Former UFC lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone has been on quite the tear since making the jump up in weight to 170 pounds, winning all four of his welterweight bouts via finish.

Now “Cowboy” will take on another tough test in the UFC’s welterweight division when he faces No. 12-ranked Jorge Masvidal in the co-main event of UFC on FOX 23 this Saturday night (January 28, 2017). Masvidal called out Cerrone following his first-round TKO win over Jake Ellenberger last month, and Cowboy was happy to oblige.

Masvidal recently joined the Fight Society podcast (via FOX Sports) to discuss his upcoming contest with Cerrone, claiming he’s just happy to have finally landed a top 10 opponent after many obstacles:

“It’s just a dude with a number by (his name) is what I’ve been gunning for. I’ve had so many close calls of getting top 10 dudes, both of us signing bout agreements and somehow the fight doesn’t go down,” Masvidal said. “That’s happened four times that I’ve signed a bout agreement against a top 10 dude.

“They sign the bout agreement, they put out the posters, the UFC announces the fight coming soon, gives us the date, the arena, buy the tickets online — for some reason the fight doesn’t come to fruition. It’s (expletive) nuts.”

‘Gamebred’ stated that Cerrone has taken ‘food from my plate’ on two different instances, as fighters who were scheduled to throw down with him were pulled to fight Cowboy instead at a different time. One most recent example of this came after Matt Brown was originally scheduled to meet Masvidal but ‘Immortal’ was then moved to the UFC 206 pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event against Cowboy, something that has obviously gotten Masvial fired up for this weekend:

“I feel like I’m going to break his face. I’m telling you I have a lot of ill will towards him for different reasons,” Masvidal explained. “He’s taken literally food from my plate on two different occasions of those fights that got pulled from me. They pulled fighters from me who were already signed and ready to fight me and I was ready to fight them and they give it to him.

“I know it’s not him intentionally doing that but somebody’s got to pay. That somebody’s name is “Cowboy”. He’s got to pay with interest.”

Given that the fight will take place in Cerrone’s backyard of Denver, Colorado, Masvidal said he knows he needs to finish the fight as he doesn’t want to go to the judges’ scorecards in enemy territory:

“I’m not going to out-point this dude. I know I’m not going to win a decision in Denver, this (expletive) white dude from Denver. It’s not going to happen,” Masvidal said. “I don’t win decisions in Florida. It’s not going to happen, I’m going to beat this guy in his own home state.

“So I’m going to go in there and execute him so he doesn’t have to worry about the split decisions on this one, I promise you.”

When they share the Octagon this weekend, Masvidal believes his adversary will be searching for a way out once the contest gets difficult, something he claims Cerrone frequently does but he has never done in his fighting career:

“I don’t see him at any point having the lead in the fight. I just see him like he’s done in the past saying ‘you know what maybe it’s not my day today and look for a way out’,” Masvidal said. “You can look at all my losses, don’t go to my wins, just go to my losses and look at my eyes and see if I’ve ever found a way out of a fight. If I ever even thought to tap or let me not engage and just be real defensive and try to survive. That’s never happened in my career.

“You can see in his fights where it’s happened multiple times. So that’s how I feel.”

Come fight night, Masvidal will finally get the opportunity to unleash all his pent-up anger towards Cowboy, and he closed by saying he plans to send his opponent to the hospital in a helicopter:

“To tell you the truth, I wish the fight was right now. I just want to break this guy’s (expletive) face,” Masvidal said. “This is not a sparring match. You’re not going to see me touching gloves.

“You’re going to see me getting after it and either I’ll be leaving to the hospital in an ambulance or he’ll be leaving to the ambulance in a helicopter because it’s going to be a (expletive) fight. I’m coming to fight and I’m coming to break his (expletive) face.”

Former UFC lightweight title challenger and current No. 5-ranked welterweight Donald Cerrone has been on quite the tear since making the jump up to 170-pounds, having amassed a four-fight win streak against some hefty competition.

Cowboy most recently comes off of a crushing third round knockout victory over ‘The Immortal’ Matt Brown in the co-main event of UFC 206, making quite the statement and propelling himself into the title contention conversation. In typical Cerrone-like fashion the JacksonWink product wanted to make a quick turnaround back into the Octagon, and will now take on Jorge Masvidal in the co-main event of UFC on FOX 23 next week (Saturday, January 28, 2017).

Recently Cerrone spoke to FOX Sports to discuss the current state of the 170-pound division, and would love to compete on the same card as Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson in their welterweight title bout at UFC 209:

“I just care about keep on fighting. I know they’ve got the (Tyron) Woodley-(Stephen) Thompson fight coming in March. I wouldn’t mind getting a No. 1 contender fight in March also maybe on the same card and then fight the winner of those two,” Cerrone told FOX Sports.

“Just more about keep on fighting. I don’t want to sit and wait. I just like to stay busy.”

Currently above Cerrone in the welterweight rankings sit former champion Robbie Lawler and No. 3-ranked Demian Maia, who both interest Cowboy for a potential throw-down inside the Octagon for a title eliminator. The name that seemed to light a fire under Cerrone, however, was the Brazilian jiu jitsu specialist Maia who is content to wait for his shot at the 170-pound title after having racked up an impressive six-fight win streak.

Being known as a fighter who doesn’t like to take much time off, Maia’s decision to wait for the winner of Woodley and Thompson for his shot at the welterweight throne seems to have rubbed Cerrone the wrong way:

“Whoever, if I could fight in March. I know the title fight, they’re going to be fighting in March so we’ll have to get a No. 1 contender,” Cerrone said. “Hopefully, Demian Maia will (expletive) want to pull the trigger and not just keep waiting or Robbie (Lawler).

“Whoever’s above us. I don’t even care. I don’t (expletive) give a (expletive).”

As for a fight with Lawler, Cowboy had already agreed to fight ‘Ruthless’ at UFC 205 in New York, but the former champion decided to withdraw from the bout due to health concerns. Now that Lawler has had a bit more time to recover from his knockout loss to Woodley back in July, Cerrone says he’d gladly accept a bout with him again:

“(Nick) Diaz turned Robbie down. (Expletive) Maia turned Robbie down. You know who didn’t turn (expletive) Robbie down? Me,” Cerrone said.

“I said (expletive) yeah, bring that (expletive) on. That name don’t scare me none. I love Robbie but (expletive) come on.”

Cerrone says if he can secure the welterweight title in his next two fights, he’ll gladly defend the strap three times before year’s end, but we’ll have to see how things play out for the UFC veteran:

“Let’s do it,” Cerrone said. “If I could get six fights in 2017, my coaches would be happy, I’ll be happy and we’ll get a title fight and defend that (expletive) three times, I’ll be good to go!”

“If I could, I would,” Cerrone said without hesitation.”

Cerrone will meet Masvidal in the co-main event of UFC on FOX 23 from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado next weekend (Saturday, January 28, 2017).

In our co-main event of last night’s (Saturday December 10, 2016) UFC 206 pay-per-view (PPV) from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, No. 5-ranked welterweight Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone went to war with ‘The Immortal’ Matt Brown.

Cerrone has been on an absolute tear since making the jump up to 170 pounds from the UFC’s talent-stacked lightweight division, finishing all of his contests at welterweight since making his debut in February.

Brown came into the contest riding a two-fight losing streak and looking to return to his winning ways with a massive win over Cerrone, potentially putting him back on track to his ultimate goal of one day becoming a UFC champion.

Both men landed a plethora of massive shots throughout the bout’s progression, however, it was ‘Cowboy’s’ big head kick in the third round of the contest that would send ‘Immortal’ down to the canvas unconscious. Cerrone would extend his win streak to four as he remains undefeated in welterweight.

UFC 206 went down from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada tonight (Saturday, December 10, 2016). Fans were treated to a truly unforgettable night of action.

To no one’s surprise, Cub Swanson and Dooho Choi were awarded matching $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses for their legendary encounter on the pay-per-view main card. While it was officially made Fight of the Night at the post-fight press conference, many are predicting that it stole Fight of the Year honors as well. The two power-punching featherweights bludgeoned each other over fifteen minutes of increasingly dramatic and draw-dropping action. Both men would be rocked during the battle, but both refused to back down, refused to go away. Swanson did just a bit more down the stretch to capture a unanimous verdict from the judges, but the young ‘Korean Superboy’ figures to raise his stock significantly, even in defeat.

Elsewhere in main card action, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone captured one of two Performance of the Night bonuses for his climactic head kick finish of nemesis Matt Brown in the co-headliner. The two welterweights engaged in their own blood-and-guts battle in which each man hit the deck during the first ten minutes. On another night, Cerrone and Brown may have taken home Fight of the Night honors. Cerrone sealed the victory – and his own bonus check – with crushing walk-off head kick knockout a minute into round three. Cerrone has finished four straight opponents since moving up the scales to the welterweight division.

Finally, Lando Vannata banked his own $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus check in the Fight Pass featured prelim. The Jackson-Wink product performed the night’s first walk-off head kick knockout, but this was of the spinning wheel kick variety. His heel met John Makdessi’s chin and separated him from consciousness in the first round of their lightweight tussle. It was the second resounding performance for Vannata in two UFC appearances.

UFC 206 emanated from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada tonight (Saturday, December 10, 2016). It was an event for the ages.

In the main event, Max Holloway defeated Anthony Pettis via TKO to become the interim featherweight champion, lining up a matchup with Jose Aldo. The two strikers sniped and peppered one another throughout the abbreviated five-round affair. In the end, though, Holloway’s relentless pressure, greater volume, and perhaps Pettis’ compromised gas tank led to a victory for the Hawaiian.

The co-main event featured welterweight action fighters Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone and Matt ‘The Immortal’ Brown duking it out for just over two rounds. Both men were dropped inside the first ten mintues in a back-and-forth battle. ‘Cowboy’ brought the proceedings to a close about a minute into the third round when he landed a head kick flush to Brown’s jaw, dropping him where he stood. No follow-up punches were necessary. The win marked Cerrone’s fourth straight victory – and fourth straight finish – since moving to welterweight earlier this year.

But the unquestioned fight of the night – and a serious contender for Fight of the Year – came from two other featherweights on the main card in Cub Swanson and Dooho Choi. The two engaged in a slobberknocker of epic proportions, each finding the mark multiple times with seeming fight-ending blows. Despite each being badly hurt at various points, neither man would give an inch. They banged it out until the very end, with Swanson doing just a bit more down the stretch to take a unanimous decision. The violence gods were satisfied.
