go, we can run it,” Jackson continued. “I’m not gonna talk smack to anyone and I’m ready to fight. I wanna stay consistent and break into that Top 15.”

Jackson is now on a three-fight winning streak since a loss to Ilia Topuria in Dec. 2020. He’s earned wins over the likes of Mirsad Bektic, Charles Rosa, and Kamuela Kirk during his UFC tenure.

Swanson last fought against Darren Elkins last December via first-round knockout. Before that, he had lost to top featherweight contenders such as Renato Moicano and Giga Chikadze.

Jackson wants to return for the UFC 277 card in his native Dallas, TX in July, and a matchup with Swanson could be in the works.

Damon Jackson, Ilia Topuria, Paddy Pimblett

UFC featherweight Damon Jackson believes Ilia Topuria to be a rising superstar and has backed him to win over Paddy Pimblett.

Having had multiple canceled bouts and replaced opponents, ‘The Leech’ shared his thoughts on the shift in the mindset of competitors nowadays. Jackson is currently on a two-fight win streak with a prior loss to Ilia Topuria in 2020. The 33-year-old spoke about how well-rounded Topuria is and how he was caught in the first round to get knocked out.

In an exclusive interview with LowKick MMA, Damon Jackson talked about his upcoming fight against Darrick Minner at UFC Fight Night 207. He was asked about a potential matchup between Topuria and another one of the hottest prospects in the game, Paddy Pimblett. As someone who’s faced ‘El Matador’ Jackson attested to his abilities and favors him to win over Pimblett.

“Ilia 100 percent. Paddy is kinda trash, honestly,” Jackson said. “I think that they’re going to have to feed him some nobodies for him to keep building his name up. I think he’s entertaining because of his personality but his skill level is not impressive. It is jiu-jitsu, it’s probably the best thing he has going for him and then his just mindset. His attitude of like, ‘f**k you, I’m going to fight’ and that’s great.”

Jackson made it clear he wishes Pimblett the best and hopes he gets better with time.

“I hope it goes good for him and I hope he gets better. I hope he really sees that early without having to take those big losses because it’s not easy to tell yourself that you’re not that good, this part. So you gotta really work. Hopefully, he zones in and gets better over this time.”

Damon Jackson doesn’t believe UFC will make that fight

As fun as it is to discuss potential fights, Pimblett vs. Topuria is one that we may likely never see play out in real life. Damon Jackson does not believe the UFC will risk losing out on one of their bigger names just yet. He compared Pimblett’s journey in the promotion to that of Sean O’Malley who’s become infamous for fighting lower-ranked opponents.

“He does not need to fight Ilia. I don’t think the UFC will make that fight happen. I think that they want to build Ilia up but they don’t want to build Ilia up on beating him because he could be a big name. Paddy could be such a big name and they definitely don’t want to ruin that this early.

He reckons the UFC will give Pimblett the ‘Sean O’Malley treatment’.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Paddy gets fed like one or two more guys and then they might test him. They’re kinda doing that with Sean O’Malley, you know, where he just now got a top ten. I wouldn’t be surprised if they treat him the same way.”

Jackson will be looking to extend his win streak to three when he takes on Minner this June 4 at UFC Fight Night 207.

In the words of UFC play-by-play commentator, Jon Anik, the clean-up crew have a busy night ahead following our preliminary featherweight bout between Charles Rosa, and eventual victor Damon Jackson.

Battling over the course of a three round preliminary card bout, Jackson emerged with a (29-26, 29-27, 30-27) unanimous decision win over Rosa, having lost what looks to be litres of blood after he was sliced with a massive spinning back elbow.

Dealing with a massive laceration to the right of his right eye, Jackson was consulted by the Octagon-side physician, who gave him the go ahead to continue despite the sizeable cut.

Returning to the position at the fence prior to the stoppage in action, Jackson somehow managed to remain composed as himself and Rosa scrambled for the final minute or so, with blood continuing to leak from him like a tap.

Below, catch the highlights from Jackson’s unanimous decision victory over fellow grappler, Rosa.

The Georgian MMA takeover continues tonight at UFC Vegas 16 in ‘Sin City’. Featuring on the preliminary portion of the card, Ilia Topuria improved to 10-0 professionally, and 2-0 under the promotion’s banner via a massive overhand right knockout win over Damon Jackson in the opening frame.

The former Brave CF competitor made his Octagon splash in October at UFC Fight Island 5 — taking home a unanimous decision victory over fellow highly-touted prospect Youssef Zalal.

Utilising his boxing early and often opposed to his dangerous grappling, Topuria notably ripped the body on cue in the run up to the finish. Hurting Jackson with a perfectly placed body shot, Topuria backed the former up against the fence, before uncorking a massive overhand right hand, slumping Jackson before the three-minute mark of the first-round.

Below, check out the highlights from Topuria’s second Octagon victory and his devasatating knockout of Jackson.
