Leon Edwards Goes Off On ‘Deteriorating’ Donald Cerrone’s Style

Leon Edwards isn’t a fan of Donald Cerrone’s approach towards fighting:

Longtime UFC veteran Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone is one of the biggest fan favorites in the mixed martial arts (MMA) community.

Its been a rough time for Cerrone lately, however, as he has lost three of his last four Octagon appearances – two of those loses coming by way of TKO. Now, fresh off a first-round victory over up-and-comer Yancy Medeiros, Cerrone is looking to take out yet another young contender.

His upcoming opponent Leon Edwards is one of the more promising 170-pound fighters on the UFC’s roster. The Birmingham native is on a five-fight win streak. He’s taking a huge step up in competition when he main events UFC Singapore tomorrow morning (Sat. June 23, 2018) against former lightweight title challenger Cerrone.

Despite watching Cerrone as a young man, the 26-year-old told MMA Fighting that he’s not much of a fan of Cowboy’s:

“He’s a legend of the sport, but I wouldn’t say I was a fan of his,” Edwards said. “Just [because] his approach to fighting, I think it’s more like a journeyman. I don’t think he cares whether he wins or loses. He just shows up and as long as he fights, that’s good for him.

“To me, I think his approach is more like a journeyman approach. You’re just there to fight, you’re not there to win or lose. I don’t think it bothers him, whether he wins or loses anyway — that’s his approach. But my approach is I want to win every fight and I want to be a world champion. That’s my aim in the sport.”

Cerrone’s chin seems to have dwindled in recent years, which isn’t surprising given how frequently the Jackson Wink MMA product fights. With all that being said, Edwards believes that Cerrone’s best days are in the rear-view mirror:

“I think so,” Edwards said. “He’s a 36-year-old man now and he took a lot of damage in his last, what, six or seven outings. He took a lot of damage. We’ve watched his last four or five fights, and honestly there’s a blueprint there, and I can [execute] it. As far as why he’s really struggling, I don’t know.

“Welterweight is probably just too big for him, or his chin is deteriorating. It could be anything. Like I said, he’s a 36-year-old man. His style of fighting, the way he’s fought, it’s been the same realistically for, what, his last 10 or 15 fights? I don’t think there’s much different in his game, really, that’s changed over the last 10 or 15 fights, from what I’ve seen anyway.

“So people are probably just getting used to what he does and what he throws, and everything else. There’s no [mystery] there.”

Edwards 100 percent believes he’s the better fighter heading into his clash with Cerrone, and is looking to make a statement to the UFC and the welterweight division.

If all goes according to plan, Edwards hopes to receive the same treatment his fellow Englishman Darren Till received after his own victory over Cowboy:

“I think I’m the better fighter,” Edwards said. “My striking, I feel my striking is there. I’m well-rounded, so I feel like wherever the fight goes, I’ll be the better man on the night, so it’s just me going out there and proving it now.

“I feel I need a finish in this fight to prove my case,” Edwards added. “To get to where I really want to get to, I feel a decision won’t be enough for me. So I’m going out there for the finish and having my way.”

You’ll have to get bright and early to watch it, but tomorrow’s (Sat., June 23, 2018) UFC Fight Night 132 from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore, features some solid MMA action from Asia.

Obviously, the main attraction is the headlining bout between longtime contender Donald Cerrone and rising welterweight Leon Edwards, a potential changing-of-the-guard of the fight for Edwards and another chance for Cerrone to prove the young upstarts can’t claim he’s over the hill just yet.

There’s been a decent amount of trash talk between the two heading into the bout, and the two squared off at today’s UFC Singapore weigh-ins. What transpired was a somewhat strange scene, as Cerrone looked down and shook his head while Edwards appeared supremely pumped. Check it out here:

Cowboy Isn’t Impressed By ‘Arrogant’ Leon Edwards

Things will be very interesting when these two share the Octagon.

The post Cowboy Isn’t Impressed By ‘Arrogant’ Leon Edwards appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Cowboy Cerrone is not impressed by Leon Edwards.

The former UFC lightweight title challenger will headline UFC Singapore this weekend (Sat., June 23, 2018) against the rising welterweight contender.

Edwards seems extremely confident in his ability heading into the fight, but Cowboy isn’t too fond of Edwards confidence – or “arrogance” as Cerrone calls it. In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Cerrone admits that he’s not impressed with the 26-year-old:

“He’s a real arrogant, cocky motherf*cker, to be honest with you,” Cerrone said. “So, I don’t know, we’ll see, but I’m not too impressed with him at all. We were out doing a media tour, he was just really vocal and angry the whole time, just wanted to be mad and had nothing but just rude-ass comments to say.

“I was like, damn, man, I’m a f*cking veteran in this sport. You’re talking about you’re just going to steamroll me, and I’m old, you’re new. And it’s like, damn, okay, sure. I told him, ‘You’re gonna have to go home and tell your momma an old, slow dude beat your ass.’

“That’s alright though. He’s not that bold, he’s not talking sh*t to my face like that. I’ll beat the f*ck outta anybody. I’ll f*cking kick the sh*t outta you, let’s not get that confused.”

Stars such as Colby Covington, Chael Sonnen, Conor McGregor, and so many more have made a name for themselves off of trash talk.

Edwards seems to be following suit, yet Cerrone has advised the young Birmingham native against such an approach, however, he doesn’t seem to be taking to it:

“[He’s trying to] convince himself,” Cerrone said. “He’s saying that I’m trying to become his friend because that way I feel like the beating is just going to be less. I was like, oh my God, you’re so weird.

“I tried to explain to him, I said, ‘Look, man. The Colby Covington approach, you look like a f*cking asshole. You look like a complete f*cking dick. Why would you want that? Why would you want people to think that you’re a dick? Be a good guy. Why would you want to be the angry fighter?’ Like, sure, fighting is what we do in our sport, but, dude, we’re also cool people.

“Conor (McGregor) is a whole different demon, that son of a b*tch went in there and did it and backed it all up. That’s a whole different animal of its own. But Colby [and others are] trying to emulate it and I don’t know what the hell’s going on.”
