Daniel Zellhuber

UFC lightweight Daniel Zellhuber will be making his UFC debut on Sept. 17 at UFC Vegas 60. The Mexico native earned a roster spot on Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) last September. After a year-long layoff, Zellhuber will be looking to make an impact against LFA alumni Trey Ogden.

Zellhuber (12-0) is undefeated inside the octagon. He has fought for Combate Global, Lux Fight League and iKon Fighting Federation.

Before stepping into the UFC octagon for the first time, Zellhuber spoke with LowKick MMA’s Alex Behunin about training at Xtreme Couture, his plans post-layoff, and his fight prediction.

Originally training in Mexico, Zellhuber decided to have his training camp at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas. He believes the gym brings a new perspective to his training. It also allows him to be close to the UFC Performance Institute (PI).

“I feel that Xtreme Couture, as a gym, has settled pretty good with me because we have a lot of different guys here. The good part about being here is that almost everyone is bigger than me so that helped me develop my strength. Working with bigger people is something I’m not used to doing in Mexico.”

“We think for this moment in my career, Xtreme Couture with the coaches that are here, with Eric [Nicksick] that has put me under his wing…all the stuff that I can have here in Vegas, the PI… [Xtreme Couture] is the best gym to be at this point of my career so I think I still have a lot of room to grow and I just keep getting better here so it’s a great place.”

Daniel Zellhuber Is Back

After earning a UFC contract on DCWS in 2021, Zellhuber took a year-long layoff from fighting. The 23-year-old hopes to be more active going forward in his career but doesn’t plan on rushing anything.

“The plan right now is to have maybe two, three fights in a year depending on how I feel in the fights and how I end the fights… My idea is to finish fights and I’m pretty confident I have the abilities…but I don’t want to rush. Lightweight is the toughest division in the UFC, it’s no secret. I just don’t want to rush because I know that I still have a lot of room to grow.”

Zellhuber will be facing Trey Ogden, who is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. Ogden (15-5) also made an appearance last year on DWCS, where he secured a second-round submission to earn a spot in the UFC. The 32-year-old is coming off a split-decision loss against Jordan Leavitt in April.

Zellhuber believes Ogden is a big test for his introduction in the UFC. He wants to earn a finish in the UFC Apex but won’t be disappointed if the fight goes the distance.

“I’ve been studying the guy [for] almost three months… he has [a] good background, he has good jiu jitsu, good wrestling like he’s a complete fighter. It’s a good challenge for me.”

“I want to knock him out, I want to finish the fight eventually… I know that I have the power, I’d like to knock him out. If that’s not possible, a submission or even decision. I’m not going to that fight aiming for a bonus, I want to win. I’m going to do whatever it takes.”

UFC bantamweight Tony Gravely is preparing for his fight against Javid Basharat at UFC Fight Night on Sept. 17. The taekwondo black belt is on a two-fight winning streak, coming off a first-round knockout win over Johnny Munoz Jr. in June.

Gravely (23-7) is a veteran in the fight game– with 30 professional fights. The Dana White Contender Series (DWCS) alumn is looking to climb the ranks of the bantamweight division.

Before stepping into the octagon for his sixth UFC fight, Gravely spoke with LowKick MMA about his official fight prediction, DWCS experience and time at American Top Team.

Gravely’s goal is to be ranked in the bantamweight division by next year. In the meantime, he is focused on his upcoming fight against Javid Basharat. Basharat (12-0) is also a DWCS alumni, who is undefeated in his MMA career. He’s coming off a successful UFC debut in March, where he earned a unanimous decision win.

When asked about his prediction, Gravely said he will finish the fight in the later rounds.

“I want to say it’s gonna be a second or third round. I’m not sure if I think it’s going to be a submission or a TKO but it’ll be one or the other. It’ll be a second or third-round finish.”

Gravely got an opportunity to impress UFC president Dana White on DCWS in 2019. He took advantage of the moment and scored a KO win to earn a spot in the UFC. Since then, Gravely has gone 4-2 in his UFC career with two finishes. He explained how he’s changed as a fighter from DWCS to now.

“The biggest difference is confidence in my skill set. Back then, I knew what areas I was really good at and certain areas I thought I was good at but I was hesitant and I never really opened up and expressed everything,” Gravely said. “I’ve been a professional since like 2015, so not too long of a career as far as years go. So just progressing and being confident with my abilities, not just my cardio but everything as well.”

After spending years at Tech MMA and Fitness Academy, Gravely joined American Top Team (ATT), one of the premier gyms in mixed martial arts. Since making the move in 2020, Gravely has gained valuable knowledge from experienced training partners and coaches.

“It’s an unreal experience…getting to train with these guys and getting to pick their brains. If there’s something they do really well, you ask about it and they’ll do their best to help you with it and make you really good with it as well so it’s been phenomenal. It’s been a dream come true. I tell everybody [that] American Top Team is like a fighter’s heaven… from the top to the bottom, everything is 10 out of 10.”

Billy Goff signed with the UFC after winning Dana White’s Contender Series 48.

Coming off the biggest win of his career, Goff punched his ticket into the UFC after dispatching Shimon Smotritsky in the opening round by TKO. After a lackluster start to the show, week two really picked things up with an entertaining card that Goff opened on. Company president Dana White gave a pep talk to the fighters before the event and it seemed to have worked.

If you’re wondering what White told the participants, Goff shared it with us below.

DCWS 48 winner Billy Goff reveals Dana White’s pep talk

In an exclusive interview with LowKick MMA, Billy Goff revealed what Dana White told the contestants on the show to get them fired up before taking to the octagon.

“He had to restart it like three times because more fighters just kept walking in but it was a good speech,” Goff said. “One of the guys who was sitting next to me was getting all hyped up about it, and he loved it. He was cheering all the way back, when we go back to the locker rooms too. But I was the first fight, I was warming up. I didn’t care too much what he had to say. Nothing against him it’s just I gotta fight.”

“All he said basically was, ‘just come fight. You guys are the best in the world outside of the ones that are not ranked in the UFC. That’s why the matchmakers picked you. So, come fight. Show up ready to fight.’

“I always am. I’m always going to put on a fight. I’m never going to hang back and relax.”

Goff believes Daniel Cormier is better than Jon Jones

Goff made the case for Daniel Cormier to be a better fighter than Jon Jones. Cormier and Jones shared a heated rivalry and competed twice in the cage, with Jones coming out on top both times but not without controversy that overturned one of the rulings to a no-contest.

“DC, I think is one of the better fighters, even though people say he’s not as good as Jon Jones,” he added. “Personally, I think he’s better than Jon Jones, skill-wise because he’s so much shorter and has such a shorter reach and he’s still doing really well. He’s the better fighter.”

Chris Duncan

Scotland’s Chris Duncan put on an incredible comeback performance in the headlining bout of Dana White’s Contender Series Season 6 Episode 2.

This was Duncan’s second shot on the Contender Series, after coming up short against Viacheslav Borshchev in 2021. ‘The Problem’ refused to miss his ticket to the UFC a second time, as he put on a sensational display of violence to claim his contract.

Chris Duncan took on talented striker Charlie Campbell, a highly touted prospect who trains with the likes of Ray Longo and Al Iaquinta on Long Island. Campbell entered this fight as the favorite, and things appeared to be going the way the bookmakers predicted it, initially at least.

Campbell was able to rock Duncan with a series of brutal uppercuts and quickly began to pile on the pressure in search of a finish. However, Duncan embraced the chaos, swinging right back with his opponent, despite his comprised state. Within the fray of strikes, Duncan connected with a clean straight shot that sat Campbell right down. ‘The Problem’ followed up with ruthless ground and pound, leaving Campbell out cold on the canvas.

Check out the crazy finishing sequence below:

Chris Duncan Was Not The Only Highlight On This Episode Of DWCS

Whilst Chris Duncan may have picked up a memorable win, and a UFC contract in the process, he was not the only fighter to do so that night. All five victors put on incredible displays, impressing Dana White enough to hand out five contracts.

Despite being a big underdog, Vinicius Salvador’s slick combination striking was enough to finish Aussie fighter, Shannon Ross.

In the only fight of the night that went to the judge’s decision, Francis Marshall and Connor Matthews threw down in the center of the octagon. Marshall was the clear victor, although Matthews was as game as they come, resulting in an incredible back and forth brawl.

Former LFA heavyweight champion Waldo Cortes-Acosta continued his unbeaten run with a first-round KO victory over former Ares FC champion Danilo Suzart.

In the first fight of the night, Shimon Smotritsky dropped Billy Goff early with a clean head kick. However, Goff was able to battle back to his feet, all the while enduring relentless punishment from Smotritsky. However, Goff’s durability shone through, as he began to turn the tables towards the end of the first round. With less than two minutes to go, a blitz of punches from Goff sank his opponent to the canvas, forcing the referee to step in.

Who were you most impressed by on this latest episode of DWCS? Chris Duncan, Vinicius Salvador, Francis Marshall, Waldo Cortes-Acosta or Billy Goff?
