Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is typically a calm, cool and collective individual. However, when it comes to former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, he didn’t hold back his frustration once his name was brought up in a recent interview.

When he was asked about Jones knocking out his teammate, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, in the third round of their title fight back at UFC 214 while competing with the anabolic steroid Turinabol in his system, Velasquez let his voice known.

“DC” and Velasquez are training partners at American Kickboxing Academy (AKA). According to the former UFC champion, Jones’ actions were “f*cking bullsh*t.”

“It all comes down to people being dirty,” Velasquez told reporters in a media scrum in Seoul, South Korea (via MMA Today). “Like, our gym, me, Daniel, we don’t need extra substances to make us better. We do it by working hard. We’ve done this since we were kids. We learned how to train, and train right, and go out there and be competitive.

So, if you bring steroids or just some kind of performance-enhancing drug into it — if it’s not allowed, it’s not allowed. We want everybody to be on the same page, so for him to do that, for Jon Jones to do that, that’s bullsh*t. That’s f*cking bullsh*t. Why? Did you not want to lose to Daniel? Is that what it was? Why?”

If you recall, Jones ended up testing positive for the anabolic steroid Turinabol in an in-competition drug test administered on July 28th, which was just one day before UFC 214. This news came about just weeks after Jones seemingly re-righted his career with the win, which ended up being overturned into a no-contest as a result of the failed drug test.

This wasn’t Jones’ first time failing a drug test. The former UFC champion previously tested positive for two banned substances, clomiphene and letrozol, before his title fight with Cormier at UFC 200 last July.

This led to USADA found out that the banned substances were from a tainted sexual performance enhancement pill. Jones faces a four-year suspension from USADA for his failed UFC 214 drug test.

Despite that Jones’ team suggested that he ingested Turinabol unknowingly from a potentially tainted supplement, Velasquez is still far from okay with the way the situation played out at UFC 214.

“We want everybody on the same playing field,” Velasquez said. “When we go out there, we want it to be even as far as that goes, and having it come down to training, preparation, and being able to fight.

The guy that goes out there and shines on that day is the guy who’s going to win, and it’s generally from working hard and being prepared — and not from anything else.”

UFC Fighter Insists Joe Rogan & Daniel Cormier Owe Him An Apology

One fighter who competed at UFC 216 earlier this month isn’t too pleased with how commentators Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier announced his fight.

Cody Stamann, who entered UFC 216 with a 15-1 professional record, scored a split-decision victory over Tom Duquesnoy, who was riding quite a hype train of his own heading into the fight. After re-watching the bout, Stamann feels as if Rogan and Cormier were ‘biased’ towards Duquesnoy:

“As soon as it came out, I watched it,” Stamann told MMA Fighting. “I had my phone hooked up to my Bluetooth, I was with a few people and I was listening to the commentary, and now by the end of the first round I was frustrated enough to want to throw my phone through a wall after what they were saying. They were talking about Duquesnoy, where he trains, and I’m taking him down, hitting him with combinations and they’re not saying anything about that. I felt like Daniel Cormier and Joe Rogan owe me a little bit of an apology.

“I felt like they were way more biased than they normally would be and I’m really not one to complain about that kind of stuff, but I was like, holy cow. I’ve had probably a hundred different people tell me that exact same thing, they were really loving Tom Duquesnoy for those first two rounds but in the third round they didn’t say his name again. So I guess I’m happy that I won them over, but at the same time that’s not their job to be that biased.”

Despite the fact that he wasn’t pleased with how the fight was commentated, Stamann remains thankful that he took the opportunity to fight Duquesnoy and that he was able to ‘steal that shine’:

“I think when you go in there and beat a guy that everyone is talking about being the next bantamweight champion, I definitely think a lot of people opened their eyes up to me as an athlete on Saturday night,” said Stamann. “His coach Greg Jackson was saying before the fight that Duquesnoy has all the capabilities of being a world champion. All these different media analysts were saying this guy’s the next thing, like, ‘Watch out Cody Garbrandt, this guy he’s coming for everybody.’

“He’s got a humongous following, he’s got the whole country of France following him basically. He had every single thing that the UFC would want in a guy coming into the UFC. All the hype, everybody thought he was the man, so when I had the opportunity to fight him I was all over that. I knew that was my opportunity to steal that shine.”

What do you make of Stamann’s comments?

When Kevin Lee made his walk to the Octagon last week for his interim title fight against Tony Ferguson at UFC 216, mixed martial arts (MMA) fans were almost instantly informed “The Motown Phenom” was suffering from a staph infection on his chest.

UFC commentator Joe Rogan pointed it out on the broadcast, and UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier followed up by confirming he believed it was, in fact, a staph infection. On a recent episode of his podcast ‘Talk & Talker,’ Cormier discussed being a part of the UFC 216 broadcast and noted that the commentary team was told not to mention the staph infection – but stated he did anyway (quotes via MMA Mania):

“So we’re on air, right, and Rogan goes ‘is that staph?’” Cormier said. “And somebody in my ear, I don’t know who it is, goes ‘don’t say nothing.’ And I was like ‘What the hell? Do I address this, or do I not say anything?’”

“So I was like ‘it is.’ I couldn’t help myself, I go ‘it is staph.’ Because it’s big and red, and raised up.”

Lee has noted before that having staph may have impacted his ability to cut weight as well as his performance inside the Octagon, as he suffered a third-round submission loss via triangle choke to Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title. Cormier also discussed the negative affects staph has on an athlete’s performance:

“The issue is you can take antibiotics to get better. But again, antibiotics, it’s the devil when you’re getting ready for a fight because it f*cks with your cardio,” Cormier explained. “You don’t really have much of an option in terms of feeling better when you have staph.

“In training, you go ‘oh my goodness, what is this? It might me staph.’ You stop, you get on antibiotics, and you get better. When you’re a week from the biggest fight of your career, you go ‘oh shit, this is staph, but I gotta keep training.’ You don’t have the option to just shut it down.”

Cormier believes Lee didn’t get a ‘fair shake’ due to the fact that he was getting tired as the fight went on, while Ferguson was on his game and getting better:

“For Kevin Lee, he had no option because he couldn’t not fight,” Cormier said. “And you saw it, I mean between the second and third round, he told his corner, he goes ‘I’m just so tired.’”

“It’s sad because he didn’t get a fair shake, but the reality is, Tony Ferguson was on his game. And it was just getting worse because Tony was just getting better as the fight was going on.”
