Things didn’t go Colby Covington’s way this past weekend (Sat. December 14, 2019) at UFC 245.

Covington was defeated by welterweight champion Kamaru Usman in the pay-per-view’s (PPV) main event. “Chaos” and Usman put on a tremendous back-and-forth bout, however, Usman was able to land a crushing shot that broke Covington’s jaw midway through the fight. Towards the end of the fifth round, Usman then put Covington away with just about a minute left.

Now, speaking to MMA Fighting, American Top Team (ATT) owner Dan Lambert has offered an update on Covington’s status. In regards to Covington’s broken jaw, Lambert reveals Covington is back in Florida and will be seeing an oral surgeon to see what he wants to do next.

“He came back to Florida to go see an oral surgeon here to figure out what he wanted to do,” Lambert said. “I’m not real familiar with what the different statuses are with the jaw but I know one thing, he’s a tough motherf*cker to fight with it for three rounds in that kind of stand-up war.”

Covington also appears to be in good spirits despite the defeat, as Lambert said “Chaos” wants to get right back into training as soon as possible.

“He is a 10 out of 10 as far as what I would hope his mindset would be after a fight like that,” Lambert said. “He wants to get right back in. He wants to get right back into training. He wants to get back into training as soon as he’s ready health wise. He wants to get back and prove that he’s the best.

“You never know how a fighter’s going to respond to something like that. When I first talked to him, I had my concerns cause you just never know. I could not have scripted his response any better than what I heard from him. He’s 1,000 percent positive, 1,000 percent motivated. He’s ready to go. He didn’t lose one piece of confidence in himself.”

What do you think about Covington wanting to get right back to work after suffering a broken jaw and TKO loss at UFC 245?

Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz’s highly-anticipated clash at UFC 244 didn’t end in the most thrilling fashion.

After a great buildup, and a great three rounds of action between the pair, the cageside physician opted to stop the fight due to the cuts surrounding Diaz’s eye. Fans were enraged with the decision, with some believing the cuts weren’t bad enough to warrant stopping the fight. As soon as the event came to a close, many called to see the rematch, including both Masvidal and Diaz themselves. Masvidal stated he thinks the rematch will happen, even if not immediately, he and the younger Diaz brother will run things back eventually.

Speaking to LowKickMMA, American Top Team (ATT) owner Dan Lambert expressed the same opinion. When asked about Diaz’s post-fight Instagram post, suggesting Masvidal, at one point, wanted out of the fight, Lambert denied any assumptions that the post was Diaz being disrespectful, but rather, venting his frustrations after feeling he was cheated out of the last two rounds of the fight.

“Man, I have a hard time calling Nate Diaz disrespectful,” Lambert said. “Nate Diaz is just Nate Diaz. He’s just his own character and that’s probably just the way he is in every aspect of his life. I think he felt cheated by not being able to come out for the next round. Like I said, I thought it was actually Jorge who got cheated out of being able to finish the fight.

“But at the end of the fight it sure sounded like fans wanted to see a rematch. If that paid the most money to Jorge over a title fight, or maybe a fight with Conor, I’m sure Jorge would be happy to do it. I’d probably be surprised if those two didn’t fight again at some point in the future. Maybe not next, but I’d be surprised if those guys did not fight again.”

Now, however, Masvidal seems to have rubbed older Diaz brother, Nick, the wrong way. There has been a lot of hype surrounding a potential fight between the pair next, as Nick looks to avenge his younger brother’s defeat. Regardless of what’s next for Masvidal, however, one thing is for certain – he’ll flock to whatever fight presents him with the biggest paycheck.

Do you think Masvidal and Diaz will rematch down the road?

If he made the transition to boxing, Jorge Masvidal would surprise a lot of people according to American Top Team owner Dan Lambert.

Earlier this month, Masvidal made his intentions known of wanting to face Alvarez in a boxing match. It wasn’t just to make headlines either — “Gamebred” was serious about it as he felt he brought unique tools to the sweet science.

It took Alvarez a while to respond, but he finally did on Tuesday, claiming he was not interested in fighting in MMA nor fighting an MMA fighter in the boxing ring, no matter how lucrative it was.

“With all due respect to everyone,” Alvarez said. “I respect what they do in their sport, they’re great fighters. But, boxing is just another thing.”

Lambert agrees with Alvarez for the most part. But even still, he gives his fighter in Masvidal a better chance than most of succeeding in boxing.

“I’d give him more of a chance than I would give Canelo against Jorge in an MMA fight,” Lambert told Lowkick MMA. “But whenever you’re going into somebody’s sport and that’s not your sport, obviously you’re at a huge disadvantage. I don’t know what it is about combat sports that give people the impression that somebody can come in and just win. You never see somebody saying they can come off the street and get a tennis racket and beat Nadal because they used to play tennis when they were a kid.

“But everybody thinks in a fight, ‘Oh hey, I can do that,’ that guy’s a pro. Boxing and MMA are related, there are a lot more similarities, one punch, who knows. But obviously Canelo would be a monster favorite in that fight.”

White Would Make Canelo vs. Masvidal

If there was interest from Alvarez and his camp, Lambert believes it’s more than possible UFC president Dana White makes the fight happen:

“He made Conor and Floyd,” Lambert added. “On paper, I’d give Masvidal a bigger chance than I would’ve given Conor. But Dana is going to do what makes the most money for Dana and the UFC. If somebody offered Jorge an insane amount of money to take that fight, Jorge would be all over it.”

To most, it would seem unlikely.

But then again, Masvidal has enjoyed a monster year that has seen him make the transition from a hardcore fan’s fighter to a mainstream star.

Further proof of that came when Alvarez’s light heavyweight title fight with Sergey Kovalev was delayed until the end of Masvidal’s UFC 244 headliner with Nate Diaz earlier this month:

“The only thing less likely than that, would be the President of the United States coming to sit ringside for a fight, and maybe The Rock coming out to put the belt on the winner,” Lambert said. “I mean, jeez, where this sport is going, the speed in which it’s going, it just blows my mind every day.”
