Conor McGregor has revealed his regret at not stepping up to welterweight after beating Eddie Alvarez to become the first dual-weight champion in UFC history.

Yesterday marked the fourth anniversary of McGregor’s history making fight with Alvarez. The Irishman took to social media to reflect on the biggest win of his career, he wrote.

“Happy ‘Champ Champ Day’ everyone. November twelfth! The day we completed the game and made history. First legalized UFC event in New York! First duel weight UFC world champion! Irish!”

“Most Knockdowns in a UFC World Title Fight,” McGregor continued. “Clinical shooting. I have surpassed this level, multiple times over. Excited to showcase!”

McGregor later took to Twitter to express his regret at not following up his win over Alvarez by stepping up t fight Tyron Woodley for the chance to become a UFC champion at three weights.

“Currently watching Woodley Wonderboy 1 on BT Sport. I should have went for that treble real quick. Pre Floyd. Ah well, the game is still young.”

‘Notorious’ instead challenged boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in a highly anticipated and super lucrative cross over fight. The Irishman started well in his first professional boxing bout before ultimately suffering a tenth round TKO loss at the hands of ‘Money’.

The former welterweight champion Woodley saw McGregor’s tweet and fired back suggesting he would of made easy work of the MMA superstar

“shoulda woulda wouldn’t have #AllCap,” Woodley wrote.

Woodley has since dropped the 170lb title, losing to current champion Kamaru Usman. ‘The Chosen One’ is seriously struggling for form and is currently on a three fight losing skid. He dropped to a decision loss to Gilbert Burns earlier this year before being stopped by Colby Covington in September.

Do you think Conor McGregor could have beat Tyron Woodley to become a three-weight UFC champion?

Eddie Alvarez isn’t interested in having his trilogy with Michael Chandler.

Following Chandler’s first-round knockout win over Benson Henderson, the former Bellator lightweight champion became a free agent. Immediately, many fans wanted him to either sign with the UFC or ONE Championship to have the trilogy with Alvarez. Yet, the former UFC lightweight champion doesn’t seem so keen on that idea.

“No, I don’t care about him either,” Alvarez said to SCMP. “I don’t because again it’s another guy who doesn’t hold a world title. He wasn’t the champion of Bellator. He got knocked out by the 145 pounder [Patricio Freire], and he’s not the champion of ONE. And he wasn’t the champion of the UFC. He’s not a champion any more, so my goal is set on champions. So, the only guy that interests me or that I’d be licking my chops at right now is Christian Lee. Anyone else, they can do whatever they want.”

Unfortunately for many MMA fans who have been clamoring to see the trilogy it won’t happen. Instead, a trilogy Alvarez is interested in is the Shinya Aoki one.

“Of course,” said Alvarez. “I don’t care if it does. Just being totally honest. When Shinya beat me I was very young in my career. I was super young, I didn’t train jiu-jitsu much, I was still trying to knock everyone’s head off, I was not polished. I didn’t put my game together, so I evolved a ton since he beat me back in 2007. And I think the result when we rematched is pretty much going to be the result from now until the end of time. I feel like I put him away the same way. I don’t feel like there would be a different result to that fight, so I don’t really feel the need to fight him again or the want to fight him again unless it’s for a title.”

What Eddie Alvarez really wants however is to fight the champion in Christian Lee.

“We’ve got to see if the promotion allows it,” Alvarez said. “He says he wants it. The promotion I don’t think wants that to happen. They want him to stay champion for a little longer. The promotion knows what I do to champions.”

Perhaps, if Chandler joins ONE Championship the trilogy will happen down the line, especially if one of them become the champion. For now, Eddie Alvarez is interested in other fights.
