One UFC champion could be making a move to a different weight class and that is UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

Cormier, who is set to turn 39 in March, is willing to at least entertain the idea of moving back up to heavyweight to win another UFC title.

However, if he does end up making this change then it needs to happen soon as age is not on his side.

“DC” needs to first focus on his next challenger and it’s not going to be an easy fight as he is set to put his light heavyweight title on the line when he steps inside the Octagon against hard-hitting prospect Volkan Oezdemir in the co-main event of UFC 220.

In the main event, the heavyweight title will be on the line when Stipe Miocic attempts to retain his title against Francis Ngannou.

Cormier went on record in a recent interview that if he were to make a weight class change then he would need him and his team to come up with a solid plan in order to compete with the world-class athletes who are in the heavyweight division.

“I’m not going in there to lose and say I gave it my best shot,” Cormier told MMA Junkie. “If I go in there with Miocic or Ngannou, I’m going to win. That’s just who I am. So that would just be me and my team really coming up with a solid plan on how I’m going to get up to a healthy, strong, 235, 240 pounds to go and fight those dudes.”

UFC 220 is set to take place on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

The main card will air on pay-per-view while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Daniel Cormier Open to Fighting for Heavyweight Title After UFC 220

Reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier may be looking down the line at a potential return to the heavyweight division.

In an interview on MMAjunkie Radio (h/t MMA Junkie’s Fernanda Prates), Cormier responded to the prospect of beating the winner of UFC 220’s main event, Stipe Miocic vs. Francis Ngannou, for the UFC heavyweight title by stating, “It would be the most amazing thing in the world.”

Cormier is a former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix victor and started his UFC career by going 2-0 in the heavyweight division. The current 205-pound champion has only been a light heavyweight since February of 2014. Thirteen of his 19 professional wins have come in the heavyweight division.

Cormier spoke about the process it would take for the scenario to play out. He would need to construct a plan with his team to bulk back up “to a healthy, strong, 235, 240 pounds.”

The thought of Cormier returning to heavyweight for a showdown against the winner of the heavyweight title tilt is nothing new. Prominent figures such as MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani have already pontificated about this plan. With both light heavyweight and heavyweight belts up for grabs at UFC 220, it is an idea most definitely in play for 2018.

For it to become a viable option, Cormier must first defeat Volkan Oezdemir in the co-main event at UFC 220 in Boston at the TD Garden arena on January 20. If Cormier gets past another 205-pound contender, perhaps a superfight with the heavyweight champion will be in order.

It’s no secret that UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is a big fan of professional wrestling and he has let his opinions about the sports entertainment industry known via his official Twitter account.

However, he has been caught up in some backlash over a recent tweet he decided to send out to his followers on the social media platform.

Ring of Honor (ROH), which is based in Baltimore, held its final PPV (pay-per-view) event of the year this past Friday night, Final Battle, that was headlined by Dalton Castle defeating Cody Rhodes to win the ROH World Title.

The match that caught the attention of the UFC champion was a six-man tag team title match between champions The Hung Bucks taking on Dragon Lee, Flip Gordon, and Titán.

During the match, there were some high spots including hurricanranas and drop kicks.

Cormier sounded off on the spot by writing the following on his official Twitter account:

“@philbaroni this is actually pathetic. This is what people wanna see? Go to a god dang gymnastics competition. Suplex, bodyslam, piledriver do some old school wrestling man. DDT, I remember when the frankensteiner was the most you’d ever see someone flip. I say Boo to this BS.”

As a result of that comment, pro wrestling fans fired back at Cormier via Twitter. Most notably was Rhodes, who is the son of the late “American Dream” Dusty Rhodes.

“It’s not pathetic. The paying audience enjoyed it. UFC is thriving, and pro-wrestling has been going strong since 1920…besides most of y’all ask hunter for a job when the wheels fall off anyway, and most are on the comp list at staples…so lay the f*ck off.”

“I do ask for comps, I am a fan, I didn’t say anything about anything but that sequence of the match. Just be very careful bud! I’ve been a fan of urs too but be very careful. Lay off the cuss words it’s not that serious. And I won’t need a job. I’ll be good.”

Cormier gave his side of the situation during Monday’s episode of MMAjunkie Radio.

“Listen, I’m a big-time wrestling guy,” Cormier said. “Like, I like watching that shit, and I know a lot people make fun of me for it. But I didn’t like that sequence of the match, and I’m going to say it. And if I want to say it on my Twitter, I’m going to say it on my Twitter. All those guys get all butt-hurt about it, and I’m like, ‘Hey, guys, not everybody is going to like everything you freaking do, so shut up.’ I told Cody Roades to lay off the swear words, because then when you start cussing like that, you’re pretending to be serious. And you don’t want to be serious with me.”

Alexander Gustafsson Won’t Give Up On Rematch With Jon Jones

Former two-time title challenger Alexander Gustafsson may have recently underwent a shoulder surgery, but “The Mauler” is still aiming to face the winner of the 205-pound title bout between Daniel Cormier and Volkan Oezdemir at January’s UFC 220.

Yet there’s an opponent he still wants to fight aside from “DC” or “No Time,” and that’s understandably disgraced former champion Jon “Bones” Jones, who he fought to a close split decision defeat in an all-time classic at 2013’s UFC 165. That won’t be happening anytime soon, unfortunately enough, as Jones is currently awaiting his hearing for a disappointing second USADA test failure prior to his third-round knockout win over Cormier in their rematch at this July’s UFC 214.

It was nothing Gustafsson hadn’t seen before, so when he was asked about the jaw-dropping transgression during an appearance on The MMA Hour, the Swedish star said he wasn’t surprised and actually felt sorry for “Bones” due to the talent he possessed:

“I wasn’t shocked. I wasn’t surprised and I feel sorry for him. What can I say? I just feel sorry for him…that he’s got new things coming up all the time. I’m not surprised at all and I just feel sorry for him. It’s bad for everything. It’s bad for the sport.

“Look what he did to DC – he’s a beast. Nobody has done what he’s done and he’s just getting caught over and over again.”

Questioned why he would feel sorry for a fighter who had the fight game in his hand but let it slip away for all sorts of drugs, “The Mauler” revealed that he thought “Bones” obviously had something wrong with him to risk what he has:

“There must be something wrong with him, right? You know, you just don’t do that. How should I explain it? I just think he’s taking all the wrong decisions all the time and for that I am feeling sorry for him, basically.”

It can’t be denied that Jones has made mixed martial arts look bad in the public eye due to seemingly never-ending fight cancellations and an increasingly tainted legacy due to multiple performance-enhancing and recreational drug failures; however, “The Mauler” wants to face the controversial would-be G.O.A.T. one more time – if he could only show up to the Octagon drug-free:

“I want him back. I want another fight with him. I want to fight him at some point in my future career. I just want to fight him one more time and maybe for that reason I want to see him come back,” he said.

“But, at the same time, he’s been getting caught a lot of times. If he doesn’t come back, he doesn’t come back. I just feel like it’s sad for the sport and for the whole thing.”

Gustafsson then closed by offering a strange stance that Jones somehow still held the belt because of how he dispatched Cormier.

But even though he views “Bones” as the true champion, he wouldn’t let Cormier’s redeeming qualities go unnoticed:

“He has the belt. I want to fight DC for sure. I want that belt, but for me the real champion is Jon Jones of course because he has been destroying everybody in the division. Everything he’s done has not been done before,” stated Gustafsson.

“So, for me, he’s the real champion but I accept DC as a champion too. He’s a good guy and a good fighter and the only person he has lost to is Jon Jones. He’s the real deal and I think he’s champion material.”

The only major part of that logic that isn’t true is the fact that Jones simply is not the champion anymore, as he’s been stripped of the title an alarming amount of times to where it’s almost hard to remember all of the instances.

He certainly would be one of if not the greatest fighters in MMA history if he could only stay clean, yet the fact remains we just don’t know if steroids affected some, many, or all of his UFC fights, and if so, how much.

His head kick knockout of Cormier was a thing of beauty, but would it have happened if he had not been on steroids? “Bones’” team is claiming a tainted supplement once again, and he is facing a potential four-year suspension if handed the maximum penalty.

That might end any chance of Gustafsson getting his rematch – a fight he probably had little shot of actually getting in the first place.
