UFC title contender Volkan Oezdemir is not letting anything get in his way of being a world champion, and that includes his recent arrest on a felony charge.

The UFC has already announced that Oezdemir will face champion Daniel Cormier for the light heavyweight title at UFC 220 on January 20th in Boston, Massachusetts.

There were many fight fans that thought this bout would not be made official due to the fact that Oezdemir was charged last month with aggravated battery with serious bodily injury, which is a second-degree felony charge. You could mark the argument that it would put the title bout in jeopardy.

Oezdemir is vowing to keep his thoughts on the fight and the huge opportunity rather than his pending court dates.

“I have a really good team around me,” Oezdemir told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “Believe me, everything is going to be all right. … I don’t really know about all the details, how it’s gonna happen. But definitely I’m gonna fight, and I’m gonna be champion.”

“That’s it,” Oezdemir said. “I have one goal in mind. Whatever can happen around me, it doesn’t really bother me. Now it’s all about my title fight, my weight in January. And that’s it. I’m really focused on that, and I keep it out of the way.”

It’s well known by now that Oezdemir was arrested and charged with felony battery in Florida as a result of a  bar fight in August where Oezdemir allegedly hit an individual. Oezdemir was released on $10,000 bond.

Oezdemir noted in the interview that he could not go into detail about what happened outside Capone’s bar.

He mentioned that he would like to talk about his side of what happened when the legal process is over and believes there is a reason why he was arrested on the charge last month when the alleged battery happened

“Unfortunately, I can’t, because it’s an ongoing investigation,” Oezdemir said. “My lawyer told me not to. That’s his job. My job is to fight, to be ready for the fight. And I’m thinking I’m doing a great job of that, because I’m feeling great. I’m ready to fight. Jan. 20 is gonna be huge.”

“Not gonna say nothing, but it’s possibly linked,” Oezdemir said. “It’s all good. I’m focusing on the positive, and that’s the only thing that matters, I think.”

“My focus anyway is on the title shot,” Oezdemir said. “I believe whatever is gonna be handled. Everything is gonna be handled the right way with this, and it’s not gonna pose any problem.”

The Daniel Cormier vs. Volkan Oezdemir light heavyweight title fight will go forward as planned despite ‘No Time’s’ recent felony arrest for battery.

News arrived from the UFC tonight that Cormier and Oezdemir will square off at January 20’s UFC 220 pay-per-view (PPV) card from Boston, Massachusetts.

The bout had been heavily discussed by Cormier after he conducted a recent online poll to decide his next challenger, which Oezdemir won after dispatching his last two opponents Jimi Manuwa and Misha Cirkunov in 70 seconds combined. But an arrest for aggravated battery causing serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony charge, after he allegedly knocked a man unconscious outside a Florida bar in August put the fight in serious jeopardy.

Originally from Switzerland, Oezdmeir has since surrendered his passport to Broward County court, and his lawyer Bruce Zimet maintained that his client was only acting in self-defense during an arraignment hearing two weeks ago.

The arrest adds to an already insane UFC light heavyweight title picture, where Cormier became the official champion for a second time due to decorated former champ and heated rival Jon Jones screwing up after “Bones” tested positive for anabolic steroid Turinabol during an in-competition drug test the day before his third-round knockout of Cormier at July 29’s UFC 214, a victory that was supposed to bring order to the chaotic landscape.

But as has been the case with the ultra-talented but oft-troubled Jones, nothing is certain, and Cormier was rightfully made the champion again even after he lost badly.

His new era begins in Boston on January 20; that is if Oezdemir can make it to the Octagon without incident.

The UFC announced Wednesday that Daniel Cormier will put his light heavyweight belt on the line against Volkan Ozdemir.

The fight is scheduled for UFC 220 on Jan. 20 at TD Garden in Boston.

Cormier was reinstated as the light heavyweight champion in September after Jon Jones tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs following his victory over Cormier at UFC 214.

There were doubts about whether this matchup would happen seeing how Oezdemir was “arrested on second-degree felony charges for aggravated battery with serious bodily injury,” per MMA Fighting.

The MMA Fighting report detailed the incident, noting Kevin Cohen alleged Oezdemir knocked him out near a Florida bar.

“Cohen claims the run-in caused him to lose consciousness for roughly 14 minutes, be treated for concussion symptoms at a local hospital, and be given multiple staples for lacerations,” MMA Fighting wrote, although Oezdemir’s attorney said his client wasn’t the aggressor in the incident.

Now that the fight is scheduled, Oezdemir figures to pose a daunting challenge to Cormier with a 15-1-0 record.

The No. 2-ranked light heavyweight also fought at UFC 214 and handled Jimi Manuwa in a first-round knockout to continue his streak of dominance.

It looks like top-ranked UFC light heavyweight contender Volkan Oezdemir’s recent legal issues won’t get in the way of his contending for Daniel Cormier’s 205-pound title.

Despite his recent arrest for a battery charge that stemmed from a bar fight, Dana White told media at a luncheon that “No Time” will still likely get the championship nod for Cormier’s title (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“He’s probably still gonna fight, yeah,” White said.

Oezdemir was arrested back on November 18th in Fort Lauderdale after his involvement in a bar room brawl back in August. “No Time” reportedly punched and knocked out a man by the name of Kevin Cohen outside a Florida bar by the name of Capone’s. Cohen claims that he was unconscious for 14 minutes and was treated for concussion-like symptoms at a nearby hospital and given stitches for his lacerations.

The UFC light heavyweight was charged with a second-degree felony for aggravated battery with serious bodily injury. Oezdemir’s attorney argued that he was not the aggressor in the altercation and his actions were completely justified.

Oezdemir is currently undefeated in his UFC tenure and has downed the likes of Jimi Manuwa, Ovince Saint Preux, and Misha Cirkunov. It has been rumored that the UFC is targeting a title bout between Daniel Cormier and Oezdemir at UFC 220 on January 20th from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

If Oezdemir is unable to compete, Cormier has expressed his willingness to defend his title against any other top contender.
