Bellator 170 is in the books. The first event of 2017 from the promotion featured Tito Ortiz competing for the final time in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. He took on Chael Sonnen in the event’s headliner. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” earned the submission win in the first round.
The co-main event saw a devastating jumping knee from Paul Daley end Brennan Ward’s night early. After the bout, “Semtex” made it clear that he wants to welcome Rory MacDonald to the Bellator cage.
During the broadcast, a rematch between Quinton Jackson and Muhammad Lawal was announced. That fight is set for March 31 on Spike. Click here for the full Bellator 170 results.
The live post-fight press conference will begin around 12:45 a.m. ET.
Tito Ortiz took his final bow at Bellator 170. Ortiz had his final fight against Chael Sonnen inside The Forum in Inglewood, California. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” made his last hurrah a successful one.
Early in the fight, Sonnen pressed forward and threw some kicks. Ortiz was right there with him throwing strikes. He took Sonnen down and found himself in a choke. Ortiz was able to pop his head out and get to full mount. Sonnen gave up his back and Ortiz locked in a rear-naked choke to force the tap.
Ortiz held on for a bit and “Big” John McCarthy had to use more force than usual to get him off. After the fight, McCarthy let Ortiz know about the incident and the now retired fighter apologized.
The co-main event saw a welterweight clash between Paul Daley and Brennan Ward take place. Few people saw the fight going the distance. It didn’t even make it to the second round. Daley dealt with some takedowns early, but he was back to his feet in short order.
A spinning back elbow from “Semtex” allowed for some separation. Daley was able to land a jumping knee to the side of Ward’s head. It was lights out and Daley earned the 29th knockout of his career. After the fight, he called out Rory MacDonald.

The rematch between Quinton Jackson and Muhammed Lawal has been made official.
During tonight’s (Jan. 21) Bellator 170 broadcast, “Rampage” and “King Mo” were brought out for the big reveal. The bout will take place on March 31. The two first competed against each other at Bellator 120 back in May 2014. Jackson took the fight by unanimous decision.
Lawal believes he won the fight and said so during the broadcast. Jackson responded by questioning how “King Mo” thinks he won a fight by holding the entire time.
“Rampage” is riding a five-fight winning streak. He’s gone 4-0 since entering the Bellator cage. A contract dispute saw him briefly come back to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) at UFC 186. He defeated Fabio Maldonado by unanimous decision.
Jackson was able to sort out his differences with Bellator once Scott Coker took over as President of the promotion. His first fight back was against Satoshi Ishii back in June 2016. He won the fight by split decision.
Lawal is coming off a TKO loss at the hands of Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic at Rizin 3 World Grand-Prix 2016. “King Mo” had been riding a seven-fight winning streak before running into current Bellator light heavyweight champion Phil Davis. “Mr. Wonderful won that fight by unanimous decision.
It looks like next month’s UFC Fight Night card in Halifax won’t be seeing Junior dos Santos in action. The former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight title holder took to Twitter to reveal he is no longer a part of that event.
“Cigano” was originally supposed to fight Stefan Struve in a rematch. Dos Santos earned a TKO win over “Skyscraper” back in Feb. 2009. The fight lasted just 54 seconds.
A torn labrum forced Struve to pull out and dos Santos was left without an opponent. At first, UFC officials were looking for a replacement. It appears they couldn’t find one who would agree to face “Cigano” on short notice.
There has been no word on what the planned main event will be for the card. It’s a tough break for dos Santos, who hasn’t competed since April 2016. He beat Ben Rothwell from pillar to post for five rounds in his last bout. It was the type of performance “Cigano” needed after suffering a TKO loss to Alistair Overeem.
After getting beat badly in the second and third bouts with Cain Velasquez, many have questioned if dos Santos will ever return to form. While his thrashing of Rothwell was a good sign, some are still skeptical.
The former champion remains confident that he’s going to climb the 265-pound mountain once again. He holds a knockout win over Fabricio Werdum from 2008 and a controversial decision victory over the reigning title holder Stipe Miocic.
Right now, there is no clear contender at heavyweight. Stipe just disposed of Overeem, Velasquez is out with an injury, and Werdum was knocked out by Miocic at UFC 198. It’ll be interesting to see if the UFC books a title eliminator between Werdum and dos Santos, or if they decide to give one of them a title shot.
The UFC Fight Night event is set for Feb. 19 inside the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
