After Stipe Miocic successfully defended his heavyweight title for the first time via first round stoppage against Alistair Overeem at last weekend’s (September 10, 2016) UFC 203, it’s currently unclear who will get the next crack at the champ. There does, however, appear to be multiple options.

Former champion Fabricio Werdum, who Miocic knocked out last May, recently got back in the win column at UFC 203 as well, picking up a decision victory over Travis Browne. Another ex-champion in Cain Velasquez, who Werdum submitted in June 2015, also recently got back to his winning ways, bulldozing Browne at July 9’s UFC 200. Finally, No. 4-ranked Junior Dos Santos is coming off of an impressive win over Ben Rothwell, although he’s also in the final stages of recovery after undergoing shoulder surgery.

As far as Werdum is concerned, however, the next title shot should be given to either him or Velasquez:

“There’s two people I think who clearly are in the title mix. Me or Cain Velasquez. It’s between the two of us. We must wait for what the UFC will decide. Junior Dos Santos is coming back from an injury, he just healed a while back and I don’t know if it would be interesting to put him up for a title shot right away. I can’t really answer that. We have to wait for the UFC to speak up.” Werdum told Combate.

Ironically enough, Velasquez recently called out Werdum for a rematch so perhaps the UFC has other plans regarding the title picture.

As for JDS, the Brazilian slugger said that he wasn’t all that impressed with Werdum’s UFC 203 performance, but “Vai Cavalo” isn’t too surprised by that:

“It’s normal for JDS to say my fight was bad. It’s normal that he wants to promote himself, because if he says my fight was good, it’ll promote me. It’s obvious he doesn’t want to promote me, he wants to promote himself so he can fight for the title.”

Who would you like to see receive the next shot at Miocic?

A few years back, former two-time UFC champion Cain Velasquez was considered by many to be the greatest heavyweight to have ever competed in mixed martial arts; or he was at least heavily in the discussion.

Fast-forward to 2016, however, and Velasquez is no longer the king of the UFC’s heavyweight division.

A plethora of injuries and an upset loss later and Velasquez finds himself at a crossroads, having only competed once since October 2013.

The former champion is set to face off with No. 7-ranked Travis Browne at July 9’s UFC 200 in a bout that if won, could launch Velasquez back into title contention.

His accomplishments inside of the cage can never be looked down upon, and while anything can happen in the insane sport called MMA, let’s take a look at five reasons why Velasquez will never maintain UFC gold again.

After surrendering his title in brutal fashion last June to Fabricio Werdum, oft-injured former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was scheduled to rematch “Vai Cavalo” at the upcoming February 6th event from Las Vegas, Nevada.

However, in what seems to be a common trend now a days, the Mexican-American was forced out of the bout with a back injury. Werdum would withdraw soon after, and the fight was scrapped completely.

Velasquez’s injury required him to undergo yet another surgery, and he has done just that. Recently taking to his official Facebook page, the former champion claimed that his surgery was a “complete success”, and said that he hopes to return to full training next month:

“I wanted to update you all on how my injury has been progressing.

First off, I want to thank you all for your amazing support. Your messages and your support have really helped me and my family through a tough time.

I had orthoscopic surgery on Monday morning to remove some bone spurs that were pinching my sciatic nerve. The surgery was a complete success and I can’t tell you how well I’m feeling already.

My doctors have recommended I take it easy for now but can begin light training in about two weeks. They also think I’ll be able to train at 100% in about four to five weeks. I’ll follow their orders but I can’t wait to get back in there.

I’ll keep updating everyone right here and on Twitter.

Thanks again,

Cain”

While Velasquez undoubtedly wants the opportunity to regain his title, it’s currently unclear what the UFC plans to do with the cloudy heavyweight title picture.

After Velasquez pulled out of the bout with Werdum, top contender Stipe Miocic quickly stepped in to take on the champion before “Vai Cavalo” pulled out himself. With that being said, Miocic could very well be next in line for a title shot.

No. 5-ranked Ben Rothwell also just picked up his fourth straight stoppage victory over Josh Barnett, and he too is knocking on the doors of a shot at gold.

What should be next for Velasquez upon his return?

Cain Velasquez was once the baddest man on the planet, here’s how he earned that title. WWE crossover Brock Lesnar was simply no match…

There once was a time in MMA history that size and brute strength was nearly the deciding factor in the UFC heavyweight division. No, I’m not talking about the dark ages of the UFC or the Pride FC days, this was as recent as circa 2009. Behemoth pro wrestling convert Brock Lesnar ruled the heavyweights in the UFC at that time, having got four straight wins over Heath Herring, Randy Couture, Frank Mir and Shane Carwin.

Then came his fateful fight with Cain Velasquez, a hungry up and comer with violence on his mind and fire in his heart. The two were scheduled to face off at UFC 121 in 2010, and the stage was set for a colossal heavyweight title clash. A win for Lesnar would surely cement his position as the undisputed 265-pound boss, for Velasquez it would mean a new era for the division. What transpired was a brutal and bloody beatdown.

Velasquez had not respect for the wrestling or striking of the champion, as he set about viciously beating the bigger man around the octagon. It soon became apparent that Lesnar was no longer the king of the division, as Velasquez smeared the champ’s chops all over the canvas.

The result was a resounding TKO victory for Velasquez, and he would go on to hold the title (on and off) until 2015, albeit with numerous injury layoffs and a knockout loss to Junior dos Santos in between. He then faced Fabricio Werdum at UFC 188, and was smashed himself before being submitted by ‘Vai Cavalo.’

Ahead of his UFC 196 rematch with Werdum, check out some of Cain Velasquez’s best handy work, as he batters Brock Lesnar to a pulp:
