Bantamweight contender Marlon Moraes has called for a fight with former 135lb champion Dominick Cruz. ‘The Dominator’ returned to the cage for the first time in almost four years to face Henry Cejudo at UFC 249, losing the fight via TKO inside two rounds.

Speaking to MMA Fighting Moraes revealed he is hoping to face off against Cruz despite the fact he is ranked eleventh in the division and coming off consecutive losses.

“I have a lot of respect for him,” Moraes said. “In my opinion, he’s one of the best of all time. The timing’s perfect. He just come off a title shot, he lost but Dominick’s a legend. Everyone wants to fight him. I thought maybe they were going to have him fight Aldo but he has no opponent and he says he doesn’t want to retire. Why not fight him?

“I’m the No. 1 [ranked], if I’m going to risk it, why not risk against a guy like him? Hopefully he takes the fight. If he doesn’t take it, I’ll fight anybody but hopefully he takes it. It’s a big fight and it could put one of us in a very good position.”

“I don’t give a f**k about the rankings,” Moraes said. “That’s Dominick Cruz out there. I want to fight him. It makes a lot of sense. Put us together and it’s going to be a great fight. I’m telling you guys I’m going out there to finish. I’m going to finish my next opponent.

The Brazilian knockout artist went on to say he is confident finishing Cruz and capturing the bantamweight title in the near future, he said.

“I think I’ve got all the weapons to beat him. He’s a very good matchup for me. I’m looking forward to fighting him and finish him. I want to finish Dominick Cruz and show who is the best 135er in the world.”

“I want to get in there and I want to perform. I want to finish somebody. I want to make a statement and I want to show to everybody I’m next. I want to fight and I want that championship fight again and I want to become UFC bantamweight champion.”

UFC Bantamweight Marlon “Chito” Vera believes he should face former champion Dominick Cruz in his next fight.

Speaking to Ryan Galloway in a LowKick MMA exclusive, Vera explained why this matchup makes the most sense for him following his recent controversial loss to Song Yadong.

“I think Dominick Cruz paper wise make the most sense. We are like two or three rankings apart, he’s coming off a loss, I’m coming off a loss. I feel that’s the perfect fight to make right now.

Vera also shared that he would be interested to face Uriah Faber should he decide to fight again.

“If Uriah have the balls to actually fight for real instead of just making a show for weigh-ins and acting like a guy that will do it any time, he won’t. He’s broke. his last fight he got destroyed and I’m sure he don’t want to get that feeling again because he don’t train anymore. But if he got the balls to do it one more time, I’ll put him out for sure. I will send a message to him ‘Hey you don’t belong here anymore’. But that’s not the main focus, he is doing it for the social media. He have a team, he have a name so he has to do it so often just to stay relevant so I get it.”

When asked, Chito shared how he believes a fight with Cruz would play out.

“I think I put the pressure on him, and I break him. I’m a younger better version and I still have enough tools. His wrestling is pretty good so if this fight goes to the ground he’s not going to hold me there I think I can tap him out too, I’m pretty confident that I can beat him up in the stand-up and on the ground so I hope that fight happens.”

At this stage, neither Vera nor Cruz has scheduled opponents or dates for their respective returns.

Urijah Faber doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with Dominick Cruz, but he can sympathize with the latter’s frustration about his latest defeat.

Cruz returned to action at UFC 249 last weekend as he looked to reclaim the bantamweight title from Henry Cejudo. However, after getting dropped by a knee and receiving a number of unanswered shots while he was trying to get up, referee Keith Peterson called an end to the contest with just seconds remaining in the second round.

Cruz protested immediately and was not happy with the call. He went on to accuse Peterson of smelling like cigarettes and alcohol after the fight which has drawn plenty of criticism from many in the combat sports world, though Cruz hasn’t backed down from his comments as of yet.

Faber has endured his own problems with early stoppages in the past and believes some leeway should be given, especially in big championship fights.

“The referees are in there to do their job and save guys from taking too much damage,” Faber said during a post-fight scrum at UFC Florida last night (via Bloody Elbow). “But at the end of the day, especially in world championship fights when you’re dealing with guys that are future Hall-of-Famers and multiple time world champions, we want to remove all doubt. We want to know, like, ‘I had no more chance.’

“So I feel for him on that. I feel like he could’ve still had a chance, and that’s always the part that irks you. So I can understand his frustration.”

As for Cruz’s allegation, Faber finds it hard to believe Peterson was inebriated.

“I doubt that Keith Peterson was drunk,” Faber said. “He might’ve been sweating some alcohol and definitely smelling some cigarettes, but I don’t think he was drunk. He was trying to look after Dom.”

Faber: Cruz Looked Good At UFC 249

That said, he does believe his old rival looked good despite competing for the first time since December 2016.

“I thought he looked good,” Faber added. “You never know how people are ageing, everybody’s different, but he’s got a style that lends to a long career.

“It makes me more and more impressed with Henry Cejudo, what a champion. It’s hard to take him serious sometimes, but you’re forced to when he keeps doing what he’s doing.”

Cruz ‘Loving’ UFC Florida Referee

Dominick Cruz threw some shade Keith Peterson’s way during UFC Florida last night.

Cruz made headlines at UFC 249 last week when he accused Peterson of smelling like alcohol and cigarettes after he felt the referee stopped his bantamweight title fight with Henry Cejudo too early.

“That was an early stoppage, 100 percent – I’m positive of it,” he said. “I wish there was a way to keep these refs a little more responsible sometimes. The guy smelled like alcohol and cigarettes, so who knows what he was doing. Definitely (he did). I wish they drug tested them.”

While fighters tend to make excuses in the heat of the moment, Cruz didn’t back down — in fact, he doubled down on his accusations a few days later.

And when another referee in Dan Miragliotta let the action go on in the main event between Alistair Overeem and Walt Harris at UFC Florida when other referees may have stopped the fight at certain points, Cruz decided to give him props on social media.

“Loving this ref send him a gift basket ?

As of now, Peterson is yet to publicly respond to Cruz’s allegations.

However, there wouldn’t be a way to prove he was drinking regardless, especially as other referees such as Herb Dean refuted the claims.
