UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor hasn’t competed since winning the 155-pound strap with a brutal second round TKO victory over Eddie Alvarez at this past November’s UFC 205 from New York. The Irishman is currently awaiting the birth of his first child, which could keep him on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

While McGregor’s name is constantly linked to a potential boxing match with Floyd Mayweather in the media, a more likely return fight for him would be a title fight against the winner of March 4’s interim lightweight title fight between top contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.

Nurmagomedov and McGregor have seemed to stir up a bit of a rivalry in recent months, and many feel as if “The Eagle” would present problems for the “Notorious” one given his decorated wrestling background. McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis, however, feels as if Nurmagomedov is ‘too easily hit’:

“He’s too easily hit,” Danis told Submission Radio about Nurmagomedov. “If you saw in the Michael Johnson fight, he was getting like wobbled and rocked every time they were on the feet. So Conor is going to pick him apart like he does all the wrestlers.”

With that being said, the outspoken Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion feels as if McGregor would finish Nurmagomedov in ‘one or two rounds’ if the two were to eventually meet in the Octagon:

“He hits you from everywhere and he kicks you in the stomach,” Danis continued. “And people don’t see those shots on TV, like some of those teep kicks and some of the kicks to the stomach, but those take the wind out of you. And when you basically have to take someone down, it puts a different kind of feeling in your stomach ad in your gut when you have to take the guy down. The guy’s beating you up on the feet, and when you go to the ground he’s elbowing you. So I think Conor puts him away in probably one or two rounds with strikes.”

McGregor’s striking is clearly his bread and butter and he’s proven that it’s amongst the best in the sport today, but many have and likely will continue to question his grappling skills. Danis, however, isn’t worried about Nurmagomedov’s relentless takedown attempts:

“What happened to Eddie doing that though? That’s what people said that Eddie was gonna do that and then he couldn’t even come close to taking Conor down. Nate couldn’t come close to taking Conor down. They all think they’re going to do something until they get in there. I train with the guy every day when I’m out there in Ireland, so I know what he’s capable of, and that’s definitely not going to happen.”

McGregor’s fighting future is almost always unclear and Nurmagomedov will need to get by Ferguson in March, but would you like to see these two 155 pounders do battle later this year?

Dillon Danis: ‘I Feel Like I Can Submit Khabib Nurmagomedov’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA2m4X9y15g

Conor McGregor’s Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) training partner Dillon Danis has already ruffled feathers with a few prominent Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighters. One of them is former UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones, who recent said Danis was being “kind of a douchebag.”

Danis has not been shy about his desire to become a mixed martial arts (MMA) competitor. He said Sage Northcutt would be an “easy fight” for his UFC debut. While Danis hasn’t had an MMA fight, but he is certainly no stranger to the ground game.

Submission Radio recently had the BJJ black belt on the show as a guest. He turned his attention to No. 1 ranked lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov:

“His hands aren’t that good, he’s a grappler. So it would probably be a grappling match and I feel like I can submit him. His jiu-jitsu’s good, but it’s not very technical. He’s a little sloppy. So I feel like I would be able to finish him. But that could happen. But I’m not stupid either. I’m not gonna go to the UFC and probably fight Khabib in my first fight. But you know, down the road that would be a good match up I feel. He’s not going to be undefeated anymore if he fights Conor, so I’ll be fine to give him another loss.”

“The Eagle” will collide with Tony Ferguson at UFC 209 for the interim 155-pound title. The winner is likely to clash with Conor McGregor in a unification bout later this year.

Danis claims his issues with Nurmagomedov stem from “The Eagle’s” alleged belief that BJJ is easier than Sambo.

“Me and (Nurmagomedov) had a little bit of a beef when I was younger. When I was sixteen or seventeen, he used to come to a place in Jersey that I used to train at. His manager was the coach of my gym and he used to wear the stupid shirt that said, “if Sambo was easy it would be called jiu-jitsu,” or something. I said okay let’s do it, let’s do a grappling match then and see how easy jiu-jitsu is. And that never came to fruition. I don’t know what happened, if they told him or they didn’t tell him, but I told the guys, you tell him that I said let’s see how jiu-jitsu is and I’ll show him. So it’s a stupid shirt he wears.”

Jon Jones: Dillon Danis is ‘Kind of Being A Douchebag’

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight title holder Jon Jones made a successful grappling debut against Dan Henderson at Submission Underground 2. “Bones” was able to submit “Hendo” with an arm triangle choke.

After the win, Jones teased a future grappling match with Chael Sonnen. “Bones” was called out by former middleweight king Luke Rockhold and Dillon Danis. While Rockhold’s challenge was blunt, it was Danis’ call out that irked Jones. Danis, who trains with Conor McGregor, told Jones, “beg me” in reference to a grappling match.

Jones told Fight Hub TV (via MMAMania.com) that he has no interest in facing Danis after his comments.

“He’s a lot smaller than me, so already going into that grappling match there is not much to gain. I just beat Henderson and I was a lot bigger than him. I think right now people would like to see me go up against somebody that is bigger than me just to have a different challenge. But him telling me to beg him was just kind of a douchy thing to do. I felt like I was already in a situation where I had not much to gain, not many people know who he is. I just felt he was kind of being a douchebag and I’m not even going to entertain you.”

Right now, Jones is serving a one-year suspension for his drug test fiasco that canceled his title rematch with Daniel Cormier at UFC 200. Jones will be allowed to return to mixed martial arts (MMA) competition in July. Obviously, the suspension does not prevent him from participating in grappling bouts.

Danis will meet AJ Agazarm at Submission Underground 3. The other grappling matches set for the card are Jeff Glover vs. Chad Mendes, Gordan Ryan vs. Joe Baize, Hector Lombard vs. Garry Tonon, and Jeff Monson vs. Ronny Markes.

McGregor’s BJJ Training Partner Believes Sage Northcutt Would Be An ‘Easy Fight’

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) stalwart Dillon Danis is no stranger to headlines. Danis has had his share of media attention despite not stepping foot inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Octagon. If you didn’t know him for his championship wins in Abu Dhabi, World No Gi, and Pan American, then you knew him when current UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor enlisted his services for UFC 202.

Danis raised some eyebrows when he told Ariel Helwani he’d be willing to fight Nate Diaz in mixed martial arts (MMA) back in August. You can see the interview from that edition of The MMA Hour above.

It’s no secret that Danis is confident in his abilities. The BJJ black belt has his sights set on the UFC despite not having an MMA bout on his resume. He visited Helwani once again (via MMAFighting) to discuss his future plans and potential opponents. One name that stuck out to him was Sage Northcutt.

“That would be an easy fight (against Northcutt). Just to get in there. That would be a good, easy one to just get out of the way. Beat someone that has a decent name.”

Northcutt has been under the microscope following his submission loss to Mickey Gall at UFC on FOX 22. He’s lost two of his last three bouts, and his win at UFC 200 against Enrique Marin was anything but “Super.” With both his losses coming by submission, it’s hard to imagine his next bout will be against a BJJ master.

While the BJJ skills of Danis can’t be denied, many questions loom. Fans and analysts wonder if he can grasp the stand-up, wrestling, fight IQ, and many other aspects of professional MMA. One thing that Danis has going for him is time. He’s only 23 and trains with the No. 2 ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Danis likes his chances and says he can make an impact immediately.

“I honestly think I can go my first fight in the UFC, and I think I would dominate. I say that 100 percent being fact. I’m not a stupid person and I know what I’m capable of. I know who I’ve trained with, and I know what I’ve seen.”

Dillon Danis has gained fame due to the fact that he has helped train UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, but he also happens to be one of the most decorated jiu-jitsu players in the world. While his success in BJJ speaks for itself, Danis has showed some signs indicating that he could potentially make the jump over to mixed martial arts (MMA) at some point.

The Brazilian has received an offer to compete at a Cage Fury Fighting Championship event next year, but he recently told MMAFighting.com that he plans on going right to the big leagues:

“I honestly think I can go my first fight in the UFC, and I think I would dominate,” Danis said. “I say that 100 percent being fact. I’m not a stupid person and I know what I’m capable of. I know who I’ve trained with, and I know what I’ve seen.”

If he were to get a chance in the UFC, Danis also has a name on his mind, as he feels as if a bout with rising prospect Sage Northcutt would be an ‘easy’ fight:

“That would be an easy fight,” Danis said. “Just to get in there. That would be a good, easy one to just get out of the way. Beat someone that has a decent name.”

In addition to Northcutt, Danis, 23-years-old, has also exchanged words with McGregor’s rival Nate Diaz, specifically after Diaz and McGregor fought for a second time at UFC 202 last August. Danis has said that he’d fight Diaz and according to the Brazilian, the fact that Diaz is a highly experienced veteran ‘means nothing’:

“That means nothing,” Danis said. “It doesn’t mean anything. I’ve always respected Nate. I think Nate is an awesome fighter. But when he called me out, that’s when we have a problem.”

As far as what weight he would compete at, Danis took a page out of McGregor’s book when he implied that it simply wouldn’t make a difference:

“I can dominate any weight class,” Danis said.

Would you like to see the Brazilian compete in the Octagon?
