When it comes to mixed martial arts, James Toney still has fight left in him.

Most people believed the multi-divisional boxing champion was one and done in the sport after losing to Randy Couture last August, but nearly a year after the disastrous debut, Toney has decided to return for another go-round. Toney and MMA pioneer Ken Shamrock have both signed on the dotted line to oppose each other in a fall event that is still being planned.

Toney’s trainer Trever Sherman confirmed the matchup to MMA Fighting.

BJPenn.com first reported the matchup, attaching it to a September 23 date in El Paso, Texas. Sherman, though, said to his knowledge, neither a date or location has been finalized. He said that Toney, Shamrock, their management teams and event promoters would meet this Saturday night to further discuss particulars.

“The earliest date as I know it would be late September, and the latest would be late October,” said Sherman, who added that Texas, California and Nevada were the three potential sites discussed, with Texas as the most likely destination.

Also undecided is whether the match will take place under an established promotion, or as a stand-alone event of fights offered on pay-per-view. Sherman further mentioned that a reality series could be attached to the bout.

Toney’s only pro MMA fight occurred against one of the sport’s all-time legends. At last August’s UFC 118, Couture took him down inside the opening 20 seconds and eventually forced Toney to tap to an arm triangle. Since then, Sherman said that Toney has done little MMA training aside from occasional grappling sessions. He has mainly focused on boxing, where he fought and retained his IBA heavyweight title with a unanimous decision over Damon Reed in February 2011.

The 47-year-old Shamrock was once one of MMA’s most intimidating fighters, but has won just twice since 2005, going 2-7 during that time. His last bout came last November, when he lost via TKO in the first round after injuring his knee.

Sherman said Toney promised to dedicate himself to training, and that they would invest time in working on takedown defense to keep the fight in Toney’s comfort zone.

“The takedown is Ken’s only chance,” Sherman said. “I respect Ken as much as I do Randy. He’s one of the reasons we have this art. But he can’t stand with James. Randy proved that. He didn’t stand with him for 10 seconds. No one will make that mistake. I want James to go in with hands down by his waist and dare Ken to punch with him.”

Sherman said that Toney was adapting well to takedown defense in practices with experienced wrestlers but made a mistake against Couture that he wouldn’t replicate against Shamrock. Even since then, he said that whenever Toney trains with wrestlers, he hurts them on the way in, and with small gloves, it may only take one well-placed punch to put Shamrock out.

Toney will prepare for the fight at the recently opened International Fight Center in Van Nuys, California. His team believes that with a win over Shamrock, Toney could put himself in place for a few paydays from promoters looking for unsigned drawing cards, and that if he can string a few wins together, a seemingly impossible goal looms for the soon-to-be 43-year-old: a return to the UFC.

UFC heavyweight Pat Barry has been quite a charismatic person outside of the UFC, however, he has remained focused ahead of his bout with French kickboxer, Cheick Kongo at UFC on Versus 4.

Barry, who will be in the co-main event against Kongo, has put his time in during his training camp and has prepared for his opponent as the Frenchman will serve as one of the biggest tests of his career.

While speaking with Heavy.com, Barry expects to see Kongo use a different strategy than before.

“He’s supposedly feeling 100 percent better now and he’s back to his old ways. But, now he’s standing across from me, and Cheick Kongo being the striker that he is, I guarantee you, will turn into a wrestler as soon as I throw punch either passed his head or I make contact,” Barry said.

Kongo is coming off a back surgery that Barry believes will hinder the Frenchman’s chances of a win on Sunday.

But with that in mind, Barry is not taking his opponent lightly and has been criticized for the lack of intensity he carries into fights. Barry said his recent training camp at DeathClutch in Alexandria, Minnesota will change critics perspective of him.

“Now, Cheick Kongo just had back surgery? I’m going to look for a scar, and I’m going to find it and bite it,” he said.

“That’s just the mentality that these guys have, and they mean it. Really, when it comes down to it, it makes the fight less intimidating.”

And it is with that new found killer instinct, Barry feels prepared for whatever Kongo brings at him this weekend.

Following UFC 131, it would be all but confirmed that Kenny Florian would be next in line to challenge UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo.

Aldo made a successful debut inside the Octagon defeating Mark Hominick at UFC 130. While speaking with TATAME.com, Aldo discussed the potential of facing Florian and commented on his most recent bout vs. Aldo’s teammate, Diego Nunes.

“He showed many positions and did a good fight, he just didn’t win it,” Aldo said of Nunes.

Aldo said he was unsure of who his next opponent will be, but he intends to defend his title later this year and put on a good performance for the sake of his position within the company.

“If it’s Kenny Florian, I’ll get there and do my job,” he said.

“I just want to add good things for Ultimate. So, if they tell me to fight Kenny, it’s okay by me. If they think he deserves it, I don’t see a problem. I’ll get there and do my best.”

The Brazilian has gone on a nine-fight winning streak, earning wins over such fighters as Urijah Faber and Mike Thomas Brown. A potential bout with Florian will be Aldo’s fifth title defense, a bout where he sees himself utilizing his entire arsenal more effectively on the Boston native.

“My striking game is sharpened. Every time I’m fighting, I can fight standing up, on the floor, wherever it goes,” he said.

“I’m a BJJ black belt, and I can never forget where I came from, so if I have the chance, depending on my game plan, I may try to take him down and work my ground and pound.”

Whenever two strikers meet each other, it is always bound to turn into an entertaining bout and there should be no exception for Wanderlei Silva or Chris Leben.

It will be the first time both fighters meet each other at UFC 132 and Silva will be making his return after a year layoff rehabbing an injury.

Silva spoke with FightersOny.co.uk and he believes his bout with Leben will remind fans just how dangerous the Brazilian can be.

“We fight toe to toe, we give show the fans like to watch,” Silva said.

“I am faster, I am faster than him. Who’s gonna hit first? My style is to go in there and [throw a lot of punches].”

Both strikers have knocked out several opponents throughout their respective careers and are known for their aggressive, brawling style. It is because of their styles that makes this fight more intriguing and it even has the former Pride FC Middleweight Champion claiming the bout to be a potential candidate for “Fight of the Year.”

After experimenting with different weight classes in previous fights, Silva made the transition to middleweight last year where he made his debut against British slugger Michael Bisping. Silva looked to be in much better condition and earned a victory over Bisping via unanimous decision.

Leben has been one of the more exciting, attracting fighters to compete in the middleweight division, as the former Ultimate Fighter season one alumni has recorded wins over Yoshihiro Akiyama, Aaron Simpson and Patrick Cote.

While both men are noted for their knockout ability, Silva has taken far more susceptible punishment to being knocked out in his career. But despite his vulnerability, Silva predicts the bout won’t make it past the first round and sees himself imposing his will early.

“I’m going to hit him a couple of times and after that he is going to go out. I’m going to beat him fast,” he said.

UFC on Versus 4:  Rick Story and Some of the Best Wrestlers in MMA

Bleacher Report’s John Heinis:

How many times have we heard the phrase “wrestling is the best base to have before entering MMA?”

While the grinding style of some wrestlers is not always entertaining (cough, Jon Fitch, cough), it is hard to argue that it is effective.

Welterweight prospect Rick Story is one of many strong wrestlers looking to stake their claim as an upper echelon talent at 170 pounds.

After his upset win over Thiago Alves at UFC 129, “The Horror” Story is well on his way to that point.

Let’s take a look at a dozen of the most successful wrestlers in MMA right now; this list is in no particular order.

UFC on Versus 4: A Look at Each Fight on the June 26 UFC Live Fight Card:

Bleacher Report’s Nick Caron:

Zuffa will continue a huge month of June with its fourth MMA event this Sunday night, UFC on Versus 4 from the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA. As always, Bleacher Report will be your home for the latest news, predictions and results of the event.

The main event will feature the welterweight debut of former middleweight contender Nate “The Great” Marquardt as he fights up-and-comer Rick Story in what will likely be a very important bout when it comes to future title aspirations for both men.

That fight will replace the original main event which was scheduled to be Marquardt against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who recently thoroughly beat Dan Hardy at UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis in late-March. Johnson was forced out of the bout, though, with a rotator cuff injury.

The event will air on Versus in the U.S. and Rogers Sportsnet in Canada, with the preliminary fights being available on Facebook. The following is the official finalized fight card.
