ONE flyweight world champion Demetrious Johnson took home gold following his appearance at the IBJJF Masters World Championships in Las Vegas.
Mighty Mouse’ is considered by many to be the greatest flyweight fighter in the history of the sport after capturing world titles in both the UFC and ONE Championship. Currently, Demetrious Johnson reigns as the ONE flyweight champion, but the pound-for-pound great is taking some time away from the cage to test his skills on the mat. This week, Johnson headed to the Las Vegas Convention Center for the biggest jiu-jitsu tournament in the world, the IBJJF Masters.
Johnson swapped out his four-ounce gloves for a gi, competing as a brown belt in the Master 2 division for competitors aged 35 and up.
Per a report from Bloody Elbow, Demetrious Johnson took home gold in his division, winning six matches, including a 10-0 shutout in the tournament finals. Not too shabby for a guy who hasn’t competed in a submission grappling tournament for nearly two decades.
With his run at Worlds now in the books, ‘Mighty Mouse’ will inevitably take a long hard look at what comes next in the world of mixed martial arts. Should he choose to keep things going, Johnson will likely defend his ONE flyweight world title against Kairat Akhmetov inside the ONE Championship Circle. But with nothing left to prove, Johnson could understandably walk away from the sport with his name already etched in the MMA history books.
Pound-for-pound great Demetrious Johnson offered an update on his proposed scrap with fitness guru Bradley Martyn. Pound-for-pound great Demetrious Johnson offered an update on his proposed scrap with fitness guru Bradley Martyn.
In recent months, the popular podcaster and bodybuilder has made a name for himself in the mixed martial arts community by suggesting that he could handle himself in a street fight with some of the sports’ biggest stars, including Nate Diaz, Alex Pereira, Sean O’Malley, and ONE flyweight world champion, Demetrious Johnson.
While most fighters were quick to disregard Martyn’s comments, ‘Mighty Mouse’ was more than willing to call his bluff, suggesting the pair could settle things in a grappling match.
Since then, things have quieted down a bit, but during a recent interview with The Schmo, Demetrious Johnson provided fans with an update on their potential clash.
“I don’t know. Last time I heard he’s trying to fight Aljo and Merab so I have no idea what’s going on with that,” Johnson said. “I think Bradley Martin, one of his schtick in the podcast world is, ‘Hey, do you think I could beat you in a street fight? Yes or now, blah, blah, blah.’ I think he had an offer to fight Mac Perry for some good money so I have no idea.”
Currently, Demetrious Johnson is competing at the World Master IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championships in Las Vegas. Once that is out of the way, he has a few more obligations to take care of but is more than willing to carve out time for Bradley Martyn if the muscle-bound trash-talker is willing to put his money where his mouth is.
“I was gonna go there after my vacation. My wife was like, ‘Babe, really? Are we really going to entertain this? You have jiu-jitsu worlds coming up. Let’s get that done.’ Then I have to cover for my professor. I have to go open a gym. Help Bibiano Fernandes open his gym in Canada,” Johnson continued. “Then after that, we have free time to go out there and do it. So I have prior obligations. More important obligations to attend to instead of just drop out of a plane and go grapple some gentleman that doesn’t even know if he wants to grapple.”
Demetrious Johnson Commends Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili for Refusing to Fight Each Other
Switching gears, Demetrious Johnson offered his take on the traffic jam atop the UFC bantamweight division. With Sean O’Malley now holding the gold, there is a world of options for ‘Sugar’ when it comes to his first title defense slated for December.
But in an interesting turn of events, the top-two ranked contenders, Aljamain Sterling and Merab Dvalishvili, are best friends and as a result, refuse to fight one another. That did not sit well with UFC President Dana White who suggested that if Dvalishvili isn’t willing to fight his friend, maybe he should compete elsewhere.
Demetrious Johnson, on the other hand, commended both fighters for putting their friendship above money and titles.
“I’m happy about that,” Johnson admitted. “I think that friendships and bonds are a lot bigger than winning a world championship. After I spent time, maybe 30 minutes, talking to Aljamain Sterling, I could tell in his soul that friendship means more to him. Because money comes and goes. World championship, that stuff comes and goes and Aljamain Sterling had his opportunity to be a world champion. He’s got four consecutive title defenses I believe.
“Merab hasn’t had that opportunity and for Aljo to give Merab the opportunity to fight for the belt while Aljo sits back and chills, I think that’s great. There are people out there who might think that’s the wrong mindset, but for me, I applaud Aljo for doing that.”
As for who O’Malley should defend his title against first, Demetrious Johnson sees the easy marketability of a rematch between ‘Sugar’ and the only man to beat him inside the Octagon, Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera, but suggested that the shot should go to the man with the biggest win streak.
“I think ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley is in the perfect position to have options,” Johnson said. “I think at the end of the day, it brings fresh air into the division because, yes, he does have a loss to ‘Chito’ Vera so that’s an easy matchup, an easy storyline that they can do. Merab, he’s on a [nine] fight win streak. I think for me, I give more priority to people who are on a win streak. So I think [Merab] deserves the shot over Corey [Sandhagen] and everybody else.”
If you want to be a world champion, Demetrious Johnson believes there’s no easier place to do it than in the world of mixed martial arts. If you want to be a world champion, Demetrious Johnson believes there’s no easier place to do it than in the world of mixed martial arts.
The reigning ONE flyweight world champion is currently taking some time away from the sport to reflect on his future after nearly 20 years of dominance. During the course of his career, Demetrious Johnson has captured both the UFC and ONE flyweight titles while defeating some of the biggest names in the sport. As a result, ‘Mighty Mouse’ is considered by many to be one of, if not the greatest pound-for-pound fighters in the history of the sport.
But that didn’t stop Johnson from kinda-sorta discrediting his own work by suggesting that it was easier to win a world title in MMA than in other sports, specifically boxing.
“That’s the thing about boxing,” Johnson said on TikTok. “Mixed Martial Arts is the easiest sport to become champion in. When you fight boxing, it’s boxing. Every person you fight in boxing is going to be good in boxing… when you fight mixed martial arts, you’re gonna have people who have significant big holes in them, right? You have a guy like Alex Pereira…6-1 and he becomes a champion in mixed martial arts. You can have no wrestling experience and become a world champion. You look at Brock Lesnar, he became a world champion and he had no stand-up experience whatsoever.
“That’s why I feel MMA is the easiest to become a world champion…you can have deficiencies and still become a champion. In boxing, you can’t, you have to be a good boxer to become a world champion, you just have to” (h/t MMA News).
Demetrious Johnson Has Dominated the Competition in Multiple Organizations
Amassing a record of 25-4 since making his pro MMA debut in 2009, Demetrious Johnson quickly rose to prominence by becoming the first-ever UFC flyweight world champion three years later. He successfully defended the title an astonishing 11 times before finally being bested by Henry Cejudo via a split decision in their UFC 227 rematch.
Following the loss, Demetrious Johnson was part of a first-of-its-kind trade that saw ‘Mighty Mouse’ move over to Asia-based promotion ONE Championship in exchange for former ONE and Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren. Since making his move to ONE, Johnson has curated a 6-1 record and came out on top in a trilogy with ex-titleholder Adriano Moraes. Johnson also made history, competing in the promotion’s first hybrid-rules fight with Muay Thai icon Rodtang Jitmuangnon. DJ defeated ‘The Iron Man’ via a second-round rear-naked choke.

After Sean O’Malley’s insane finish at UFC 292, the bantamweight GOAT Demetrious Johnson has released a video breaking down the terrific knockout of Aljamain Sterling.
O’Malley and Sterling threw down after a tumultuous buildup. Sterling claimed he was going to expose O’Malley, while ‘Suga’ begged to differ. Each fighter was confident in their abilities and felt like once locked in the cage, they’d be able to prove themselves against one another.
The first round was extremely competitive. Neither fighter looked to have obtained an edge over the other, and they swapped strikes as they continued to try and figure the other out. When they went back to their corners, neither fighter was chastised much by their team. In fact, each corner felt pretty good about the first round and sent their fighter to see the second without requesting major changes to their strategy.
However, Aljamain Sterling’s corner would give him a bit of advice that would prove to be the difference maker in the fight. Aljo’s team asked him to hold back a bit as far as pursuing O’Malley around the cage goes. They felt that since he was the champion, he shouldn’t be the one rushing in and pushing the action. They wanted him to continue to pressure ‘Suga’, but not lunge forward and over-extend himself to create contact. This would prove to be great advice, and sadly it was something Sterling was unable to follow.
Demetrious Johnson breaks down the Sean O’Malley knockout of Aljamain Sterling
Rushing in with a punch, ‘The Funkmaster’ would overextend himself, landing himself in a predicament where he couldn’t stop his momentum from moving forward. He ran right into a masterfully placed right hand by Sean O’Malley, and Sterling was just lucky it didn’t completely shut the lights out. ‘The Funkmaster’ would crash face first into the canvas, dropped. And the rest was history. Sean O’Malley would follow up the right hand with some vicious ground and pound, and eventually, the referee Marc Goddard would stop the action.
The bantamweight GOAT Demetrious Johnson would give his reaction on Youtube, where he posted a video breaking down the knockout and showing his live reaction to it.
“Ohhhh sh*t!” Demetrious Johnson exclaimed as he watched the knockout. “…He’s out, he’s f****** out. He’s still in. Pass guard, pass guard! Oh fu*k. He’s done… He (Sean O’Malley) found the chin.”
“Had Sterling overextended, and then he found the chin,” Mighty Mouse continued. “That’s what ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley said he was going to do. Find the chin, when you (Sterling) overextend, and that’s what he said he was going to do.”
Johnson would continue to speak about the viral knockout, saying that Aljamain Sterling definitely made a mistake in overextending against somebody looking to primarily counterstrike against him.
“The best thing you could do against somebody looking to counter-strike against you is just walk forward with your hands up,” Demetrious Johnson explained. “Don’t try and punch across distance, walk across distance. When you’re punching across distance and the person is backing up, that’s when you’re going to get dropped. I know, cause that’s how I got dropped by John Dodson… Adriano Moraes… I learned my lesson.”

Former undisputed flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson has scoffed at the clinch game and work of incumbent bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling following a bizarre offer from the Uniondale native ahead of UFC 292 this weekend.
Johnson, the inaugural flyweight champion under the banner of the UFC, currently holds the undisputed flyweight equivalent under the scrutiny of the Chatri Sityodtong-led ONE Championship banner.
Yet to confirm plans on his potential retirement from mixed martial arts competition, Kentucky native, Johnson recently booked an outing in submission grappling, having remained sidelined since landing a trilogy rubber match win over Adriano Moraes in a flyweight title defense earlier this year.
And as for Sterling, the undisputed bantamweight champion is slated to headline UFC 292 this weekend in Boston, Massachusetts, taking on surging challenger, Sean O’Malley at the TD Garden in a fourth attempted successful title defense.
Demetrious Johnson scoffs at Aljamain Sterling’s ability
Breaking down a potential clash with the Serra-Longo MMA staple, Johnson claimed that in a clinch exchange, Sterling leaves a lot to be desired.
“I feel his (Aljamain Sterling) weakness is he has no clinch game,” Demetrious Johnson told MMA Fighting. “Like, I would eat his ass up for breakfast in the clinch game. I feel like rhythm-wise, I move way better than he does on the feet – grappling; he is longer, so I would never let him get my f*cking back, because he’ll lock them f*cking ‘Funkmaster’ legs in a body triangle like he did on Petr Yan, and they’ll have to survive him doing that.”
“The one thing he does that helps to my advantage is that he crosses a distance for me, right,” Demetrious Johnson explained. “He does this [jabs] and a funky-ass kick, and I’m like, ‘Perfect, come here, I wanna show you a thing called a Muay Thai clinch.’ I just feel like I’ll eat him alive in a clinch.”

Ahead of his return to the Octagon at UFC 292 this weekend in Boston, Massachusetts, Aljamain Sterling has made a wholly surprising offer to welcome current ONE Championship kingpin, Demetrious Johnson to the promotion again – if he’s seeking revenge for common-foe turning training partner, Henry Cejudo.
Sterling, the current undisputed bantamweight champion, is slated to headline UFC 292 this weekend at the TD Garden, taking on incoming title chaser, Sean O’Malley in a main event championship bout.
As for Johnson, the former UFC flyweight champion currently holds the ONE Championship flyweight title equivalent, managing to land a title trilogy rubber match win over Brazilian rival, Adriano Moraes back in May in a close decision victory.
Demetrious Johnson receives fight offer from UFC kingpin, Aljamain Sterling
However, according to Sterling, if the decorated flyweight kingpin – who has since trained alongside Cejudo following their double salvo of fights, wants to challenge him for bantamweight spoils, the door is firmly open.
“He’s (Demetrious Johnson) too little, man,” Aljamain Sterling told at a Q&A session ahead of UFC 292. “‘Mighty Mouse’ is great, but he’s too little. There’s a reason he why he lost to [Dominick Cruz], it wasn’t a skill deficiency, it’s size.”
“He’s skilled, but I think father time has passed him a little bit. If he wants this work, try to get some revenge for Henry (Cejudo), I can beat your boy, too,” Aljamain Sterling explained. “So, ‘Mighty Mouse’, where you at?”
Johnson, who still holds an Octagon record for consecutive successful title defenses with a whopping 11 straight championship knockbacks, ended his mind-boggling UFC tenure on the wrong side of a close decision rematch loss to common-foe, Cejudo back in 2018.
