Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey suffered a harrowing knockout loss against Holly Holm at UFC 193, one that sent her in to a tailspin of depression and negative media for the months following. Having lived the life of the most dominant champion in the division’s history, overnight ‘Rowdy’ fell in to a pit of despair that she would not emerge from until last month. It’s important amidst all the criticism over Rousey’s attitude to remember she is human, just like the rest of us.

The persona we see in UFC promo cuts and media sessions is not necessarily an accurate depiction of the real Ronda Rousey, and I feel the circumstances surrounding UFC 193 go much deeper than it appears. The common MMA fan might tell you that she was simply a hype train that got derailed, beating ‘lesser’ competition in a division devoid of real talent. In reality, the women’s 135 pound division needs a boost, that’s true, but this isn’t a tool to take away a champ’s achievements. The loss to Holm leaves one clear message to consider; Ronda Rousey needs to change camps.

Here’s why:

Improvement, or the illusion of

Rousey came in to the UFC 193 main event intent on destroying Holly Holm in the stand up department, but for some reason was overlooking the former boxing great’s own striking skills. For a fighter like Rousey, only really focusing on boxing for three years, to take on a thorough bred pugilist like ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ head on like that, there’s really something wrong there. Completely abandoning the bread and butter grappling style that got her to the belt in the first place, Rousey was like a lamb to the slaughter, and it was certainly a rough night down under.

Her stand up was always going to look amateur against a great boxer and kickboxer like Holm, but it wasn’t just down to her opponents skill advantage. Everything about Rousey’s stand up was wrong, her footwork, lack of head movement, inability to cut angles or close off her opponent’s movement, her hand position, her range, her lack of head movement. In reality, she had absolutely zero fundamentals, not even the basics, to show Holly Holm that night in Melbourne, Australia. At some point, you have to look at who is training her to use these techniques, who is telling her that this is how you fight.

Which leads quite nicely to the next point.

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey continues to inch her way back inside the Octagon following her devastating second-round TKO loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193. Rousey, who suffered her first loss of her career in that bout, has not fought since then but has vowed on several occasions that she will step inside the Octagon and fight again.

Rousey was seen training at the Glendale Fighting Club in California this week with her coach Edmond Tarverdyan. Courtesy of TMZ Sports, you can see photos of Rousey training here:

Rousey is staying true to her word regarding Tarverdyan remaining her coach. Following the fight, media members, fighters, and fans questioned if Rousey should keep her coach around. Her mother came out before the fight saying that he was a “terrible” instructor who’s a “bad person.” Her mother was not even at the fight which was a first for Rousey.

Rousey and UFC President Dana White has gone on record by saying that she would return to MMA late in 2016 due to her movie schedule.

It’s expected that if Holm can defeat Miesha Tate in the co-main event of UFC 196 then she would fight Rousey this year.

Just What the Hell is Going On With Ronda Rousey’s Trainer, Edmond Tarverdyan?

(“If anyone from the bank shows up looking for a guy named Edward Targaryen, you never heard of him, okay?” via Getty.)

It has been a whirlwind handful of months for the Ronda Rousey camp, to put it lightly. Her loss to Holly Holm aside, it would appear as if Rousey’s support system is crumbling to the ground around her, or at the very least, setting all the charges for an eventual explosion.

It has been a whirlwind handful of months for the Ronda Rousey camp, to put it lightly. Her loss to Holly Holm aside, it would appear as if Rousey’s support system is crumbling to the ground around her, or at the very least, setting all the charges for an eventual explosion.

A brief recap: Rousey’s mother, AnnMaria DeMars, recently doubled down on her previous remarks aimed at her head trainer, Edmond Tarverdyan, stating that she “would run him over with her car if there wasn’t a law against it.” This came amidst reports that Tarverdyan had filed for bankruptcy and that his gym, Glendale Fight Club, was being pursued for liquidation to cover part of the $700,000+ that Tarverdyan owed to various banks and creditors.

Late last month, it was *then* revealed that Tarverdyan had failed to disclose his criminal past while applying for his cornerman’s license (or “Second’s license, as it’s called). MMAFighting explains:

Tarverdyan, 34, was arrested in December 2010 on two counts of felony identity theft and one count of misdemeanor resisting arrest, according to public records. The identity theft counts were bumped down to misdemeanors and Tarverdyan ended up pleading no contest to the three charges.

In 2011, the coach was sentenced to one day in jail (with a credit of one day), three years of probation and 30 days of community service, according to court documents. He was also fined $610.

So basically, everything we’ve come to know about Edmond Tarverdyan is a lie, right down to his age (if the information dug up by these redditors has any truth to it).

As a result of his most recent lie, Tarverdyan was stripped of his Second’s license indefinitely by CSAC, bringing into question his status as Rousey’s corner should her rematch with Holm be held in California (not that it would).

But even the darkest clouds have a silver lining, and yesterday, the CSAC handed down an official ruling on Tarverdyan following a complete investigation. The result: A surprisingly lenient suspension and fine (the latter of which we imagine Tarverdyan might have a tough time paying). As ESPN’s Brett Okamoto tweeted:

His first order of business as Rousey’s newly-suspended coach? We couldn’t tell you exactly, but we do know that it won’t be showing Rousey tape of her UFC 193 performance. As he told Fox Sports:

“I know how to speak to Ronda. I know Ronda very well. She doesn’t need to watch that fight. The fight is over. It’s about what we’re doing now. It’s my job to watch the footage and I’m dedicating everything I have to Ronda’s rematch with Holly.”

Boy, can Mama Rousey ever spot a fraud when she sees one.

CSAC Suspends, Fines Ronda Rousey’s Coach Edmond Tarverdyan For Falsifying Application

Ronda Rousey’s head coach, Edmond Tarverdyan was handed down a three-month suspension and $5,000 fine from the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) this week.

Ronda Rousey’s head coach, Edmond Tarverdyan was handed down a three-month suspension and $5,000 fine from the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) this week.

Tarverdyan was arrested back in 2010 on two felony counts of identity theft and one count of resisting arrest, however the Glendale Fighting Club trainer marked “no” where it asks if you have ever had any criminal offenses on the application for his corner man license filed in the state on April 2, 2015.

Two weeks ago, Tarverdyan’s license was revoked due to the offense, and this week it was decided that he will also serve a three-month suspension with an additional three-year probationary period, and will be forced to pay a fine of $5,000.

Half of the $5k fine is for falsifying his corner man application with the commission, while the other half is for “discrediting boxing and/or mixed martial arts.”

While Tarverdyan has yet to publicly comment on the situation, he did make the following comments in a statement filed with the CSAC before his punishment was handed down this week:

“I want to first and foremost apologize to Executive Officer Andy Foster and the honorable commissioners. I take my position and role in combat sports very seriously, and I regret if this matter has caused any embarrassment to the California State Athletic Commission.

“In my life, I have not concealed my past indiscretions from people I come into contact with. And I do not want to do so in this instance. I train many young athletes and when I see that they are heading down the wrong path in life, I often remind them of the mistakes and regrets of my past as a way to guide them onto the right track in life. I hope to continue to take the opportunity to help others in combat sports to make the correct moral and ethical decisions in their lives. And I intend to make the correct decisions in my life as well.”

After formerly dominant UFC bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey surrendered her title in brutal fashion to Holly Holm last November, her coach, Edmond Tarverydan, received quite the criticism.

Not only has he been on the short side of some heavy backlash, but Tarverdyan has now run into another issue, as he has been suspended and fined by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

According to MMAFighting.com, the head coach of Glendale Fighting Club was punished essentially for lying on his application. Tarverdyan answered “no” in 2015 to a question asking whether or not he had any criminal offenses despite having been arrested in 2010 on felony charges regarding identity theft and resisting arrest.

The commission handed down a three month suspension as well as a $5,000 fine.

Although he had interest in commenting on the matter today, Tarverydan did present a statement prior to the hearing, which also went down today (February 2, 2016):

“I want to first and foremost apologize to Executive Officer Andy Foster and the honorable commissioners,” Tarverdyan wrote. “I take my position and role in combat sports very seriously, and I regret if this matter has caused any embarrassment to the California State Athletic Commission.

“In my life, I have not concealed my past indiscretions from people I come into contact with. And I do not want to do so in this instance. And I intend to make the correct decisions in my life as well.”

Do you agree with the repercussions given to Tarverdyan?

Ronda Rousey’s coach reacts to some of ‘Rowdy’s’ Mom’s criticism over his style of teaching, but it’s not actually him…

OK, we’ve all made mistakes in the past, but it seems that swelling Ronda Rousey’s ego by telling her she is a great boxer is a doozy. That is, according to the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion’s mother. She recently blasted Edmond Tarverdyan, Rousey’s long time coach, as an ego-maniacal fraud and an idiot. It’s not the first time Dr. AnnMaria De Mars (Rousey’s Mom) has put the screws to Edmond’s reputation.

Before UFC 193, Rousey’s Mother famously said she hated Tarverdyan, that he was sponging off Rousey’s natural talent and that she hoped he was run over and killed by a car. That’s some pretty intense crioticism, and it looked as though she may have been right as ‘Rowdy’ got outclassed and destroyed by Holly Holm at UFC 193.

05_15180224_44890f_2563877aIn response to the critics after Rousey’s UFC 193 performance, Tarverdyan said he would not bring in a boxing coach to sharpen Rousey’s striking game, and also that he felt Rousey was ‘just caught,’ rather than completely dominated by ‘The Preacher’s Daughter.’

Now, in a rather hilarious twist to the ongoing plot, UFC associated ‘news’ site TMZ published an interview with one ‘Edmund Tarverdyan’ (notice the spelling error) where he reacts to Rousey’s Mom’s latest rant. Saying the following:

“It’s just her opinion. I’m just here to train Ronda and it really doesn’t matter. Ronda knows who I am. I am her trainer and that’s really about it.”

It’s a shame he didn’t go full balls to the wall, but he has made a point of gloating about his new found fame on the parody twitter account for Edmond:

As said, we’ve all made mistakes in the past, but that doesn’t mean we can’t all have a laugh at this latest blooper.
