New York, you’re one step closer to the promised land.

Earlier today, the New York Senate passed a unanimous vote of 42-18 in favor of a bill that would legalize MMA in the Empire State.

The bill faced serious opposition in the past, and today proved no different on all ends of the spectrum, but the support of 42 senators outweighed the 18 detractors, leading to the bill passing through Senate.

While MMA has not been officially made legal in New York yet, the passing of the bill through the New York Senate was a necessary step—one that was taken as a complete victory by Dana White and others on Twitter and even Facebook.

The next necessary step is to get the bill passed through the Assembly, where Bob Reilly and other New York State Officials hold a seat, and in the past, that has also been an area of concern.

However, with how unanimously it passed through the Senate, there’s little doubt that it does stand a chance to make it through the assembly.

Will this be an easy feat?

Absolutely not.

it will involve the presentation of many strong, iron-willed facts to support the passing of the legislation as well as many more strong, iron-willed arguments to retort against the opposition’s case as to why the state should not legalize this sport, and history has shown that once this type of opposition is faced, it rarely ever loses.

It will not be an easy task to pass this legislation out of the State Assembly at all.

Then again, silencing the cries for an MMA event emanating from The Big Apple will not be an easy feat either.

UFC: Jon Fitch a Tad Upset About Rumored Nick Diaz vs. Georges St. Pierre Bout

UFC Welterweight, Jon Fitch, has been asking for a rematch with Welterweight Champion, Georges St. Pierre for what seems like three years now. Fitch is coming of a Draw versus BJ Penn, and will be sidelined until December due to shoulder surgery. He’s 21-1-1 in his last 23 fights. That one loss was the lopsided defeat to GSP.

After hearing of the new of a Champion vs. Champion matchup between Nick Diaz and Georges St. Pierre rumored to take place in December, Fitch took to Twitter to vent his frustration.

Fitch posted, “why would that fight be good. Diaz got title cuz Shields vacated the belt. Paper champ.”

He later posted, “Let’s see Shields vs. Diaz for number one contender while I’m hurt.”

He first calls Nick Diaz a “paper champ.” Then proposes a No. 1 contender’s match between teammates Nick Diaz and Jake Shields.

Does he mentiuon teammates fighting each other for the No. 1 contender spot because Dana White kept pushing Fitch to fight his teammate Josh Koscheck in order to get a title fight versus GSP?

He wasn’t finished, “Keep that going Fitch Fanatics GSPvsDiaz=bullsh**”

Fitch may disagree with the match-up selection, but outside of Anderson Silva, Diaz is the only opponent for GSP the majority of fans want to see.

Nick Diaz: Is He Someone Who Can Bring out the Finisher in GSP?

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre is without question, one of the most dominant fighters to ever step into the UFC Octagon.

His training for a fight shows how effective he uses all his talents. His game plan is something that he sticks to religiously, no matter what.

That same game plan, however, has been good and it has been notching wins to his already impressive career, but when you watch his fights, you see someone who will bust you up, but not finish you off.

And that is what I miss about the Canadian born fighter. Where did GSP’s killer instinct go?

Ever since winning the UFC Welterweight Title from Matt Serra due to referee stoppage back in UFC 83, GSP has gone to the decision in five of his last six title defenses. Granted all of them were unanimous, but sometimes you just crave for more.

UFC President Dana White would rather have a fight be finished than leaving it up to the judges. And we all know how sometimes we don’t agree with their decisions.

Maybe GSP needs someone that will push him to the distance.

Josh Koscheck pissed GSP off and had his face mangled in the process. But wouldn’t it be awesome to see GSP finish off Koscheck? Submission, TKO, KO, it doesn’t matter. Lots of people hate Koscheck at a cellular level and was craving for him to be taken out.

GSP had his chance, not once, but twice and it still went to the judges.

Where is the GSP that obliterated Matt Serra for the title? Where is the GSP that destroyed UFC Hall Of Famer Matt Hughes not once, but twice? Where is the GSP that broke Sean Sherk’s nose?

That GSP was a beast to be feared.

Although a fight between GSP and UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva looms around. There is always a possibility that the fight will be between two legendary fighters that could cancel each other because they are that good.

Anderson himself has also had his share of fights go the distance and to be honest, a Silva fight going the distance is not something you want to see.

As of now, the rumors circulating around the MMA universe is revolving around a potential fight between GSP and Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz. Now that fight could be the fight that pushes St. Pierre.

Nick Diaz is a one hell of a fighter and most of all, the MMA “Bad Boy” is a finisher.

If it wasn’t for an unfortunate poke in the eye, GSP’s fight against Jake Shields could have been better. But when you were watching the fight, it did look like that GSP was playing it safe to eek out a judges decision.

Georges kept the fight standing up, which exploited the fact that Shields’ stand up game absolutely sucked.

That being said, GSP knew that Shield’s ground game is his strong point so he kept it on his feet. He can’t do that with Diaz. If you don’t think Diaz’s stand-up is sick, just watch his fight against Paul Daley. Daley is a talented striker and Diaz disposed of him in the first round. Trust me when I say this, Nick Diaz’s stand-up is the real deal.

The one thing I love about Diaz is that he loathes leaving any of his fights to the judges. The kid from Stockton, California can bring alot of problems to GSP. His unorthodox stand-up style along with his sick ground game makes it very difficult to match up with.

Although a fight between GSP and Anderson Silva would be great, a fight between GSP and Nick Diaz might be better.

Well those are my thoughts. Now it is time to hear yours. Is Nick Diaz the type of fighter who will bring out the finisher in GSP? Or has GSP become a fighter that lost that “finishing feeling”?

Or do we have to rely on Anderson Silva to bring out the finisher in him? Until then this is Balistik signing out.

Peace Out

Chael Sonnen: Why Possible UFC Return May Be the Best Thing for UFC and MMA

Initially, it was reported that Chael Sonnen’s indefinite suspension at the hands of the California State Athletic Commission would continue—effectively retiring Sonnen from the sport of mixed martial arts forever since it is a common practice for other athletic commissions to honor each other’s suspensions.

However, news has recently broken that the commission made a mistake in interpreting their suspension law. Sonnen does not have to wait for a year to seek a renewal of his license and instead can seek renewal on June 29th, 2011.

This is huge news not only for Sonnen, but for UFC President Dana White, for all of the middleweight fighters on the roster, and for all fans who follow MMA.

Love him or hate him, Chael Sonnen is one of the most controversial figures in the sport and is thus a massive draw. With that being said, there are three specific things that can happen if Dana White uses Sonnen and his finely tuned trash talk properly that could be of immense benefit to the UFC and therefore to the sport itself.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion, Ricco Rodriguez, was recently apprehended for allegedly resisting arrest and assaulting a cab driver in an affluent Phoenix suburb.

Rodriguez and his female companion hired taxicab service to drive them to a popular sports bar in the area.  When the cab fare calculated to $75, the 33-year-old mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter was only willing to pay $20, as explained by Myfoxphoenix.com.

According to the Phoenix police, it wasn’t until Ricco’s companion was willing to pay the remainder, an argument ensued between the driver and the heavyweight fighter, in which the cab driver promptly called 911.  The former champ then proceeded to grab the man and throw him to the ground.

At 6’4” and over 220 pounds, it took three of Phoenix’s finest to subdue the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) black belt, injuring one of them.

“It’s our policy to handcuff behind, that did not occur.  He was struggling with the officers, flailing his arms… one of the officers was pushed against the wall, and we believe at that point he sustained a minor injury or cut to his elbow,” says Sgt. Steve Martos.

The San Jose-born fighter is now facing charges of assault and resisting arrest.

Ricco has seen his share of problems in the past, as he once tested positive for marijuana and cocaine and was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC). Plus, he appeared on season one of the VH1 reality television show, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.

Rodriguez’ last MMA bout was a unanimous decision win over The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) contestant, James McSweeney, on February 26, 2011.  He is also currently on an 11-fight win streak.

UFC News: Maiquel Falcao Plans to Return to the UFC in the Future

After earning a win over Gerald Harris in his debut at UFC 123, one would guess that Chute Boxe standout Maiquel Falcao would be on the rise in the UFC light heavyweight division, but it wasn’t meant to be.

After being scheduled to appear at UFC Rio this summer, Falcao heard the news that not only had he lost his spot on the card, but consequently he lost his job, too. Upon hearing the news from his trainer, Marcelo Brigadeiro, the Brazilian said he was determined to return to the organization.

“I know they all liked me and they could tell I can fight anyone in my weight class. I don’t have any doubts that I’ll be back in UFC soon,” Falcao said to TATAME.com.

An impressive, but controversial win for Falcao left a bad taste in UFC president Dana White‘s mouth. White was disinterested due to the lack of action that was put forth, particularly from Harris. The bout ultimately cost Harris his job.

But despite picking up the victory, Falcao’s past was brought up after learning of a lawsuit stemming from 2002 that saw Falcao get involved in an altercation at a nightclub in his hometown. The legal issues were enough to abruptly dismiss the Brazilian of his duties, which he said he was surprised upon hearing.

But Falcao said he can’t do anything but accept the company’s decision.

“How can I be against the decision of the greatest event on earth and the most successful sportive organization in the world?” he said.

“It’s up to me to deal with it and work so that I come back and become a UFC champion.”

Falcao said he was undecided on whether to still attend UFC Rio this summer, but for now, he intends to continue training and remain active.

“My plans are to keep training and winning,” Falcao said regarding his future.

“My role is to be prepared to win and when he tell me what my next step is, I’ll be there to do my job.”
