Hours after I wrote that M-1 Global was closing its Netherlands office and that officials with the organization were panicking in the wake of Fedor Emelianenko‘s loss, I spoke with M-1 Global Director of Operations Evgeni Kogan, who said the story was not true.

Kogan acknowledged that four employees of the promotion’s Netherlands office have been “made redundant” in a “restructuring” of the company that took place over the last 10 days, but Kogan claims it’s pure coincidence that M-1 chose to restructure after Emelianenko’s loss. He said he himself is still at the Netherlands office, but he refused to name any other employees who remain there.

Despite Kogan’s denials, one of the original sources has reiterated that in the days following Fedor’s loss, Kogan told multiple employees of M-1’s Netherlands office that they are losing their jobs because the office is closing. Told that Kogan had denied the original story, the source said Kogan was “lying.”

Fabricio Werdum and Fedor EmelianenkoTen days after Fedor Emelianenko lost to Fabricio Werdum, Fedor’s promotional organization M-1 Global is in disarray as it attempts to adjust to a world in which Fedor is no longer considered the best fighter in MMA.

Specifically, sources with knowledge of the situation say M-1 Global has closed its head office in the Netherlands, that some of M-1’s investors have already cut ties with the organization, that officials within M-1 know they’ve lost most of their negotiating power, and that overall, according to one source, the people at M-1 are “panicking.”

Scott Coker Lobbies for Fedor vs. Overeem, Defends Negotiations With Batista

(Batista vs. Undertaker, reffed by Ricky Hatton. A terrifying glimpse into the future of MMA.)

We all go a little crazy sometimes. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker can certainly be forgiven for losing his mind in the wake of Fedor Emelianenko’s upset loss against Fabricio Werdum, which wrecked Coker’s chance at a heavyweight title fight between Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem on pay-per-view, and even now seems unreal, a bad dream suffered after a night of torture porn and Indian food. But this is the topsy-turvy world of Strikeforce, where up is down, and guys who just got their asses kicked are #1 contenders. As Coker recently said on Sherdog Radio“My feeling is maybe Fedor should fight Alistair Overeem and whoever wins that fight gets to fight Fabricio Werdum. Alistair vs. Fedor? I’d love to see that fight happen.”

LOL at "gets" to fight Fabricio Werdum. Is he the champion now? Is that how it works in your little club? Look genius, everybody would like to see Fedor vs. Overeem happen, but unless you want your titles to lose all significance and your matchmaking to devolve into utter chaos, you probably shouldn’t have Fedor challenge for Overeem’s belt after getting subbed in 69 seconds. I know, Brett Rogers got a title shot after being dunced by Fedor, but that situation was different, as Emelianenko was unavailable to fight at the same time Overeem was. In this case, the deserving #1 contender is available (even though he’s asking for an immediate rematch with Fedor, God knows why).

It should be mentioned that M-1 Global has also formally requested a rematch between The Last Emperor and Werdum. The logical title fight, Werdum vs. Overeem, is the only fight that nobody seems to want. Forget it Jake, it’s Strikeforcetown. But Coker’s suggestion of a title shot for Fedor isn’t the only alarming thing he said last week…

The UFC heavyweight champion is now the undisputed heavyweight champion of mixed martial arts.

Zuffa’s belt already signified the best fighter in every weight class from bantamweight through light heavyweight, and now the two big heavyweight fights of the last two weekends — Fabricio Werdum’s shocking upset over Fedor Emelianenko and Brock Lesnar’s comeback win over Shane Carwin — have resulted in a changing of the guard in the heavyweight division as well.

Lesnar is undeniably the sport’s No. 1 heavyweight, but how does the rest of the top 10 shake out? Find out below.

This week’s episode of the MMA Wrap-Up looks back on UFC 116 in an attempt to calm down a little bit after a fantastic night of fights and ask ourselves a very serious question: really, Brock Lesnar is now the world’s best heavyweight? The guy who has only six pro fights on his record? One of which was against Min Soo Kim? Really? Okay.

Since it does indeed appear to be the case that Lesnar occupies the top spot, and since that does seem a little weird to me, the next goal is to figure out why it should be any stranger for Lesnar to be #1 than it was for Fedor Emelianenko, who suddenly seems like a puppy that the MMA world loved intensely until he chewed their shoes and was summarily stuck in the backyard and then forgotten about it. I promise this analogy did not make it into the video.

Check out this week’s episode below to see which flawed attempts at logic and humor did find their way to the internet.
