One of MMA’s all-time greats will make his return in October, when Fedor Emelianenko will compete at an unnamed Bellator event.

Ariel Helwani has reported that ‘The Last Emperor’s return will be made official by the promotion on Friday. An opponent and venue for the event have yet to be named. It will be Emelianenko’s first time competing since he claimed a victory over Rampage Jackson at Bellator 237 in December 2019.

Emelianenko will be 45 by the time he steps into the cage again. At this point in his career, he is no longer considered a true title contender, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a number of interesting fights that await him in the cage. Most notably, recently released former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos has been rumored to be joining the Bellator ranks, and a fight between the two superstars would be one of the biggest the organization could put together. There were even reports earlier this year that the two were set to meet at an event in Russia.

Dos Santos fell on hard times to end his run in the UFC. He has lost his last 4 fights, dropping all of them by way of TKO. Still, his name holds value and he was in the UFC title picture as recently as June 2019. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that a change of scenery and a little luck could find him with a belt around his waist once more.

Whoever Emelianenko ends up fighting, it is sure to draw the attention of the entire MMA community. The former Pride heavyweight champion has still proven to be a draw, and has amassed a respectable 5-2 record since coming out of retirement in December 2015. His return means he obviously believes he still has something left in the tank, so let’s hope that his return will see him look in recent form.

Fedor Emelianenko could fight soon and his opponent might even be Junior dos Santos or Alistair Overeem.

That’s according to Bellator MMA president Scott Coker who revealed that Emelianenko has recovered after contracting COVID-19 last year and is back in the gym as he prepares for his comeback.

“He’s doing much better and he’s ready to start training and getting ready,” Coker told MMA Junkie. “He will fight here in the next several months, I think. I’m going to talk to him when he gets here next week.

“He’s coming with (Vadim) Nemkov. I’ll have a chance to sit down and talk to him. I’ll make sure we’re on the same page as far as the timing of it all. I’m thinking late summer or early fall, you’ll see Fedor in the cage again.”

Emelianenko last competed in December 2019 when he TKO’d Rampage Jackson at Bellator 237.

And his next opponent could be another UFC legend as Coker revealed possibilities include Dos Santos and Overeem — both of whom were recently released from the Las Vegas-based promotion.

That said, Coker is only interested in one-fight deals for either fighter as the promotion is in talks with the pair.

“We’re not going to sign these guys to, like, a two-year, six-fight deal or build them up,” Coker said. “They’ve done everything. They’ve already proved themselves. They are legends of the sport already. But what I will say is we do have legends of the sport here.

“If we go down the road, and we think a Fedor opponent will work, Alistair and Fedor will be very interesting to me. Junior Dos Santos and Fedor will be very interesting to me.”

A potential Emelianenko vs. Overeem fight in particular would be very intriguing, especially as the pair could have fought in the 2011 Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix.

However, Overeem ended up withdrawing due to contractual issues while Emelianenko would famously lose to Fabricio Werdum.

“We put them on opposite sides of the bracket and Fedor lost,” Coker added. “It just didn’t get to the end. Having that fight now might be interesting. We’re still a long ways away from making that happen. But (with) superfights, if they’re open to it, what I told them both is, ‘Look, if you can get a contract somewhere else that is exclusive, then great. If you can’t and you want to fight superfights, the door is always open and we’ll have conversations.’”

Fedor Emelianenko and Junior dos Santos are longtime heavyweight favorites but have never met in the octagon. That is, until now. New rumors are surfacing that Fedor Emelianenko will face Junior dos Santos as the last fight of this career.

Both fighters have had periods of domination within their respective promotions. Over a 22 year career, Emelianenko (39-6-0) was the longtime king of Pride FC. He continued his reign of dominance in Strikeforce, M-1, Dream, and Bellator. At age 44, he has continued to fight past what many would consider his prime with success. His last fight resulted in a finish of another MMA legend, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Junior dos Santos (21-9-0) has spent most of his career in the UFC, the only major promotion for which he has fought. The UFC recently released Junior dos Santos earlier this year after a four-fight losing streak, the longest of his career.

Since his departure from the UFC, dos Santos has shared that he is open to fighting for Bellator as he is not ready to retire. While there are several exciting fights for him, one name was at the top of his list.

“I am a big fan of Fedor and it would be something really cool to be able to face him. I don’t know what his situation is, if he’s still fighting and I know he’s at Bellator. Bader who called us, who would welcome us, would be very interesting. He’s a really tough guy too. A rematch against Alistair Overeem himself, who always finds a way to get away from this issue. It can be at Bellator, wherever it is,” dos Santos shared.

Russia’s Tele Sport has reported that dos Santos is close to signing a deal with Bellator.

The deal is not yet official, but if signed he is expected to fight Fedor in Russia.

Junior dos Santos has expressed an interest in joining Bellator.

The former UFC heavyweight champion and is already eyeing a potential fight with fellow heavyweight legend, Fedor Emelianenko.

Dos Santos was released by the UFC earlier this month after losing four consecutive fights. His most recent setback came in December when he suffered a second-round TKO defeat to Ciryl Gane. The Brazilian had complaints about the nature of the finish — with Gane appearing to illegally elbow him — ‘JDS’ has now appealed against the loss.

In an interview with AG Fight, dos Santos seemed determined to keep fighting and highlighted a potential match-up with Emelianenko.

“I am a big fan of Fedor and it would be something really cool to be able to face him,” dos Santos said. “I don’t know what his situation is, if he’s still fighting and I know he’s at Bellator. Bader who called us, who would welcome us, would be very interesting. He’s a really tough guy too. A rematch against Alistair Overeem himself, who always finds a way to get away from this issue. It can be at Bellator, wherever it is.

Emelianenko hasn’t fought since knocking out Quinton ‘Rampage’ back in December 2019. One reason for that — other than the COVID-19 pandemic — is the fact that Bellator president Scott Coker would like to have the Russian’s final two fights on a grand stage rather than with no fans in attendance.

If the right offers don’t come in MMA, dos Santos will crossover into boxing.

“I’m taking the time to analyze the situation and choose the next step with more certainty,” dos Santos said. “I have proposals, opportunities within boxing too, which is my life’s passion. Of course it needs to be interesting for everyone and I think it would be incredible if it really is something that can be valid. It will be pretty cool. I always had that desire. When I focus only on boxing, I guarantee myself a lot. I really like the noble art.”
