Israel Adesanya misses out on ESPYs nomination Best UFC Fighter despite title win at UFC 287

Despite making plans to collect an award at next month’s ESPYs, current UFC middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya has missed out on the category nomination for ‘Best UFC Fighter’ according to a press release, amid his stunning title victory at UFC 287 in April.

Adesanya, the current and a two-time undisputed middleweight champion, headlined UFC 287 earlier this year in Miami, Florida, avening a prior knockout loss to Alex Pereira in November of last year, stopping the Brazilian champion with a stunning second round one-punch KO – striking divisional gold again.

Yet to be booked for his return to the Octagon following his victory in ‘The Sunshine State’, Adesanya has been earmarked to headline an event before the end of this year, taking on the victor of an official title-eliminator between former champion, Robert Whittaker, and rival, Dricus du Plessis next month at UFC 290 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Israel Adesanya misses out on a ‘Best UFC Fighter’ nomination at this year’s ESPYs

And set to be in attendance at the T-Mobile Arena next month, Israel Adesanya has, however, missed out on a nomination for the ‘Best UFC Fighter’ category at the International Fight Week event – with the quartet of Leon Edwards, Jon Jones, Islam Makhachev, and the recently retired, Amanda Nunes all receiving nominations as per ESPN reporter, Marc Raimondi.

Previously laying out distinct plans to feature in a nominated capacity at the ESPY this summer, Adesanya, had also called for the Comeback of the Year, Knockout of the Year, and ‘Fighter of the Year’ awards in a text message exchange.

Boasting a 24-2 professional record, Israel Adesanya’s sole losses in the sport have come in the of his aforenoted standing TKO loss to Pereira back in November of last year, which followed an unsuccessful light heavyweight title siege opposite former champion, Jan Blachowicz back in 2021 at the UFC Apex facility – dropping a unanimous decision loss to the Pole on that occasion.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor was voted “Best Fighter” during the ESPY Awards Wednesday night.

McGregor, who returns to action in August at UFC 202 vs. Nate Diaz, continued MMA’s run winning the award after Ronda Rousey claimed top honors last year in the fan-voted category. Prior to that, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. had won three straight and boxers had won the award every year since its inception in 2007.

Other finalists in the category included UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, Gennady Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez and Roman Gonzalez.

Holly Holm also took home an ESPY, earning the “Best Upset” category for her victory over Ronda Rousey last year. Holm won the UFC female bantamweight title when she became the first person to defeat Rousey.

She was also up for the “Best Play,” which was her knockout of Rousey.

VIDEO: Ronda Rousey Wins “Best Fighter” at ESPY’s, Uses Opportunity to Blast Floyd Mayweather

Look, I know that any discussion of Ronda Rousey vs. Floyd Mayweather represents the absolute nadir of the MMA vs. Boxing debate and perhaps even sports journalism, but game simply must recognize game here.

At last night’s ESPY’s, Rousey took home the award for “Best Fighter” — beating out a field that included Mayweather, Terence Crawford, and Donald Cerrone — as well as the “Best Female Athlete” award. While discussing her big win on the red carpet, Rousey used the opportunity to eviscerate the pound-for-pound boxing king for his history of domestic…let’s call them “issues.”

“I wonder how Floyd feels being beat by a woman for once,” Rousey said. “I’d like to see him pretend to not know who I am now.”

#BOOMHEADSHOT. Next up on Rousey’s call out list, Mike Tyso-nevermind.

In other ESPY news, Caitlyn Jenner was bestowed with the Arthur Ashe Award for courage, and everyone was too busy talking about how she looked/sounded to consider whether or not it might be a bit presumptuous to give a courage award to someone who recklessly killed a woman in a car crash earlier this year. Yay Hollywood.

Non-MMA Video of the Day: Stuart Scott’s Beautiful, Inspiring Speech At Last Night’s ESPYs

We’ve all lost someone to cancer. It is a perpetual, all-encompassing disease that practically embodies our perception of Death, and one that has taken the lives of countless human beings and affected the lives of countless more. But if ALF’s ass-whipping of Lymphoma has shown us anything, it’s that nothing, not even cancer, can triumph over the power of human will.

Legendary sports personality and Sportscenter anchor Stuart Scott received the heartbreaking diagnosis seven years ago. Seven years. And last night, he received the Jimmy V Perseverance Award, named after college basketball coach and broadcaster Jimmy Valvano, at the 2014 ESPYs.

His speech was nothing short of beautiful, the kind of speech that I can do no justice in describing with simple adjectives, no matter how monosyllabic and pretentious they would be. You could almost feel the Nokia Center settle with the gravitas of Scott’s trademark voice as he sang the praises of his co-workers, his friends and family — everyone who helped him when he needed it most. Having spent 7 of the past 10 days laid up in the hospital with kidney failure and liver complications (among other ailments), undergoing 4 surgeries in the process, Stuart was unsure if he’d even be able to make it to the ESPYs to accept his award.

“I couldn’t fight,” Stuart lamented. “But the doctors and nurses could. The people that I loved…they could fight.”

But Scott did make it. He persevered and will surely continue to persevere because that’s just the kind of guy he is. He won’t be defeated by his greatest foe. He’ll go down, sure, but not out. In the words of Valvano, Scott will never give up. And his words will surely pull at the heartstrings of anyone who has ever done the same, or seen someone who has. Because in the end, cancer may defeat you, but it will never win.

“When you die, it doesn’t mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.” – Stuart Scott
