2016 has been a hugely successful year for the UFC in many respects, but while fans have been treated to some of the biggest fights and most stacked cards in the history of the sport, the age old problem of major fights falling through has continued to be a thorn in the promotion’s flesh.

In this article we’ll take a look back at the 10 biggest fights to have fallen by the wayside in the past 12 months, and it’s a star-studded selection of mouth-watering match-ups that includes no less than five title-fights that slipped through the net.

In all, a remarkable eight of the 10 fights listed were actually scheduled to headline an event, and with some of them falling through on anything from a few days to a few weeks notice, it’s something of a minor miracle that, for the most part, the UFC has been able to roll with the punches and come out on top in the end.

That being said, the ramifications of some of these bouts being canceled has been massive at times, and in some cases has led to not only the fight being called off, but entire events being razed to the ground in one fell swoop, costing the UFC a fortune in the process and robbing fans of the chance to see their heroes in action at pivotal moments in their careers.

Werdum Velasquez II Poster

Fabricio Werdum vs. Cain Velasquez II

Fabricio Werdum delivered something of an upset at UFC 188 in Mexico City in 2015 when he submitted reigning heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez with a guillotine choke.

Velasquez had been uncharacteristically lethargic during the fight, with his camp later suggesting that he’d been caught out by the unusually high altitude in the city, which helped their push for an immediate rematch, with fans curious to see if ‘Sea-level Cain’ would fare any better against the Brazilian.

The second fight was booked to headline what was at the time known as UFC 196 on February 2nd in Las Vegas during Super Bowl weekend, but disaster struck when Velasquez was forced out with a back injury on less than two weeks notice.

Werdum then also withdrew from the show due to injuries of his own, leaving the UFC in a very awkward spot that eventually forced them to cancel UFC 196 as a pay-per-view event, instead putting the remaining fight cards on free TV as ‘UFC Fight Night 82.’

It’s a move that would that would cost them millions of dollars, and that’s before factoring in the costly and confusing process of having to renumber all their other forthcoming numbered PPV and ‘Fight Night’ events due to the cancelation.

Meanwhile, with Velaquez out of action for several months, Werdum would instead go on to fight Stipe Miocic at UFC 198 in May and promptly lost his title by way of a first round TKO stoppage.

Werdum vs. Velasquez II will now finally go ahead at UFC 207 on December 30th, though this time there won’t be a title on the line.

UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor will likely be facing his toughest test to date when he moves up in weight to challenge reigning 155-pound kingpin Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of March 5’s UFC 196 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Up until this point, McGregor has backed up his brash and relentless trash talk with seven consecutive Octagon wins including six by way of T/KO. The Irishman is also coming off of a shocking 13-second demolition of former 145-pound boss Jose Aldo at last December’s UFC 194

With that being said, dos Anjos has looked like a different animal as of late, winning five straight including multiple one-sided beatings over the likes of former champions Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis, as well as highly-touted contenders Nate Diaz and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

Despite his much improved striking, it’s important to note that the Brazilian’s strengths lie in the area of McGregor’s perceived weakness: wresting and grappling. The Irishman was repeatedly taken down by Chad Mendes at UFC 189 before scoring a second-round knockout.

Dos Anjos has been known to inflict relentless pressure and wrestling on his opponents, and possesses a third degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

As the event nears closer, it appears as if McGregor has been working on his ground game, releasing a video earlier today (February 14, 2016) via his official Instagram account of his latest sparring session which featured some ground and pound work:

Roses are red, violets are blue, here is some precision ground and pound for you! #HappyValentinesDay

A video posted by Conor McGregor Official (@thenotoriousmma) on

While the video looks to just be some light training, one would have to believe that McGregor has worked endlessly on his grappling. Although he’s predicted an early knockout, he obviously won’t be able to let his strikes go if he can’t keep the fight standing.

Do you see the Irishman making history on March 5th?

Dana White Doesn’t See How McGregor Beats dos Anjos

UFC featherweight kingpin the “Notorious” Conor McGregor is moving up next month for his toughest test to date, as he’s set to take on lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of March 5’s UFC 196 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Looking to become the first man in promotional history to simultaneously hold two titles, McGregor has a tough task ahead, and UFC president Dana White seems to have trouble seeing how the Irishman will get the job done:

“I don’t see how he wins this fight,” White told At The Buzzer. “He’s the 145-pound champion. He can stay in his own lane.”

Dos Anjos has indeed been on a tear as of late, winning five straight bouts all in dominant fashion. As White put it, the “Notorious” one is jumping up in weight to take on an “animal”

“This guy is moving up to 155 to take on an animal, who destroyed Cowboy Cerrone, destroyed Anthony Pettis. And this isn’t boxing, where you move up two or three pounds. You move up 15 pounds!”

Check out the full video below:

Although the jump from featherweight to lightweight is only ten pounds, White may have a point as many have deemed dos Anjos a terrible stylistic matchup for McGregor.

Aside from his world class submission skills, the Brazilian has used pressure wrestling, and much improved striking to run a demolition course through the lightweight division.

While the knockout artist in McGregor may very well be one of the best strikers in mixed martial arts (MMA), his ground game has always remained a question mark.

That being said, the “Notorious” one feels as if he will continue his UFC unbeaten streak and make history in the process. While White may not be able to see how he gets the win, I’m sure Mystic Mac has a clear vision in his head of what he plans to do.

Do you agree with the UFC boss, or will McGregor topple yet another Brazilian champion?

We are now just over a month out from the highly anticipated super fight between defending UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos and reigning featherweight title holder the “Notorious” Conor McGregor.

McGregor will be moving up in weight to challenger for the 155-pound strap, and the two are set to do battle at March 5’s UFC 196 from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Irish superstar has won all seven of his Octagon bouts, and is coming off of a shocking 13-second demolition of former long-time champion Jose Aldo at last December’s UFC 194.

Dos Anjos has also been on a tear as of late, winning five straight including dominant showcases over the likes of Benson Henderson, Nate Diaz, Anthony Pettis, and most recently Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.

While McGregor has backed up all of his relentless trash talk to date, many feel as if dos Anjos provides a troublesome matchup for the fledgling 145-pound boss.

Former light heavyweight champion and former pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones recently gave his two cents on the upcoming bout, saying that while he’s a fan of the “Notorious” one, he’d have to go with the Brazilian here:

“It’s hard to say,” Jones said. “I’m a big fan of McGregor, I’m becoming a huge fan of RDS. Based on RDS’ performances, I think I’m going to go with him. I’m not rooting for either person, but If I had to put my money on someone, I’d put it on RDS … RDA, I’ve been calling him RDS.”

“[Donald Cerrone] is my teammate. I watched him prepare and I knew he was super prepared to become a world champion, and the way that fight went just showed me what level RDA is on. So if I had to put money on it I think I’ll go RDA.” Jones told Brazilian actress Rainah Andrews.

“Bones” is currently gearing up for a massive rematch with champion Daniel Cormier which will likely take place in the coming months.

Do you agree with Jones’ predicition?

Rafael dos Anjos Vows To Brutally Punish Conor McGregor At UFC 197

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos came face to face at today’s (January 20, 2016) UFC 197 press conference ahead of their March 5 super fight for the Brazilian’s title, and as expected, things got heated very quickly.

The “Notorious” one is attempting to do something no other fighter in UFC history has done before: simultaneously hold two titles at one time. Coming off of a sensational 13 second knockout over former longtime 145-pound boss Jose Aldo, the Irishman, confident in prediction as always, is eyeing yet another quick finish.

The Brazilian champion on the other hand, has different plans, detailing that he will drag McGregor into deep waters, before punishing him for his relentless trash talk:

“I’m gonna have a chance to finish this fight in the first round,” said dos Anjos. “But I want to punish him all the way until the third, until the fourth. I’m gonna make him bleed. He’s gonna pay for everything he’s talking about everybody. For all the disrespect this guy has.”

As far as the trash talk goes, McGregor has repeatedly called dos Anjos a traitor to his native Brazil, something that just doesn’t make sense to the lightweight king:

“For me, it doesn’t make any sense,” said Dos Anjos. “The whole world has American dreams. This country has people from all parts of the world. We have Irish who live here, we have Brazilians. I think these people don’t deserve to be called traitors.”

For dos Anjos, it’s not about the talk, as he’s simply focused on sending McGregor plummeting back down to featherweight:

“I’m not a trash talker,” said Dos Anjos. “I respect my opponents. I don’t trash talk, I just talk the truth. On March 5, I’m gonna send this guy home sad and I’m gonna keep my belt.”

Just under a month away from fight night, March 5, 2016 promises to be a historic night for the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Which champion will walk away victorious?
