Originally, Floyd Mayweather opened up as a major betting favorite to beat UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in their upcoming Aug. 26 boxing match in Las Vegas, Nevada, and for good reason, as McGregor has never competed in a professional boxing match.

Mayweather, on the other hand, is a former five-division world champion, and the former pound-for-pound king. His professional record stands at a perfect 49-0, and he’s outclassed some of the very best boxers of this generation. Many are expecting “Money” to run through the “Notorious” one on fight night, but the betting lines have changed dramatically since the fight was first announced.

Mayweather is far less superior a favorite over McGregor then he once was, and that’s due mainly in part to the amount of money being put on the brash and outspoken Irishman. In fact, ESPN’s Darren Rovell recently reported that a $150,000 bet was placed on McGregor:

Also, according to ESPN.com, the majority of bets appear to have initially been placed on McGregor:

“At Caesars Palace sportsbooks, 140 of the first 144 bets were on McGregor, who was paying back around 5-1. Almost all of the early action was small and placed by recreational bettors. One sportsbook manager described it as ‘square-a-palooza.’”

Are you surprised by this trend, and who do you expect to come out on top on fight night?

In the lead-up to boxing legend Floyd Mayweather’s monumental clash with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in Las Vegas on August 26th, much has been made of ‘Money’s’ punching power, or lack thereof.

Leading the charge has been McGregor himself, who mocked the boxer’s claim during their recent press tour that he would KO him by pointing out, “You haven’t knocked anyone out in about 20 years!”

Of course that was an exaggeration on McGregor’s part, but the reality is it has been six years since Mayweather last experienced a victory inside the distance, with his knockout ratio having noticeably diminished over the years as he’s moved up in weight.

Nevertheless, Mayweather does still have 26 knockout victories to his name, and so it would be a mistake on McGregor’s part to discount the chance that the five-division champion could catch him with a fight-ending punch or combination over the course of 12 rounds of boxing.

With that in mind, in this article we’ll take a look back at the 10 best knockout finishes of Mayweather’s long career, working in chronological order and beginning with his first ever fight as a professional boxer over 20 years ago.

Floyd Mayweather vs. Roberto Apodaca

Back in 1996 at the age of 19, Floyd Mayweather made his professional boxing debut as a super-featherweight (130lbs) against 25-year-old Mexican, Roberto Apodaca, another newcomer who would quickly discover that he was completely out of his depth against the future hall of famer.

The teenage Mayweather’s all-round boxing game was on-point even back then, but it was his savvy bodywork in particular that stood out the most, and he sat Apodaca down with a left hook to the liver in the opening three-minutes of the fight..

Apodaca recovered as best he could, but early in the second round, Mayweather would go back to precisely the same spot, setting it up with a left hook to the head and then digging to the liver for the TKO finish, leaving his opponent writhing in pain on the canvas.

It’s no secret that Conor McGregor is being doubted ahead of his Aug. 26 boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. After all, the Irishman has never competed in a professional boxing match, while Mayweather, an undefeated former five-division world champion, is considered to be one of the best boxers of all-time.

In the end, however, the two stars will face-off inside the squared circle, and while many are labeling it as nothing more than a ‘money grab’, McGregor truly believes he’ll come out on top, even going as far as to predict a finish.

Now just weeks away from the fight, BT Sport has released a documentary titled ‘Conor McGregor: Doubt Me Now’, which follows the journey McGregor took to superstardom.

Conor McGregor is now just weeks away from making his professional boxing debut, and he’ll do so against one of the best boxers of this generation in Floyd Mayweather on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Many have given McGregor a slim chance of winning the bout, but former boxing world champion Paulie Malignaggi, who McGregor recently brought in to be a sparring partner, said there’s a method to the Irishman’s madness:

“He’s got a game plan behind it,” Malignaggi told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto. “It’s not what people think. There’s a game plan behind what he’s doing. There’s a method to Conor’s madness.”

Malignaggi also said that a recent sparring session between him and McGregor was ‘educational’, and that the “Notorious” one is ‘coming along’:

“It was educational,” said Malignaggi, who added that he had no expectations coming in. “There was a lot of trash talking, which me and him both known to have a little bit. Like I said, we did eight good rounds of work. It was physical work and Conor is coming along.”

“In a championship camp, the sparring is intense, so I didn’t expect to go in there and it be a picnic,” Malignaggi said. “He’s a competitor, I’m a competitor. We went in there and there was a lot of trash talking right away. There was a lot of fighting right away. In the end, you look back on it was kind of fun. I don’t have everybody that can match my trash talking, but Conor definitely can. So it was making it a lot of fun.”

While many are indeed doubting McGregor, some have given him a chance based solely on his power, and specifically the power in his left hand. Malignaggi noted McGregor’s ‘big left hand’, but he also said that the Irishman is working on adding a few new tricks into his arsenal:

“You come into the situation already knowing Conor has a big left hand,” Malignaggi said of Mayweather’s likely mindset. “So if you’re fighting Conor, you’re probably gonna prepare for that left hand. So obviously Conor is working on other things besides the left hand, so that there could be a surprise element to it, too.”

How do you expect McGregor to perform on Aug. 26?

Former UFC Champ: McGregor Has A ‘Real Chance’ Of Knocking Out Mayweather

Eddie Alvarez is well aware of not only the striking skills possessed by Conor McGregor, but more specifically, the type of power the Irishman has in his hands. Late last year, Alvarez was picked apart before being brutally knocked out by McGregor at UFC 205, surrendering his lightweight title in the process.

McGregor has not competed since that fight, but he’ll take on legendary former five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many have given McGregor a slim chance of beating the 49-0 “Money”, but Alvarez believes there’s a ‘real chance’ McGregor can knock Mayweather out:

“Within [the first] four rounds, if you don’t think Conor can knock this guy out, you’re an idiot or you just don’t know fighting,” Alvarez told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto on the Five Rounds podcast. “It can very well happen. If he doesn’t get it done by then, then it could look very one-sided. The technical boxing of Mayweather is enough to make it look really one-sided.

“But Conor, there is a very real chance that he can put him away.”

As far as his own career goes, Alvarez is set to coach the next season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) opposite former WSOF (World Series of Fighting) champion Justin Gaethje, who recently stopped Michael Johnson in his UFC debut earlier this month.

Alvarez and Gaethje are expected to clash later this year, and the ex-UFC champ feels as if it’ll be a battle of ‘America’s Most Violent’:

“Everybody could see hints of me in that [Gaethje, Johnson] fight, the way Justin kind of puts it out there,” Alvarez said. “If you get the right guy in front of you, you can make some magic — and he’s one of those guys.

“These are the kind of fights I win every time. So it should be fun to see who is ‘America’s Most Violent.’ It’s a battle of that right there.”

What do you make of Alvarez’s comments regarding Mayweather-McGregor, and how do you expect his fight with Gaethje to play out?

We are now just weeks away from the Aug. 26 showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor.

Training camp is likely heating up for both men, and McGregor, specifically, has documented his on social media. From his perspective, it seems to be going well, although former WBO welterweight champion Jessie Vargas recently made headlines when he said that McGregor was knocked out during sparring in preparation for the bout.

There has been no footage presented to support Vargas’ claims, however, and until there is, Mayweather isn’t believing the rumors:

“My thing is basically like this, if I ain’t seen no footage, I don’t believe it,” Mayweather told Fight Hype. “And me and Jessie Vargas are in communication. We’ve been communicating, but everything is just rumors until I see it. I have to visually see it with my own eyes.”

McGregor, the UFC’s lightweight champion, has never been knocked out during his MMA career, although he’s never competed in a professional boxing match. He’s coming off of a brutal knockout victory over Eddie Alvarez in which he won the promotion’s lightweight title at UFC 205 last November.

Mayweather, on the other hand, hasn’t competed since a September 2015 decision victory over Andre Berto. The 40-year-old former five division champion came out of retirement this year in order to fight McGregor.

Do you believe the rumors?
