Donald Brashear played 1,025 games in the NHL.

He was one of the most feared enforcers during his days with the Vancouver Canucks, Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals and New York Rangers, racking up 2,634 penalty minutes while scoring only 205 points.

In January of 2010, Brashear was named the NHL enforcer of the decade by The Hockey News.

On Saturday, June 4, Brashear fought in his first professional MMA bout, scoring a 21 second TKO win over Mathieu Bergeron at the Ringside 11 Event in Quebec City.

Brashear told cbcsports.ca that he plans on returning to the cage. He also stated, “As soon as I got in there [the cage], I was comfortable.”

Video: Notorious Hockey Enforcer Donald Brashear Wins MMA Debut

Still got it

Let’s all be completely honest for a minute: If Patrick Cote didn’t get all Rick James on Todd Brown at the weigh-ins, last night’s Ringside 11 in Quebec would have completely flown under our radars. That would have been unfortunate. Aside from a pair of UFC cast-offs fighting to remain relevant, the event also featured the MMA debut of the notorious hockey enforcer Donald Brashear. At 39 years old, Brashear probably isn’t going to be the next Steve Bosse, but at least he is not the next Jose Canseco.

Brashear fought with the same aggression he displayed in the NHL, immediately rushing his opponent, Mathieu Bergeron and dropping him. From there, Brashear just kept punching while Bergeron flopped around the cage trying to get back to his feet. Bergeron eventually laid out, bringing the stoppage only 21 seconds into the fight. MMAFighting.com also reports that after the fight, Brashear said that he would fight MMA again.

Video after the jump. For the record, I’m not exactly sure who shot this footage, or who decided the video needed a DMX song instead of the actual crowd noise. Whoever you are, you may want to shake your camera a lot less next time.

Oh, and in case you were curious, Patrick Cote took home a unanimous decision over Todd Brown.  Apparently, he is now also the Ringside MMA Middleweight Champion. Oh well, Todd Brown: Nice guys finish last.

Donald Brashear was a feared enforcer during an 18-year career in the National Hockey League, but now he can add another descriptor to his resume: mixed martial artist.

The 39-year-old earned a victory in his debut bout on Saturday night, needing just 21 seconds to defeat Mathieu Bergeron.

Fighting as a southpaw, Brashear rocked Bergeron early with a left hand to the chin and looked to finish on the ground with a series of strikes from the top. Bergeron momentarily worked free and tried find a way back to his feet, but stumbled across the cage and Brashear followed him, landed several more punches and the referee called an end to the action.

Video of the fight is below.

Brashear’s debut came as the co-main event of the Ringside 11 event in Quebec. Bergeron was also fighting for the first time.

Afterward, Brashear, who signed a three-fight deal with the promotion, said he would fight again.

In the night’s main event, former UFC middleweight star Patrick Cote won his second straight bout since leaving MMA’s biggest promotion. Cote defeated Todd Brown via unanimous decision to improve to 15-7.

During an 18-year career in the National Hockey League, Donald Brashear earned a reputation as one of the sport’s top enforcers due to his willingness to rip off his gloves and throw down. Now, though, he is getting to strap on some gloves and change his fighting arena from a rink to a cage when he makes his mixed martial arts debut at Ringside MMA 11 on June 4.

The 39-year-old will face an opponent yet to be determined in his adopted hometown of Quebec City, Quebec, and his first prizefight will come on very short notice. During a recent edition of The MMA Hour, Brashear said that he decided to take the fight after being approached by the event’s promoter just around one month ago, and with no previous MMA experience. If that sounds like a rash decision, Brashear can’t exactly argue.

“The most I know is from the people I see fighting,” he said. “The only knowledge of fighting I have is boxing and playing in the NHL, so I’ve got a lot of stuff to learn.”
