Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier have had their fair share of back-and-forths since their last bout at UFC 257. Their highly-anticipated UFC 264 pre-fight press conference featured everything from wife jokes to “McGregor FAST” mockery, and before the war of words, McGregor attempted to start a fight with Poirier just two days away from their trilogy.

As the two UFC lightweight contenders made their way to the stage at T-Mobile Arena to answer questions from members of the media, McGregor charged at Poirier shortly after tossing bottles of his hot sauce into the crowd of fans. UFC president Dana White had to separate the two for a couple of minutes before the press conference could begin.

The trilogy between McGregor and Poirier is without question one of the biggest trilogies in combat sports history, and arguably the biggest in the history of the UFC. Couture vs. Liddell, Cormier vs. Miocic, and Edgar vs. Maynard are just a few of the matchups that come to mind in comparison.

After the buildup to their last fight which was relatively tranquil in comparison, it appears that the love between the two is all but lost ahead of their massive fight. Despite McGregor’s barrage of insults and verbal assaults, Poirier remained relatively unbothered by the extracurriculars that come with a McGregor fight.

The winner of the McGregor-Poirier trilogy is pretty much confirmed to get the next shot at UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira’s title. Oliveira earned the vacant belt over Michael Chandler at UFC 262 earlier this year.

If Poirier wins the trilogy, his name will need to be in the books as one of the greatest UFC lightweights in the promotion’s history, especially if he’s able to earn the belt over Oliveira. If McGregor wins, his superstardom and career comeback will be fully realized as he attempts to get ready to earn a second reign as the lightweight champion.

Who do you think won the verbal warfare at UFC 264 pre-fight press conference?

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier seemed to share a mutual respect for each other in and out of the octagon leading up to their last fight at UFC 257.

After McGregor threw a kick at Poirier during their faceoff six months later, it appears that the past positive energy between the two of them has worn thin.

Following a tense UFC 264 pre-fight press conference, McGregor and Poirier came face-to-face just 24 hours away from their ceremonial weigh-in in Las Vegas. Words were exchanged between the two, and McGregor pulled an old trick from his time facing off with Khabib Nurmagomedov by throwing a left low kick just as UFC president Dana White and security personnel intervened.

This came after about 20 minutes of the two UFC lightweights going back-and-forth with each other in an attempt to win the mental side of the buildup to the fight. Poirier mocked McGregor for poor trash talk compared to their first matchup back at UFC 178. McGregor at one point mocked Poirier’s relationship with his wife Jolie, and at one point started a “Jolie’s wife” chant.

Before the press conference, McGregor charged at Poirier and threw bottles of Poirier’s infamous hot sauce into the crowd. It was a chaotic affair at T-Mobile Arena just a few days out from arguably the biggest trilogy fight in UFC and MMA history.

Poirier comes into the trilogy with McGregor with a ton of momentum, after knocking him out at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi earlier this year. Despite receiving an offer from the UFC brass to immediately fight for the vacant UFC lightweight title, Poirier opted for the trilogy with McGregor with the winner being lightweight champion Charles Oliveira‘s next challenger.

Poirier and McGregor are now foes rather than friendly competitors, and it appears that energy will carry into the weekend in what should be one of the biggest pay-per-views of 2021.

Former UFC welterweight title challenger Jorge Masvidal gave a glowing review of his American Top Team teammate Dustin Poirier ahead of his trilogy bout with Conor McGregor at UFC 264.

Masvidal has been training with Poirier on a plethora of occasions leading up to “The Diamond”‘s matchup with McGregor in a pivotal lightweight matchup. The winner will more than likely be the next title challenger to lightweight champion Charles Oliveira’s belt later this year.

In a recent appearance on the UFC 264 betting preview show, Masvidal provided some insight into the matchup between the two lightweight stars and more specifically; what training with Poirier has been like.

“He’s in phenomenal shape, man,” Masvidal said. “I’ve been there since the start of the camp. He came in in shape. He wasn’t messing around. He knew that the third fight was going to happen at some point. It’s not like he went home and gave himself any slack. He came back full six-packed out, doing five rounds. Usually, I see him progress and he gets better every week.”

“He faced him twice. He’s got a lot of strategies going into it. I think standup anyway because he’s dealt with it on two occasions, he knows how quickly he can find his timing. I don’t think he’s going to catch him by surprise, even on the feet. But I think that’s one of Conor’s biggest strengths.”

Masvidal announced recently that he’s looking at a return to the UFC octagon sometime this Fall, and more specifically a possible fight against the returning Nick Diaz or top welterweight contender Colby Covington.

Poirier enters the trilogy bout with a ton of momentum after knocking out McGregor earlier in January at UFC 257. It is widely anticipated to be one of the biggest pay-per-views in UFC history in the promotion’s return to T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
