Firas Zahabi Explains Why Fans Shouldn’t Have High Expectations For Khabib vs. McGregor

It will be the biggest fight in UFC history but maybe not the best fight.

Firas Zahabi explains why fight fans shouldn’t believe that Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor will be the greatest fight that they have ever seen. Make no mistake about it though, it will be one of the biggest fights that the UFC has every booked on the pay-per-view.

The former UFC lightweight and featherweight champ will challenge the current UFC lightweight champ for the strap at UFC 229.

Firas Zahabi Explains

The Tristar coach recently did a podcast where he gave his thoughts on various topics including this fight that does down in over a month. The renowned coach went on record by stating that this title bout won’t be competitive at all.

“What I’m doubting, what I don’t see very likely is a seesaw battle,” Zahabi said (H/T to Bloody Elbow). “Where there’s a lot of stand up, then they hit the ground, then they get back up, and they’re striking and they’re wrestling, and it’s a back-and-forth battle where it’s coming down the last round — that, I don’t see.

“I don’t see a very competitive fight even though these two fighters are great phenomal competitors,” he said. “The only reason I don’t see it that way is not because one fighter is more skilled than the other. No, far from it. The only reason I do see it this way — a one-sided victory — it’s purely because of their styles. McGregor’s style is completely opposite to Khabib’s.”

The Follow Up

The UFC 229 pay-per-view event is slated to take place on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Zahabi would continue by stating that the times that they fought out of character gave an interesting insight into their skills. First, when the UFC lightweight champion was jabbing and out-striking Al Iaquinta at UFC 223. Second, when McGregor was trying to dirty box with Nate Diaz and Max Holloway. According to the coach, he feels that they should be sticking to their strengths in this upcoming title fight.

“If Khabib tries to pick and poke at McGregor from afar with that jab, that would really really surprise me,” he said. “If McGregor tries to dirty box with Khabib, that would really surprise me, because any tie ups with Khabib will probably result with McGregor being put on his back.

“So I think they’re gonna be really on their game plan that night. It’s going play their game for real, the way they really play it. That’s McGregor at a distance, sniping, and that’s Khabib up-close, in personal, tying up, clinching.

“It’s going to be a blowout either way. Either Khabib is going to win and it’s going to seem lopsided… Khabib is going to take him down and maul him, or McGregor is going to catch him on his way in and knock him out. It’s going to happen one way or another.”

Carlos Condit Will Travel To Tristar To Train With Former Rival

Carlos Condit will be training with some elite company soon.

The post Carlos Condit Will Travel To Tristar To Train With Former Rival appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Carlos Condit is in a bit of a slump at this point in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

The former interim UFC welterweight champion is currently on a four fight losing-streak. From once competing in the glory days of MMA and standing toe-to-toe with the likes of Georges St-Pierre, Nick Diaz, Johny Hendricks and more.

“The Natural Born Killer” is now on a downhill trend in regards to his Octagon career, as his last outing was a second round submission loss to Alex Oliveira. The skid has been so bad that Condit was at one point considering retirement from fighting.

It looks like JacksonWink MMA striking coach Brandon Gibson has an idea up his sleeve. He revealed on The MMA Hour that he’s sending Condit to Tristar Gym in Canada to train with Bellator MMA welterweight champion Rory MacDonald (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I’m actually sending Carlos Condit up to Tristar,” Gibson said. “He’s gonna get a little work in with Rory and (Tristar head coach) Firas (Zahabi) and help Rory for the Mousasi fight.

“So I’m happy that Carlos gets to go out there and get a new look and pick up some new tools and get a new atmosphere and environment.”

MacDonald has flourished since departing the UFC. He has back-to-back victories under the Bellator banner, the latter earning him the promotion’s welterweight title. He will now challenge for his second title in Bellator MMA.

“The Red King” is slated to face fellow former UFC fighter Gegard Mousasi for the middleweight title on September 29th.

Top MMA Trainer Unveils Why Conor McGregor Gasses In Big Fights

Conor McGregor has had issues with his cardio in the past. Is this why?

The post Top MMA Trainer Unveils Why Conor McGregor Gasses In Big Fights appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

It’s no secret that former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor has had issues with his cardio.

Usually, ‘The Notorious One’s’ fights wouldn’t last long enough for the Irishman to have to worry about his fatigue level, thanks to his monstrous left hand. In March of 2016, McGregor’s issues with cardio were first exposed during his fight with Nate Diaz.

Mystic Mac exhausted himself with his offensive output in the first round. He entered the second round fatigued before being subsequently submitted by Diaz via rear-naked choke.

In their rematch just five months later, McGregor again showed some cardio issues in the middle of the fight before catching a second wind and winning via majority decision. McGregor made his professional boxing debut in August of last year against Floyd Mayweather Jr., again gassing out in the later rounds of the contest before being TKO’d in the 10th round by ‘Money.’

Tristar Gym head coach Firas Zahabi recently joined UFC commentator Joe Rogan’s podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, and offered a theory as to why McGregor has been having issues with his cardio (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

“It think it’s partly genetic,” Zahabi said. “I call it the touch of death. He’s got that left hand, it’s the touch of death. That touch of death comes at a cost. How do you have the touch of death? Where does power come from? Number one on the list, number one, is where your muscle is attached to the bone. It’s genetic.

“So, Mike Tyson, he has a powerful left hook not because his coach taught him how to hit a left hook. He could have hit a left hook like that if he had a mediocre trainer. It has to do with the leverage of his bones,” he continued. “So, for instance, imagine a really heavy pole that weighs a hundred pounds, and I want to stand it up.

“Well, depending on where I grab it, I’m gonna have more resistance or less resistance. If I grab it near the end, I have more leverage. So where your muscles are attached to the bone is gonna dictate how much leverage you get out of it.”

Zahabi then explained how the type of muscle fiber McGregor has could also be a contributing factor:

“If you have a fast-twitch muscle fiber, you can hold less oxygen, but it can twitch faster. Hence the name,” Zahabi explained. “So, if you’re a slow-twitch muscle fiber guy, you can metabolize more oxygen, but you can’t twitch as fast. So, there’s a give and take. So you have a guy like Nick Diaz who needs to knock you out with volume.

“He can’t knock you out with one shot,” he added. “Look at B.J. Penn. If round one, he doesn’t knock you out, the likelihood of him knocking you out in round two is less. Diaz is the opposite. The likelihood of him knocking you out in round three is higher than round one, because of the cumulative attack. McGregor, look at his stats.

“It’s all round one knockout, round two knockout (using) his fast-twitch, high-leverage left hand. If you take him into deep waters, his fast-twitch muscle fibers cannot metabolize with Mayweather. Mayweather’s so smart, he let McGregor work for three rounds. ’I knew you’re getting excited, keep working.

“And when you have nothing left, I’m gonna put you out.’ That was such a brilliant strategy.”
