After Aug. 26’s boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, which ended in a tenth round knockout victory for “Money”, many seemed to be somewhat impressed with McGregor’s performance.

The MMA community, specifically, seemed to pleased or content with what transpired for the most part.

Former UFC lightweight champion and current Bellator standout Benson Henderson, however, doesn’t share that same sentiment.

In a recent interview, “Smooth” said that if the crossover fights like Mayweather vs. McGregor become a trend, MMA will ultimately suffer:

“People will start to view us like WWE,” Henderson told ESPN. “You start having freak shows like that — mock contests — and bill them as real? That’s not the way to go.

“Soon, you’ll see fights that are basically worked. ‘Oh, this guy will win, but it will be really close first.’ One guy is carrying the other, for the sake of millions. How close to the edge are we talking to a worked fight? How close to that line do we want to get? Let’s be honest. Let’s call it like we see it.”

Henderson didn’t necessarily imply that the fight was fixed, but he did say that fights like this get ‘too close to skirting the edge’ of a fixed fight. He also said that the ‘integrity of MMA’ is at danger of being hurt in situations like this:

“It’s a very slippery slope when you have a world champion boxer fighting an MMA guy for the sake of money, and he can’t knock him out in the first round,” Henderson said. “He has to make sure he carries him a little bit. For me, that’s too close to skirting the edge [of a fixed fight].

“I think Floyd even said that to a certain extent. He threw six punches in the first round. Would you not call that suspect? Make sure it lasts a couple rounds, then put him away whenever you want? That’s detrimental to the integrity of MMA, to people buying a fight thinking, ‘Oh no, this isn’t fake. It’s real. These guys aren’t carrying each other.’”

Henderson, who has been recovering from ACL surgery, is set to make his return to action at Bellator 183 next week in San Jose, California against Patricky “Pitbull” Freire.

Justin Gaethje Explains Why Conor McGregor ‘Can’t Fight Through’

Prior to being finished by Floyd Mayweather in the tenth round of their Aug. 26 boxing match, Conor McGregor had seemed to tire, and in the aftermath of the fight, he admitted that this theory was true, while also admitting that he has had to deal with ‘patches of fatigue’ in some of his previous fights.

Why this is the case is unclear, but UFC lightweight contender Justin Gaethje feels as if the “Notorious” one’s cardio issues may be due to his lack of experience in grappling and wrestling:

“The reason he can’t fight through when he gets super tired is he’s never grappled,” Gaethje said during the promotion lunch for TUF 26 (via MMA Fighting). “You have to learn how to fight through when it sucks and it’s really hard. You have to be in that position over and over and over, to be able to perform in that mindset. The fact that he’s never wrestled or grappled, it doesn’t help when he gets super tired and starts questioning himself.”

As a former NCAA Division I wrestler, perhaps Gaethje has a point, as McGregor’s background is more in the striking department.

Either way, the Irishman performed better against Mayweather than most had expected him to, and Gaethje doesn’t feel as if MMA has suffered as a whole due to McGregor coming up short in his bid against “Money”:

“If he goes in there and gets knocked out, yeah MMA takes a hit. But it’s not gonna hurt us,” Gaethje said. “Because at the end of the day, all we have to say is, ‘Let’s have a real fight.’ In a real fight, in the street, when it comes to life and death, an MMA fighter will win 90 percent of the time against just a boxer. I’m content and comfortable with that.”

McGregor, who hasn’t competed in the Octagon since scoring a second round TKO victory over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 last November, is expected to return to MMA later this year or early next year.

Gaethje, on the other hand, is set to face off against Alvarez after the current season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) concludes.

Ahead of his final fight against Conor McGregor tomorrow night (Aug. 26, 2017), Floyd Mayweather apparently doesn’t have his corner set.

In fact, it’s still unclear whether or not his father, Floyd Sr., will be in his corner:

“Right now, it’s nothing major,” Mayweather Sr. told MMAFighting.com when asked if there was any kind of falling out. “We will see. Because I feel like I should be in the corner, as well. What went on is I happened to be away from the gym when everything started. Nobody let me know anything.”

“I should be the first [cornerman],” Floyd Sr. said. “But I don’t know. I’m just gonna see. I’m just gonna be honest with you, man. I don’t know what’s going on. First, when I was gone, I had went back to Michigan, I think it was, to check on my mother and stuff. And then just to me that, I came back, all them guys been with him. We’re gonna see. I’m just gonna see.”

While he feels as if his son would likely be better off with his father in his corner, Floyd Sr. doesn’t seem to be too concerned with “Money’s” chances against McGregor, the UFC lightweight champion who’s making his professional boxing debut:

“Am I concerned?” Floyd Sr. said. “I’m always concerned about my kids. But I’m not really worried about him taking care of himself. I think he can take care of himself.

“I’m just gonna say it like this right here: I think that he would be much better with his daddy. Because I always made sure he got where he needs to get. There never was no friction with me and him. I think he’s gonna be OK, though.”

If he’s concerned about one thing, however, it would be McGregor using techniques not allowed in a boxing ring:

“Sometimes people that are complainers, sometimes people do things that they know they shouldn’t do,” Floyd Sr. said. “And sometimes things happen with that. Things happen with that. … We’re talking about my son and Conor, I’m talking about him swiping his feet, throwing his elbows. I’m just telling you that there are a lot of things that can happen.”

What do you make of Floyd Sr.’s comments?

McGregor brought Malignaggi into his camp as a sparring partner, but Malignaggi left after photos were leaked indicating that McGregor was getting the better of him.

Matters only got worse when UFC President Dana White released video of the two sparring, including a clip of what Team McGregor has labeled a knockdown.

Now, just a day away from the fight between Mayweather and McGregor, another short clip of the “Notorious” one and Malignaggi has been released via Fancy Combat:

In the day’s leading up to their highly anticipated boxing match, which will take place on Saturday (Aug. 26, 2017) night live from Las Vegas, Nevada, Floyd Mayweather has said that Conor McGregor is having problems getting his weight down.

Mayweather, speaking to MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, said that he was told by a source that McGregor has been using IV bags in order to make the 154-pound limit:

“He better be trying to get his weight down, my weight is down,” Mayweather said. “I know he’s over right now, what he weighs. What I was told, I do my homework, I’ve been hearing a lot about him getting IV bags. I don’t know if it’s true … rumors. He got seven IV bags. You know with the Nevada commission, that’s illegal.”

Despite Mayweather’s claims, it’d be hard to imagine McGregor struggling to make weight. The Irishman is the former UFC featherweight champion and cut down to 145 pounds multiple times during his title run. He’s also the reigning lightweight champion, and has fought at 155 pounds consistently throughout his career.

Only time will tell, however, as the official weigh-ins are set to take place tomorrow in Las Vegas.
