Dan Lambert has given his take on Colby Covington’s controversial comment on the death of Glenn Robinson. Robinson founded the Blackzilians and was UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman’s manager. Robinson passed away last year. Covington appeared on Submission Radio earlier this year and said the following. ”I mean, he [Usman] was ducking me so long […]

American Top Team (ATT) owner Dan Lambert is expecting an interesting clash when Kamaru Usman defends his welterweight title against Colby Covington.
After more than a year’s worth of trash talk, the pair will finally collide in the main event of UFC 245 which takes place December 14 in Las Vegas. The stylistic matchup notably intrigues many in the combat sport world, especially given how both Usman and Covington have similar styles.
Who will impose their game first? Nobody knows. And that is one reason why Lambert is anticipating the welterweight title showdown:
“I think Usman is a great fighter. The guy’s not the champion for no reason,” Lambert told Lowkick MMA. “He brings a lot to the table, he’s got a certain style that can give a lot of people a lot of trouble. It’s going to be an interesting fight.
“You’ve got two guys who have pretty much dominated every minute of every round of every fight that they’ve ever been in since they’ve been in the UFC, it’s going to be interesting to see how one of those guys holds up when he starts getting on the other end of it and being on the wrong side of the fight.”
Covington’s EPO claims
Stylistic matchup aside, the trash talking and animosity between Usman and Covington is another reason why many are excited by the matchup. Covington, in particular, is no stranger to crossing the line.
At the pre-UFC 245 press conference earlier this month, he notably accused Usman of being on EPO. Whether there’s any truth to that or if he’s just trying to get into Usman’s head, Lambert has no particular knowledge about the matter:
“I have no knowledge of it myself,” he said. “I don’t know how much of that was talk, I don’t know how much of that he had some type of knowledge on.
“I think EPO was kind of a gray area in the USADA testing. I think a lot of people were surprised – first and foremost Dana White – when they found out fighters weren’t being tested for that all those years. But now it’s being tested for, allegedly, and I haven’t heard of Usman failing any drug tests. So, I don’t know. I don’t know what to make of that.”
Mocking Glenn Robinson
Covington didn’t stop there, either. He also took a dig at Usman’s team — the Blackzillians, now known as Hard Knocks 365. Co-founder of the gym Glenn Robinson passed away last year due to a heart attack.
“Chaos” made a comment before that he passed away because Usman was ducking him and he made sure to bring it up again at the presser, tastelessly adding that Robinson would be watching their fight “from hell.”
The Blackzillians and ATT share a rivalry and while Robinson was not someone Lambert was friends with, he’s also not someone he would say bad things about either:
“I mean, the guy [Robinson] obviously wasn’t high on my list of people that I called friends or respected in the business,” he added of Covington’s comments. “But I mean, the guy passed away, what am I going to say? I’m not going to sit here and say great things about a guy just because he passed away. And I’m certainly not going to say bad things about somebody who has passed away. So, it is what it is.”

A lot has been made of the doctor stoppage call heading into the championship rounds of the UFC 244 main event between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz.
The pair went head-to-head for the Baddest Mother F*cker Championship. Masvidal seemingly dominated the fight from start to finish, dropping and stunning the younger Diaz brother several times. However, with two nasty cuts around the eye of Diaz heading into the fourth round, the doctor opted to stop the fight given their severity.
Both Masvidal and Diaz expressed disappointment with how the fight ended, but “Gamebred” was rightfully declared the winner nonetheless. Diaz complained after the fight that the stoppage was unjust, feeling robbed of the opportunity to come back strong in the championship rounds – which he claimed had been his gameplan all along as he was dealing with an injury coming into the fight.
Speaking to LowKickMMA, American Top Team (ATT) owner Dan Lambert stated he believes it was Masvidal who was truly robbed by the stoppage, as he had the likely possibility of finishing the fight taken away from him.
“I mean, as a fan, I would’ve liked to have seen it go longer just like anybody would have. I think Jorge is the one who got robbed on that stoppage, because I think it stopped Jorge from getting the opportunity from getting the finish,” Lambert said.
“Jorge wanted to finish the fight. I know Nate is a beast and he wasn’t ever going to quit, but I don’t think that fight was turning anytime soon in a fourth or fifth, sixth or seventh, or 90th round. I think Jorge was going to keep doing what Jorge did until that fight was over.”
With the victory, Masvidal was declared the winner of the one-off Baddest Mother F*cker Championship. It was a move by the UFC that was both criticized and praised by the MMA community, as UFC president Dana White and company went as far as making a physical belt for the occasion. Lambert, being a hardcore professional wrestling fan, was a supporter of the move.
“You know, you might be asking someone who is biased on this. I’m a hardcore wrestling fan,” Lambert said. “I thought it was the coolest idea. I thought it was really really cool. Man, I mean, Dana knows what he’s doing when it comes to promoting fights.
“And they love running big shows with title fights on top, Madison Square Garden with a title on top in November is always a big show, so when those two were the desired matchup, no it didn’t surprise me, because it adds a little more intrigue, it adds a little more promotion to the fight, and it was just a really cool idea.”
“You know, I think if Jorge were 10 years younger, he’d probably be looking for a title fight next,” Lambert said. “I think at this stage in Jorge’s life and his career I think Jorge wants whatever makes him the most money. So I think Jorge is going to have to wait and see what his options are.
“If Jorge had the opportunity to wait and fight a Conor McGregor, or if some of this talk gets legitimized about a potential boxing match with Canelo, and Jorge has the opportunity to go make that kind of money, I would strongly encourage Jorge to go grab that money. Because, you know, business, you never know what’s going to happen or when it’s going to happen. You got to grab it when you can.”
What do you think will ultimately be Masvidal’s next move?

Colby Covington has beef with tons of members of the UFC roster – including those within his own gym of American Top Team (ATT). The most notable being Jorge Masvidal, his former best friend, and Dustin Poirier. Covington even teased that things have gotten so bad he might have to leave ATT. However, ATT owner […]
“We got a big gym, and we got a lot of coaches with a lot of experience in dealing with issues that arise between fighters,” Lambert said. “So I’d be surprised if anyone exited the gym over a beef with another fighter. That’s just not the way it works.”
Lambert has been around the MMA game for quite some time. Given the current circumstances between Covington, Poirier, and Masvidal, he doesn’t see enough to warrant a fighter leaving the gym.
“People leave gyms for different reasons,” Lambert said. “I don’t think having beef with another fighter at the gym is a real good reason. There’s no need to have to train together. There’s no need to have to be together. So, you don’t like someone in your place of work, you just quit your job?”
Do you think Covington will remain with American Top Team?
