It looks like the long-awaited Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones rematch to unify the light heavyweight titles will have to wait and headline another card other than July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas.

News came today that Jones will potentially be on the sidelines for six months pending an x-ray on his left foot after his one-sided decision win over Ovince Saint Preux in the main event of last Saturday’s tonight’s (Sat., April 23, 2016) UFC 197 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena, also in Las Vegas.

Jones was spotted with the injury backstage, but insisted he was perfectly fine at the event’s post-fight presser. He could be cleared by an orthopedic doctor even if his x-ray is positive; however, if it is not, Jones will be out of action until October 21, 2016.

Featuring two title fights and a number of wild bouts, UFC 197 resulted in a rather lengthy medical suspension list including St. Preux, who also received a full six-month sit for a broken left ulna. The full UFC 197 medical suspensions are as follows courtesy of MMA Fighting:

Jon Jones: Must have left foot x-rayed, if positive then requires clearance by an orthopedic doctor or no contest until 10/21

UFC light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier was slated to return this past Saturday (April 23, 2016) at UFC 197, but was forced off the card with an injury just two weeks prior. His bitter rival and former champ Jon Jones instead faced Ovince St-Preux in the main event of the Las Vegas pay-per-view, defeating him by unanimous decision and winning the interim title in the process. The win set up the inevitable rematch between “DC” and “Bones,” which has been brewing since their first fight back in January 015.

So much has happened in that time, and Jones came very close to serving a prison sentence while Cormier was enjoying the life of the 205-pound champion. Taking on and submitting Anthony Johnson at UFC 187, “DC” would go on to defed once against Alexander Gustafsso while Jones worked out his troubles following the infamous New Mexico hit-and-run.

DC vs. Jon Jones

Cormier’s loss that night on January 3 at UFC 182 left a lot of questions unanswered, and did little to settle the beef between the two light-heavyweight titans. Although there was no question who’d won the fight, it was clearly neither man’s greatest performance. Fast forward to present day, and “DC” said he could’ve easily beaten the “Bones” that showed up against OSP, and suddenly a spot on a huge PPV card had opened up unexpectedly.

Once Conor McGregor was pulled from UFC 200 for refusing to attend his first media obligations for the event, speculation raged as to who would replace ‘The Notorious’ opposite Nate Diaz in the main event. Then Diaz declared he was now ‘on vacation,’ and all of a sudden there’s scope for a big title fight to headline the landmark event. A perfect opportunity for Cormier vs. Jones 2? Yup, and here’s the condition “DC” laid out for taking that spot:

With the super stacked UFC 198 card in Brazil, and also to an extent UFC 199, taking up a whole bunch of the promotion’s top talent, is there really any other option for UFC 200? With McGregor declaring he was back on the card before being shot down by Dana White, the rift between their marquis star and the organization could potentially be growing.

How would you feel about the UFC 200 card if it was headlined by Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 2, and Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar for the interim (or maybe undisputed?) featherweight strap?

Jon Jones Believes Opponent Switch Reason For Performance

Jon Jones made his return to the Octagon in more than a year Saturday night at UFC 197. He defeated Ovince Saint Preux by unanimous decision to become the new interim light heavyweight champion. Jones’s win now paves the way for a rematch with champion Daniel Cormier.

Dana White has indicated that the rematch could be the main event at UFC 200 if both fighters are medically cleared. “Bones” did not have his best performance inside the cage despite his dominant win. He acknowledged it in the post-fight interview and press conference.

“I was way too hesitant in there,” Jones said in the post-fight press conference. “I am grateful for a lot but I am still a little bit disappointed.”

Jon Jones was originally supposed to fight Daniel Cormier but he pulled out with an injury and Ovince Saint Preux stepped in to take the fight on short notice. The switching up of opponents could have been a reason for the New York native’s performance, according to Jones.

“I think it was more of the switching up opponents,” Jones further said. “I am big into studying. Me and my team.”

In the past, Jon Jones declined to take a fight against Chael Sonnen at UFC 151 after Dan Henderson pulled out. The entire event itself was ultimately cancelled so Jones felt that he wanted to take the fight against OSP and make up for it.

“I’m not one to fight last minute opponents like that,” Jones said further. “I switched up to a big old hard hitting southpaw. I was so primed to fight Daniel Cormier.”

Ultimately, Jones did win the fight impressively and will fight Daniel Cormier at a later date.

As Jon Jones exited the Octagon Saturday night at UFC 197, he caught rival Daniel Cormier sitting several feet away from him.

Cormier, the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion, joined the broadcast team for the main event of the card, which saw Jones defeat Ovince Saint Preux to become interim champion.

That sets the two up for a likely date this July at UFC 200 as long as everyone is clear to go in roughly 11 weeks.

As “Bones” began the walk to the back, he didn’t take his eyes of “DC” until expressing his feelings for the former Olympian with the “one-finger salute.”

“It was me just being a jerk,” said Jones, during his appearance on the FS1 post-fight show. “He may have been really nice to me calling the fights. I’m not sure. I just wanted to cover my end.”

Cormier was complimentary for the most part, continually stating Jones was the greatest light heavyweight of all-time. He suffered his lone career loss to date to Jones back in 2015.

While he never got the finish vs. OSP, Jones was in complete control despite it being his first fight in over a year. The performance, though, left a sour taste in his mouth.

“I was getting booed,” Jones said. “I’ve never been booed in my career. I’m my biggest critic. I had an expectation to beat him and I didn’t really get to do that.”

Dana White On Jon Jones, Demetrious Johnson, UFC 197

UFC president Dana White appeared on the post-fight show for UFC 197 late Saturday night to discuss things with Megan Olivi on FOX Sports 1.

The card featured Jon Jones besting Ovince Saint Preux to become the interim light heavyweight champion after Jones’ planned fight vs. Daniel Cormier was scrapped due to an injury.

Also, Demetrious Johnson defended his flyweight title with a first round finish of Henry Cejudo, while Edson Barboza topped Anthony Pettis.

Here are some highlights of the interview with White:

Dana White on Jones’ return

“Cormier’s dying right now, wishing he was in there. I’m a firm believer in ring rust. Jon looked rusty and it was good that it was OSP. Now Jones knows what he has to do when he gets back in the gym. He went the five rounds. This was good for him.”

White on Saint Preux

“OSP’s stock went up. He did very well against someone many people believe is one of the best ever. OSP has a broken arm. He suffered it sometime around the fourth round. I don’t know about Jones.”

White on Johnson

“I think he’s ridiculously, incredibly talented. He’s awesome. I believe with Joe Rogan that he’s the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.”

White on Barboza vs. Pettis

“That was my prediction for fight of the night. I agreed with the judges – I gave Barboza the first, Anthony the second and Barboza the third. Anthony looked like he couldn’t pull the trigger. Barboza looked awesome.”

Daniel Cormier “Really Disappointed” He Didn’t Get UFC 197 Version Of Jon Jones

Maybe Jon Jones held back.

Maybe Jon Jones held back.

Or maybe it really was the rust of not fighting for over a year.

Either way, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier sat just inches away from Jones at UFC 197 and could not help but think “what if?”

Cormier was scheduled to defend his title against Jones this past Saturday night before a foot injury sent him to the sidelines. As “DC” watched and discussed the Jones-Ovince Saint Preux bout he could only think about his own chances.

“I’m really disappointed I didn’t fight against him,” Cormier said, during an appearance on the FOX Sports 1 post-fight show. “There’s no way that guy could beat me. I think he did the best he could.

“Ovince did a great job. He showed Jones some things he hasn’t seen before. There will be some questions when Jon gets back home on Monday. I want nothing more than to fight Jon Jones.

If Cormier is cleared by his doctor Monday to return to training, and if Jones is healthy and allowed to fight in July, the two are expected to headline UFC 200.
